Sandy, one word and so simple, but when you put it together with the word hurricane to get Hurricane Sandy, it is truly anything but simple. I am sitting here right now in my home in New York on Long Island, just plain scared. I have to be honest we are ready if the worst does happen, but I truly can’t help being just a bit unnerved right now.
The wind has begun to pick up and howl now. The rain has coming down in buckets since late last night. And this supposedly isn’t even the worst of what is said by the those in the know (the weathermen and local politicians).
Honestly, I am a writer and started writing on Hubpages back at the end of May of this year and then my very own blog, which I started back at the end of August. Since starting this journey, I haven’t missed a day to post a new blog article and also am online daily to try to keep in constant communication with others who write, as well.
Now, this is all being threatened by what they are calling ‘Frankenstorm’ and have to be honest that I am trying to remain calm, but seriously having quite a bit of trouble. I love this time of year and the scarier the better for Halloween usually, but this is not the kind of fright or scare that I ever had in mind. Also, the lose of power will be nothing more than a nuisance to someone like myself who depends on the Internet and power to conduct my daily business practices.
Is it too much to ask for a normal Halloween, which includes costumes, trick or treating, tons of candy and scary movies, too? If we lose power and the rain continues for days as they are indeed calling for, one of my all time favorite holidays will all, but cancelled, too.
My kids coming in at 3 years old and almost 2 years old have been truly excited for weeks now and all I keep thinking is that this excitement only lasts for so many years and will be replaced in only a few short years with indifference and most likely thinking of this as a baby, childish holiday. They will at that point probably think they are too old and/or cool to dress up and be seen with us to go trick-or-treating around the local neighborhood.
So, I now feel a bit sad on top of my fear and almost gypped if we do lose this year, because of this. As it is, tomorrow would have been Emma’s first dress-up party at pre-school, where she would have paraded with all of her little classmates around the school grounds and finish up celebrating with a small party with her class and the families, too. Now, most likely school will be closed and this too will be cancelled.Bah Humbug…Please Don’t Cancel Halloween, Too…
Here is the irony of the whole situation. Sunday, we went to the PetSmart to buy more supplies for our fish (if you want to read more about them, click here). The girls were with us and wanted to get another fish to join the three we already had. We asked the people that work in the Fish department, if it would be safe to add one more for the size tank we had. They said it should be fine, but just be careful with the filter and cleaning the tank, because if we lost power this could put the new fish into some sort of shock.
All seemed fine and brought the new fish home, which I jokingly named “Sandy” to the tank yesterday. This morning two of the other fish were found belly up and dead. ‘Sandy’ not only survived, but seems to be thriving right now. So not only is the hurricane named Sandy a survivor and so very strong, but so too now is the fish also known by the very same name.
Believe me the irony did not go unnoticed on me this morning and now I am just that much more frightened and hope to god it is a coincidence, but just in case you don’t see me online for a few days I may be one of the casualties of Hurricane Sandy and may very well be without power.
Please do keep coming to my blog daily though, because I have scheduled posts throughout the weekend at 9 am EST every morning and you will see be able to find new posts from me if this unfortunate event does take my power out. Thanks for the understanding and hope everyone else also in the hurricane’s path is doing Ok right now, too.
