“Daddy, when we get a dog, I want to name her Lucy?”, my older daughter told my husband quite innocently.
“No!! We are going to get a big dog, who is a male. No more women in this house. I am outnumbered as it is!”, he answered her back half laughing and completely trying to get rise out of her.
“No, Lucy!! And a little, tiny dog!!,” she answered louder now.
“No, we are going to name ‘HIM’, yes a boy dog, Jim Henson!”, he said emphatically. (He has always been a huge fan, so for him this is a joke, but what a little bit serious, too).
Here is the type of dog she would like to name “Lucy”!!
“No, daddy, Lucy, Lucy, Lucy!!”, she is now not only louder if possible, but also repeating the name hoping the more times she says it the more probable that she will in fact get a dog and name it Lucy.
He’s now trying to reason with her says, “What about Bruno? That is the dog in Cinderella.
“No, I don’t like the name Bruno and only like Lucy,” She tells him without giving up her hand on this.
“I am so getting a man cave, a big dog named Bruno and calling it a day, because I am already outnumbered with all the women and ‘x’ chromosomes in this house!”, he says as he laugh a bit more.
A few minutes went by, where they we laying there and just being father/daughter silliness. When, my younger daughter finally woke up from all the commotion and laughter and said, “Girls I brought my friends (Mickey and Minnie Mouse Stuffed animals).”
Now he responded, “Hey, I am not girl! What about saying good morning to me?”
“You are girl, we are all girls!!”, my youngest said without even thinking about it.
“I fight with one over the size, name and gender of our non-existent dog and the other just thinks we all are girls. So much for winning!”, He turned to me laughing and having trouble not finding the humor in this whole conversation.
By the way, the above conversation took place in our queen sized bed on Sunday morning, which happened to be lazy and we were still in bed at a bit after 9 am. So unprecedented in our house, where usually at least one if not both of our girls are up and raring to go. But nonetheless this was our version of a lazy Sunday Morning Conversation, I suppose.
It actually started with my husband and I being up first, but our oldest as you can see quickly joined in and jumped right in the middle of us in our warm Sunday morning bed. Followed by the youngest, after awhile.
To know my husband, he truly is the best father and is so good with being a male truly surrounded by all “girls”. It can’t be easy, but he does tease them a lot and goes right back at them when they come out with whatever they are thinking (which around here could be just about anything).
I sit back quite often and take in the show even after all this time quite amazed at how much of a loving and doting father he is and how much they enjoy his company. To the outside person, they might have read the above and thought, “What father wouldn’t just get his daughter a dog for her to name,” but he seriously just loves teasing them, getting under skin and seeing their reactions.
By the end of this whole conversation, not only was he cracking up, but so were both of the girls. And by the way, even I couldn’t help, but giggle listening to them together, because the three of them are not only my world, but their silly conversations are just music to my ears.
And this is just another reason I love my husband so!!

Thanks so much Eddy and sometimes I do find myself repeating a bit too. That said, what is the name of your blog and is it live yet for all to see? Would love to visit you back on there π Have a wonderful day, too now!!!
Dani Ryan says
Bahahaha. My husband feels outnumbered here, too. And because it's just The Kid and me all day, we're like a little team. π He thinks it's cute now, but he has no idea what he's in store for once she hits puberty. If he thinks my PMS is bad, he's in for a real treat during the teenage years. π
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Dani. My husband knows how outnumbered and always says he doesn't look forward to puberty or the teen years. That is why the male dog is a bit of a sticking point for the poor guy!!! π π
Bill says
He's a good one. It's not easy being in a house full of females, and I say that with respect, but Kevin seems to handle it almost effortlessly. I enjoyed this post; give Kevin a pat on the back for me.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks Bill and I totally will. I agree Kevin is great with the way he handles being in a house full of girls. I was glad to share and give him a bit of his own due here π
Jane Marsh says
This is one of my new favourites by you. And what a great "good Daddy" story. I hope he gets his Jim Henson!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks Jane and I am sure someday in the upcoming future he will get his very own Jim Henson π
Lanaya @ Raising Rea says
That is too sweet. Your hubby is a great daddy. The conversations Reagan and Brian have melt my heart sometimes.
She loves to call daddy a "Big Girl…" It's so cute.
xoxo
Lanaya
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Lanaya and sounds like Brian is a wonderful daddy, too!! I admit sometimes I will just listen (almost eavesdrop), because it is too cute and can't help myself π π xoxo!!!
Amy Perdew says
Funny! My husband Gerry(jerry) is like that with the kids and it makes me laugh so much. They do and say some pretty crazy stuff together. Sounds like a pretty fun conversation to be in. Really cute post. I love moments like this the most in being a mom and wife of a fantastic man.
Janine Huldie says
Amy, I truly enjoy hearing their conversations too and I love being able to share them here, as well. Sounds like your husband is similar to Kevin and happy to hear that you too have some great moments like this, too π
Amy Perdew says
We do! : ) I forgot to tell you thanks for linking up with me yesterday. Shout out via Facebook.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thank you for hosting and happy to link up with you!! π π
Emily Cappo says
Great post for your link-up…as the only female in our house, I know how Kevin feels, although I am like him — joking about all the "men" I am surrounded by. Tell Kevin he is the "king" of the house — I call myself the "Queen." π
Janine Huldie says
Emily, I love that you call yourself the "Queen" and will tell you if Kevin reads this later will love you for saying he should be referred to as the "King" lol!! π π
Happy Wives Club&tra says
It's been so much fun getting to know your family through this link up. That Kevin is an awesome (and cute :)) guy! I voted for you last night but they wouldn't let me vote for you again today :(.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so very much Fawn for doing this link-up and totally look forward to it weekly now π Thanks so very much for the votes, too. I think it works daily, but if you vote in the evening then you can't vote again until the following evening if that makes sense, but thank you so very much again for trying!!
Kat Biggie says
So cute! I love that puppy! I want one like her too!! π
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Alexa. You and Emma would get along perfectly. She loves little dogs like the one above π π
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Julie and I tend to agree from reading many of your posts, too π
Rita Abitabile says
All I can say is Kevin is the best father and I know how much he loves his daughters and you. He is patient and kind and you two are a perfect match.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much mom. Seriously, I know we have our moments, but we do love each other and the kids a ton π π
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so very much Melanie and I have to admit I loved writing this one up, because it was just so my life (Kevin and the kids). These really (because of that) are the most fun ones to write π π
Christy Birmingham says
You are all having so much fun with the silliness π Great post!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Christy for saying that and for tweeting, too π
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Amy and she heard the name Lucy for a dog when we were away last summer at the beach house. Kevin's cousin's dog was named Lucy and she still remembers that dog and loved that tiny, little dog π
Joyce says
We had always owned male dogs who although loved my husband, favored me. Now we have the female variety and are seeing the opposite. I truly believe female dogs become more attached to men and visa versa. Kevin can fight the women in the family by saying he wants a male dog, but reality is that he's better off with a female. As for Lucy, both my daughters have mentioned wanting to name a daughter Lucy . . . which means that will probably be the name of my son's kid. π

Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks Joyce for sharing and I will mention this to Kevin. I, too, like the name Lucy and would have named Lily that, but I chose Emma, so it was Kevin's turn and he chose Lily π Heading to your blog in a few!!
Camilleta says
That's too funny! You could always get a big dog named Bruno AND a small dog named Lucy. π
Janine Huldie says
Camille, this is how I ended up with two kids only 16 months apart, lol!! No seriously thanks for the suggestion and in the future we will see who actually winds out π π
Cyndi says
Janine! It's been a crazy day – sorry I'm getting over here late. This was too funny! I love the big dog/little dog combo solution, LOL.
Janine Huldie says
Oh seriously Cyndi, no worries and believe me I am I can totally understand, thanks for stopping by though. Glad you enjoyed and hope that your evening is less crazy π
Audrey says
Your post cracked me up! My husband was also waaaayy outnumbered–so when we got a dog–girl dog—named her Sasha–so he could pretend she was a male
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Audrey and think Kevin might kill me if I do that to him in the future on purpose!! π
Janine Huldie says
Oh man Richard, seriously you and Kevin could totally hang out and never miss a beat, because sounds like you could totally relate to his plight. As for Lucy, it is the name of Kevin's cousin's dog and she got to know her when were on vacation at the beach house this past summer. Apparently, she remembers this dog quite fondly!! π
Katherines Corner says
giggle,…. Hugs and Thank you for sharing at the hop π
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much as always for having the link-up and happy to join in π π

I found you through Raising Imperfection and I'm so glad I did. My husband is a Daddy to three girls and I absolutely love watching him with all of them. He's so great. And two of our girls happen to be Lilly and Emma! Crazy! We were lucky to add a boy to the mix in December, but watching my husband with all his Daddy's girls will always be one of my favorite things to do.
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so much Gina and would love to follow you back. It you get a chance write me back with you site and will definitely check you out. And thanks again π π
The Next Step says
that is so cute – my 5yo said (when she was barely 4), we are getting two kitties – the grey one will be Lucy and the orange one will be Quasie.
???
i love that we have no clue where they come up with this stuff
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Lori I truly usually have no clue where they come up with the half of the half. This time I do know that Lucy is the name of Kevin's cousin's dog that she got to know and love over the summer when we vacationed with her. So, I believe that is where she got the name from, but still I could ask and probably get a whole different answer!! π
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Jamie and it was. Hoping for a repeat tomorrow if possible π π
Michelle Liew says
Janine, thanks for linking up to the Writer's Post, sorry that I missed this earlier! Hey, if we even get the chance to talk to our friends it is a rarity! Thanks for sharing…and these little conversations we have with our family members are really the ones which make us smile.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Michelle and was so happy to link up. so true about the conversations with our friends and the ones with our families do indeed make us smile that much more!!! π

Chris HyeThymeCafe says
Reminds me of how I used to harass my sister – she wanted to have a little girl and name her Lucy. I always insisted that I refused to be aunt to one of the Peanuts! π If he thinks he's got it tough now, just wait til they're teenagers! LOL [#TALU]
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Chris that story was so cute and sounds truly about right for sisters from what I have seen so far from my own two girls. And I truly don't even want to think about the teenage years, yet!! π

Janine Huldie says
Thank you so very much Joan and I try so hard to enjoy each moment, especially moments such as these, because I know they will only be this little for so long. I couldn't agree with you more π π
