“I want it!” No, this wasn’t either of my kids saying this, rather my 35 year old husband fighting over wanting a 60″ LED TV. I know right away your mind probably thought, which one of her little girls was having a temper tantrum now, but ironically it wasn’t them, but my ‘first born’ (how my mother-in-law referred to Kevin the night I married him along with ‘Congratulations it’s a boy!) aka Kevin.
By the way, this is how the conversation went or at least as I can recall.
“Best Buy has the 60″ Samsung TV I have been looking at on sale for $1300 or almost $1000 off the original price,” Kevin started off the conversation.TheTV in Question…
“So, it is not even Black Friday, yet. Why not wait to see if it goes on sale for even less money,” I tried pleading my 6th sense of frugality to him and hoping that this would dissuade him a bit longer at the very least.
“We’ll, your brother has the pre-advance to the Black Friday Best Buy ad as a preferred customer and it isn’t in that ad. So, there is a good chance that it will not be on sale for that price and will be more money if we still want it then,”Kevin said sounding like what you could imagine a spoiled 35 year old child.
“Well, do what you want. Not sure why you asked my opinion, when you were going to do what you wanted anyway in the first place,” I said a bit sarcastically at this point.
“Because I just didn’t want to buy it without running it past you and besides you just got your bedroom furniture for your Christmas gift, so this would be mine. By the way, it isn’t available in our local store, but could be shipped to the one a few towns away. Could you possibly go with your brother and pick it up next Tuesday when it available?”, Kevin asked trying be as charming as he could muster up, but still throwing bedroom furniture that I wanted almost seven long years for!
“Sure, Kevin in between my having to cart Emma back and forth to pre-school, writing for a living and taking care of two screaming kids all day. I will put that on the top of my list,” I now said even more sarcastically and frustrated.
“Ok, I can go pick it up after I get out of work and drop off at my mom’s until I have time to hook up,” he said in all seriousness and figuring he could still get his way of he cut his losses with the earlier question.
“Way to take one for the team, Kevin,” I said as I was walking out of the room trying escape the craziness.
In the end, he did just that and ordered that huge monstrosity of a TV. Why I still don’t know, because we have a 42″ TV (bought Black Friday a few years before we had Emma, that he just had to have) in our living room and 32″ TV (which I got on huge discount, because it was open box) in our bedroom. But now I am reminded of “Tim the Toolman Taylor” from the hit show Home Improvement, with his signature grunt and thinking bigger and better for just about anything.
His reasoning is we will move the 42″ into our bedroom and 32″ into the kids’ room, so we don’t have to watch in his words, “The same Barbie movie 100 times”. However truth be told, I don’t mind their TV shows, because quite frankly they are for the most part occupied and quiet. So, his argument wasn’t working for me. But then he pulled out the big guns and gave me the argument that we will have pretty much everything we need and want when do buy a house to move in easily without any big purchases (sure if I believe this there is a bridge in Brooklyn that I could buy, too).
Guess what? Still not buying it, but the boy sure thought about this enough to try to come up with some really good, solid excuses. Got to give him props for that much I suppose!! However, he bought the damn TV and now I am going to have to try to enjoy it. So, I figure the first thing we could watch on it, is some cheesy chick flick that will make him want to gag Hey, it is only just desserts.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist and now enjoy a funny on me with none other than Tim the Toolman Taylor:
