Many know I love to read books. I have made no secret of that here. Of course, I have new must read fall 2017 books for all.
But time to make a new confession today. What’s my latest confession? I lost my reading mojo for almost a whole month. But why?
First I couldn’t decide what to read next on long books list. Plus, I decided to revamp my blog with new theme and layout. I also have been working on SEO and creating newer Pinterest images for many of my older posts. On top of this, I have gotten into Tailwind to get my content on newer eyes. Plus still designing for clients. It took a toll, especially my desire to read books.
See, I was zonked by day’s end. So, I didn’t care to focus my eyes on reading books. Therefore Netflix binging occurred. Which is probably another blog post in its own right. Still, today’s post is a reading books’ roundup for Must Read Fall 2017 Books.
But how do I have books to still discuss? Well, I read many since my last book’s roundup back in July. This was before my reading mojo was effected. I also never shared all those reads.

So, I am briefly discussing those novels below now.
12 Must Read Fall 2017 Books…
1. Looking for Group, by Rory Harrison
Dylan is in remission from cancer, but may have a slight addiction to the drugs prescribed to him while he was indeed so very sick and literally on the brink of death. While Arden is dealing with her own issues including being a rich kid who just happens to be transgendered. She is dealing with an absentee mom, as well as a father, who can’t come to grips with her gender identity.
The two kids finally meet in real life. It is at this point that that they decide to run away together.
While the concept was definitely intriguing, the writing just sometimes seemed rather forced to me. I also felt unsure about this ending. On one hand I like that it was left open-ended, but the other I was conflicted that the two kids seemed to find one another only to let go altogether.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
2. Into the Water, by Paula Hawkins
The storyline revolved around a small town where one of the locals (Danielle aka Nel Abbott) had recently drown. Nel, left behind a teenage daughter, Lena. Her sister (Jules), returns to help care for her daughter, after vowing to never return in her younger days. This was because Jules had something terrible happen to her years back.
The story takes off with the mystery as to what actually happened to Nel. The talk of the town is this same river where Nel drown actually happened to be the spot where other women in the past also drown. So, we are left to wonder if there is curse of sorts, if Nel jumped to her own death or if there is foul play.
I wasn’t a fan of was how many characters were involved as it was confusing. Also, I never truly felt a real affinity to any of the main characters. Plus less than 3/4 of the way I guessed how Nel actually met her demise. Yet I did enjoy the book for the witchcraft aspect, as well as the the finality of the plot line.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
3. The Identicals, by Elin Hilderbrand
The story of twins, Harper and Tamara Frost was timeless and classic. These two twin sisters, who grew up adoring each other with picture perfect parents are no longer even friends now. But what went wrong? Seems something happened around the time Tamara’s younger newborn son died that the women can’t get past.
But now after the death of their beloved father, Billy Frost, the two are forced to come together and try to put those differences aside. But this is no easy feat. They switch places as one lived on Nantucket and the other on Martha’s Vineyard. By doing so the ladies take a good peek into the other twin’s life.
I think my favorite part and reference was to the classic (original) Disney Parent Trap movie with Hailey Mills. Why? Because growing up this was one of my favorite movies. So, adding this movie in to reference the twins’ relationship was perfect to me. I would highly recommend this one for Elin Hilderbrand lovers and those looking for light, easy read.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
4. Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver
The concept behind this novel is not just to re-live Sam’s last day, but also to see how the day would have been different had she chosen different ways to interact with her friend, peers and family on that supposed last day. Each of the seven chapters, thus finds the clock resetting and Sam reliving her last day ll over again.
Not only did this book, accurately portray teens, but also the struggle between how to act in order to be considered cool amongst their peers, but also in living their lives choosing right from wrong even if this means that you might not indeed be considered cool or popular in doing so.
The writing and dialogue, also was quite realistic, but also left me thinking many times over even after the book’s final end came.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
5. The Sisters Chase, by Sarah Healy
This is the story about two young sisters (Mary and Hannah Chase) who are left motherless where their mother, Diane dies unexpectedly was slow going in all honesty.
Don’t get me wrong, as the plot line of the two sisters having to find there way on together was interesting enough, but definitely left me hoping the story itself would pick up as I read on.
That said, I quickly guessed the plot twist (won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read). So while yes the novel did pick up steam, because of this guessed plot line by me, I still wasn’t riveted. Maybe because I could indeed see where the story was going.

6. Goodbye, Vitamin, by Rachel Khong
Ruth Young is a 30 year old woman, who recently was dumped by her fiancé. She also returns home for Christmas time at the urging of her mother, Annie. Why? Because Ruth’s father, Howard Young, who was a former history professor is now suffering the beginnings of Alzheimer’s Disease.
The real story is how Ruth processes and deals with her dad’s memory loss from this disorder. She tries to have his memory loss not accelerate by controlling his diet, as well as working with one of his former colleagues with having her dad think he didn’t loss his job. But along the way, Ruth learns more than she would have liked to about her dad before he began to exhibit the effect of Alzheimer’s.
One of the big things, I loved though about this short novel was the use of her dad’s memories from a notebook he had written in when Ruth and her brother were younger. This notebook was given to Ruth and she read excerpts of it as she writes the current happenings in her own diary.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
7. Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson
I was riveted from the opening lines of “I was born on a Tuesday at University Hospital Columbus Ohio USA – a country caught between black and white.” So with Jacqueline’s poetic words, I felt myself relaxing and even being pulled into her beautiful book based on her childhood and life. On top of this, I absolutely loved the message of hope that the author gives to all in her moving memoir. Seeing how she blossomed into the amazing woman she is today and just why by reading her poems here was a treasure to me.
Like Ms. Woodson, I struggled early on with reading, but always loved to write. Thankfully I overcame my youthful reading struggles as to date and write constantly, too.
By the way, I am truly blown away by the fact that I had never even heard of this writer before having stumbled upon this book of her poems in my Quarterly box. I will seek out other books by her now as I cannot say enough just how much I thoroughly enjoyed this one by her.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
8. Moxie, by Jennifer Mathieu
Thanks to NetGalley and Roaring Brook Press for ARC.
See, Moxie is about Viv, who is the daughter of a former 1990s tough as nails punk girl. Somehow though after Viv’s father passes away, her mom moves back home to have the help of her conservative parents to raise Viv. In the process, it would seem that her mom lost some of her edge and her fierceness.
So Viv’s grown up flying under the radar and is by all intents and purposes a good girl. She is quiet and even dutiful (as her grandmother puts it). But something snaps in Viv when she has to keep dealing with the status quo of how in her small Texas town the girls are treated as inferior to the boys and the high school football team.
So, Viv ends up fighting back and creates a magazine type revolution (Moxie) to put a stop to what she and her fellow female classmates have endured over the years. What ensues is truly inspiring and really to me is the perfect read for all young teens girls and women, too.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
9. Library of Fates, by Aditi Khorana
The Parable of the Land of Trees was the set up for an enriching reading experience. However, Princess Amrita’s story where her whole world is uprooted was a bit slow to go. Still the author’s note and her parable had me intrigued.
The big surprise was a wow to the second half of the book and the author’s plot twist, as well as her summation, too. I literally couldn’t put this part down and read it in only a few hours.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
10. Little & Lion, by Brandy Colbert
See the story centers around stepsister, Little and stepbrother Lion. The two have always been as close as two siblings can be. But in recent times with Lion’s diagnosis the two haven’t sadly been as close. So Lion has been suffering from bi-polar disorder, but is on medication to control this.
Little has just returned from boarding school in New England, where she left after having a bad breakup with her girlfriend to enjoy her summer at home in LA. She is hopeful to see her brother and reconnect with her friends from back home. However, things aren’t as simple as she would hope for during summer vacation for Little, Lion, their family or their friends.
I loved the relationship and connection between the siblings, as well as what they did learn during the course of the book about their own lives. Plus, the telling of Lion’s mental illness was definitely done realistically.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
11. Tell Me Three Things, by Julie Buxbaum
During her first week in a new school, Jessie gets emailed by a fellow male classmate. He offers to help her find her way in this new school. The only catch is she has no idea who this person is as he won’t reveal his identity. He literally goes by the name “Somebody/Nobody” or “SN” for short. The whole story revolves around Jessie finding her way thanks to SN’s help.
So much to love about this book. First, Jessie’s stepbrother, Theo. I couldn’t help laughing and throughly enjoying him as his sense of humor and sarcastic nature was truly a welcome addition. Jessie’s friendship with her childhood friend, Scarlett, as well as her new friendships with Dri and Agnes were an added layer for this extraordinary character. I also couldn’t help loving that Jessie decided to work at a local book store as this book lover wholeheartedly approved.
As for who, SN could have been or was, I truly felt like I was keeping score throughout the whole book. Just when I thought I knew, the author threw a bit of a curveball. But rebounded nicely if must say still. Plus, the ending was hands down the best. I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it, but trust me well worth reading this one cover to cover to get to that ending.
My Must Read Fall 2017 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
12. Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon
Having had read The Sun Is Also a Star, by this same author, I had had this book by her on my list for quite some time. Finally, I got a copy from my local library. And yet I didn’t know too much about the actual story, just that I had enjoyed the previously mentioned book by Yoon.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the story of young love between Olly and Maddy was sweet and hit all the right notes. Bonus, it was an easy and quick enough read that left me with all the feels. Yet, the plot twist and ending were a wonderful pay off.

