Cooking dinner was at one point a delightful and enjoyable experience, but Kevin decided to clean and re-organize my kitchen cabinets this past weekend. If you missed this conversation yesterday, you can catch up here.
Now it is Monday night and I am trying to make him grilled chicken, mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables for dinner. The kids and I ate earlier with them having soup and chicken nuggets, which is not my finest meal, but it was easy and quick after a long Monday of writing, transporting Emma back and forth to pre-school and dealing with two kids that fought over everything under the sun for the majority of my day.
Back to preparing Kevin’s dinner. He called me like always on his way home and let me know he was indeed coming home. When we hung up, I began to get out all the ingredients to prepare. First up, I looked for the mashed potatoes (yes I use boxed mashed potatoes tonight) and they were not where I normally store them. Then, I went to look for the garlic salt and lemon pepper seasonings. Guess what? They, too, were among the missing. Then, I went searching for the olive oil that I use to grease the skillet to grill the chicken. Also, missing!!
This Is How I Felt…So, I call Kevin. The phone rings four times before he picks up. When he picks up, I proceed to ask, “Where is the olive oil?”
Kevin answers, “In the pantry on the top shelf behind the red wine vinegar and I also put some in the glass oil spreader on the counter.
“Ok smarty pants, where is the mashed potatoes?”, I now ask.
“They are in the kitchen cabinet on the second shelf behind the rice next to the stove,” he retorts.
“Now my blood is boiling and I can tell he is smirking. One last thing, where is the garlic salt and lemon pepper?”, I continue to ask.
“In the pantry on the second shelf behind the parsley and oregano,” he laughs as stating this.
“Kevin did you do this just to drive me a bit bat sh*t crazy?”, I cannot refrain from asking.
“It needed to be cleaned, but now that you mention this has been a bit fun to hearing you try to find where I put everything,” he is now laughing so loud the next car on the parkway could probably hear him.
By the time I hang up the phone, I am deciding whether I want to just let him suffer cooking his own meal after a long day or if I want to cook said meal and spit in it!!
Seriously, never tick off the cook or person serving your food by moving her cooking supplies around!! If you don’t believe me watch this old clip of Laverne and Shirley, where poor Shirley in serving food in a diner and is driven absolutely crazy by Laverne and the customers too:

Lol, Richard!! One may truly never know the answer, but seriously as much as he can get under my skin I do love him to much to do him any real harm. Although ask me that again, when he does do something else to tick me off and my answer may change π π
Stacy Harris says
This is too funny… and while I jokingly would love for someone to come through and organize my cabinets, I am pretty sure it would drive me crazy as well. I know where everything is in my cabinets and if someone would move them… I am pretty sure I would boycott cooking.
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Stacy and that was exactly how I felt in that moment, when I just couldn't find anything. It was absolutely and awful feeling and actually felt like I was cooking in someone else's kitchen, lol π
JanineHuldie says
Krissy, so happy to know I am not alone on this, but sorry you too have experienced this. Thank you so much for sharing here, glad you could relate and enjoyed, too π
Bill says
Okay, Janine, I'm with you 100% on this one. When I lived by myself, everything had a place and I knew exactly where everything was….and when I used it, it went right back to the same spot. I would have gone nuts if someone had come in and moved everything….seriously nuts!
Kevin will learn the hard way; even though his heart was in the right place, he's going to learn the hard way one of these days. LOL

Thank you so much Bill and so true about Kevin's heart being the right place, but just couldn't help losing it just a bit on this one. Glad to know that I am not alone in needing to know where my stuff in my kitchen is and not having it switched up. Truly appreciate knowing I am not the only one who feels this way on this π π
Kevin says
Our cabinets were in a state of 'organized chaos'. Now they are in a state 'organized peace and servility', heck it is very fung Shei. And Janine, your welcome.
JanineHuldie says
Lol, Kevin…did you mean tranquility not servility?? Seriously, thank you for the wonderful laugh while I am watching our kids un around in a circle trying to chase and catch each other!!
Ruchira says
haha..I can so relate to this Janine. IF and ever my hubby cleans…he either throws things out or I have to keep calling him to check on the new status of the objects.
Men are one of the wonderful creatures existing and women can't do anything about it π
JanineHuldie says
Ruchira, happy, but sorry too that you can relate. I am not sure why men like your husband and mine do stuff like this, but do it they do and could drive a sane person just crazy!! Thanks π
Courtney~Club-Conten says
Ahh, Laverne and Shirley take me back…love them! Too funny. Thanks for linking up on Little Comedy Club too!
JanineHuldie says
Courtney, I am happy to share a bit of old school comedy with Laverne and Shirley, who absolutely still to this day can't get enough of!! Thanks and glad you enjoyed π π
Emily says
That would drive me crazy too Janine, especially since I hate to cook! Sounds like you handled it well though.
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Emily. And it did drive me just ever so slightly crazy and appreciate too sharing to let me know I am not alone π
Cari Lorine says
Hahaha! I remember my husband reorganizing our kitchen, too. It drove me insane! He said he did it because it made more sense his way; I think he did it to drive me crazy. Really cute post, Janine!
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Cari and see I am telling you our husbands are so very similar and sounds like your husband has a bit of a devil in him as well when it comes to making you go a bit crazy too!!
JanineHuldie says
Clark, you do get "A" for effort from me as does Kevin, but I think when you are the one primarily using the kitchen that if stuff changes even ever so slightly it may be hard to adjust. Thanks for commenting and sharing, too π
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Kelly and couldn't have said it better. While I was trying to find stuff I could have had dinner started or even half way done. I mean I am constantly trying to get 3 things done at one and seriously ruined my groove!!!
Amy says
That so funny…and mysterious to me because Dave never has a clue where anything is at all. π
JanineHuldie says
Amy, I wish Kevin didn't know where anything was or care for that matter!! But seriously thanks for reading and commenting too π
JanineHuldie says
Lol, Julie and thanks for the vote of confidence as I do very much appreciate it π π
Cyndi says
LOL…my hubby and I have this discussion because it's annoying when you're in the middle of the meal, you reach for the utensil in the expected drawer, it's not there and now your meal is about to burn because you can't stir it with the utensil you need. Oh, that drive me crazy. :0) I feel your pain.
JanineHuldie says
Cyndi, that would drive me crazy too and he recently had moved stuff around on the counter, when we got a Keurig and my utensils to stir were moved to the opposite counter. I kept going to where they normally were and coming up empty; so frustrating. Than you for sharing and letting me know I am not the only one that this irks π π
Melanie Chisnall says
It's one of the most frustrating things when someone moves things in your kitchen. Especially when you're used to having it a certain way and want to prepare a meal quickly, and have things to do. LOL! I could so relate, although Geoff puts things that should go in the fridge back in the cupboard like the chutney or tomato sauce. Nothing like Kevin…hehehe. Guess he felt like jazzing up your day with some mild entertainment?! π
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Melanie and it would appear so and even today I was looking for my cooking spray and couldn't find it. So it would appear this is the gift that keeps on giving!!
JanineHuldie says
Amy, it is funny I live about 45 minutes out of NYC on Long Island, but what a difference with the kitchens out here. My aunt lived in NYC for many years before moving to New Hyde Park and remember going to her place and same thing as you just said about cooking. Thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed my post and the video, too π