Seana Turner says
Sounds like you have been very busy, Janine. Reading for pleasure shouldn’t be stressful… sometimes I read a lot, and other times I just crash. It isn’t an assignment, but a joy, right? Will be checking these suggestions out:)
Janine says
I agree completely Seana and those nights I am not going to lie it felt like a chore and I was so guilty not reading though, too. So, I tabled reading and walked away. Right now, I am feeling better though where reading is concerned. But if I feel that way again, I am doing similar and walking away until I don’t feel like that again.
William Holland says
I’m going through a weird period of my life when I’m not reading books at all..first time in 15 years….no reason for it that I can fathom, and I’m sure I’ll return to the books soon. Anyway, thanks for the list. I’ll just go back to writing them until I get the urge to read more.
Happy Friday, Janine!

I swear I have stopped reading since I started blogging. I LOVE to read. But not sure where to fit it in anymore. This is a great list and your descriptions and ratings are super helpful.

Thanks Bri and I know many hours of blogging recently left me feeling similar with reading, too sadly.
Bev says
Wow, I actually haven’t heard of any of these books! Glad you found your reading mojo and thanks for sharing these recommendations.

Very happy to share with you, too Bev and thanks as I really was getting worried about the lack of desire to read here in all honesty.

LINDA ATWELL says
Oh, dear! My fall reading list just increased by leaps and bounds! Is that even possible? Well, my list has certainly grown after reading yours. I’d love to know how you come up with your books. Do you hear about them from another reader, attend book events, or in some other fashion? I love to read too and when I’m on vacation, I get in a ton of books. And guess what? I go to Mexico for 17 days in November. So now I have more reading to look forward to. Thanks!
Janine says
So glad to help with your reading list. We are going back to Disney for a few days in November for my younger daughter’s birthday that just so happens to be on Thanksgiving Day this year. So, I will hopefully be reading on the plane ride to and from, as well as in the evenings in the room. As for where I find my books, belong to a few groups. One is Goodreads, also NetGalley (which you can read books before they are released for free) and Book of The Month?Quarterly, which are both book subscription services. So, all of these including my local library for free copies helps quench my reading habits. Hope you can check a few of these out, too and happy reading now 🙂
Rea says
Some seasons of life are truly busy enough and sometimes we can’t squeeze in the things we love doing. I myself have only finished a book again in one sitting just last night. I’ve been busy with work, travel, and blog too. So having completed a book is such a feat. I missed the feeling. I hope you get your reading mojo back this season my friend! 🙂
Janine says
Aw, thank you so much, Rea and I know exactly what you mean though as just finishing one book with life being so hectic lately has been a definite challenge.
Dana says
I have only read one of these books! There is just not enough time to read everything I want to read, but I’ll try to add a few of these to my list too.
Janine says
I hear you totally and lately there really hasn’t been much time for reading all I do want to read, too!
catherine gacad says
you are amazing with all your reading. parent trap is one of my favorite movies…the classic one. not the one with lindsay lohan! ha! i’ll put the identicals on my ever-growing list.
Janine says
Yes the original Parent Trap here with Hailey Mills not the Lindsay Lohan one! And yay hope you enjoy The Identicals as it was truly a fun read 🙂
