I could feel my eyes adjusting to the Sunday morning sunlight streaming into my bedroom.
As I began to open them and also lift my head off the pillow, I could sadly feel the familiar pressure in my head.
See for years, I have suffered from migraines.
As far back as my early twenties, I can recall being afflicted by migraine headaches. Thankfully I was single and I only had to worry about myself.
Back then, it was deemed hormonal from using oral contraceptives. My then OB/Gyn had given me a list of preventive measures.
Over the years, I have tried my best to adhere to these as I can.
Now almost 15 plus years later, I am no longer on oral contraceptives. But still from time-to-time, I will be affected by migraines.
Take for instance the given morning I described when I first opened this article.
It was a normal fall Sunday morning. Whereas in my younger days, I only had to worry about myself. This recent Sunday, I would be needed to not only parent my two daughters all day, but also attend my older daughter’s outdoor soccer game, and enjoy some more outdoor fall family fun, too.
Therefore, I knew I needed fast relief.
But what would I need to do in order to be able to fight this migraine at the source and function for the day’s activities ahead?
Read on for my five migraine busting tips now…
1. Ice packs can be a godsend.
When I feel a migraine coming on, one of my go-to tricks is to apply an ice pack over my eyes while I lay or sit down with my eyes closed. See the cold from the ice seems to help soothe, numb and reduce the migraine pain.
2. Eat at normal time intervals.
Being a mom, I have sometimes found that I may miss a meal or even eat later than normal, because I am busy taking care of everyone else. However, if I miss a meal or eat late, the chances that I will find myself with a migraine headache will increase greatly. And if I already am fighting a migraine headache off, I subsequently know that I must eat normal throughout the day in order to help further fight off the ensuing headache.
3. Drink lots of water.
Sticking once again to plain water seems to be advantageous when dealing with migraine headaches.
4. Massage therapy can do a world of good.
The actual trigger(s) for a migraine sometimes might not be completely clearcut. However, one way to break up a migraine is by getting a neck massage. While I happen to go to a chiropractor, where he has a massage therapist on the premises, not everyone may have access to this. Still, if someone in your own home can try to massage your neck muscles while you lay face down, this can help loosen some of the tension that may be causing some of the migraine pressure, you are experiencing. I have found that even when I can’t get to a professional for this, my own husband can help alleviate some of the pain from just working on my neck for 5 – 10 minutes.
5. Excedrin® Migraine can save the day.
Let’s face it, all of the above have helped me. But I have actually found for the worst of my headaches, I need to take Excedrin® products, such as Excedrin® Migraine or Excedrin® Tension Headache for them.
[Tweet “Learn how to deal with migraines and #MoreMomentsWithExcedrin #ad”]
Why?
Because Excedrin® Migraine especially actually starts to relieve migraine pain in 30 minutes.
Thankfully, I recently found Excedrin® products in the “Pain Relief” aisle and purchased both Excedrin® Migraine and Excedrin® Tension Headache during a recent Walmart shopping trip.
So, when my migraine headache demands a migraine headache solution, I have truly found Excedrin® Migraine to be a fast migraine headache relief for me.
As for that recent Sunday morning, I am happy to report that I was able to rid myself of that nasty migraine headache thanks in part to Excedrin® Migraine.
I was also even able to attend my daughter’s soccer game to watch my daughter excitedly play and her team even win the game that day.
An added plus, we also had some much needed fall fun on that day, too.
So all’s well that ended well.
By the way, if you also think you may be suffering from migraines I suggest that you consult your doctor first and foremost. But once diagnosed, I am hopeful that many of my above tips and tricks should be a help to you in being able to deal with these migraines, as well as to enjoy those special moments in your life.
Jhanis says
I have terrible migraine attacks from time to time and it gets worst whenever I have my period! I use a local OTC pain reliever (paracetamol + caffeine) and it helps. No other pain reliever helps, I’ve tried them all. But I think Excedrin would work on me too because I can see it has caffeine.
Janine says
Jhanis, I started getting migraines with period in my early twenties. And like you I agree the caffeine seems to make a difference. That said I hope you can try Excedrin for your migraines now as I really do think it can help you as the cause to your migraines seem to be similar to mine and Excedrin does work for me.
Seana Turner says
I don’t get them often, but I have had a couple. I have some friends who really struggle with them, and my daughter went through a battle with them during adolescence. Drinking water definitely helps, and medications can help if you take them soon enough. My heart goes out to all those who suffer because they are just so miserable!
Janine says
So sorry to hear that your daughter and even yourself have had to deal even just slightly from this. But do agree drinking water and taking medicine ASAP does indeed help, I have found.
AnnMarie John says
I do suffer from migraines but mine are so intense that I need more than Excedrin. I’m on prescribed meds for mine and they are no joke! There are days when I’m so debilitated that I can’t do a thing, all I can do is lay in bed with the covers over my head and room in complete darkness.
Janine says
Aw, so sorry to hear this and I will say I have been fortunate that my migraines can indeed be helped with Excedrin thankfully. But still the dark and lack of light definitely has helped me, as well.
Meredith Spidel says
I have one right now, so perfect timing! Going to go down some more water! Thanks for the tips, friend!
Janine says
Happy I could help, but sorry you are dealing with a migraine right now though.
William Holland says
We are all blessed in this family. Not one of us has ever had a migraine. I’ll pass this along to friends who suffer regularly. Thanks, Janine, and Happy Wednesday to you.
Janine says
Glad you all have been blessed, but thank you also for passing this info on to those who may be in need. Happy Wednesday once again to you, too!! π
Cristi Comes says
Great tips! Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated is a HUGE one for me. And I also find that a little caffeine helps when I get a bad headache. {client}
Janine says
Me too, Cristi to all of the above. Just glad to know it isn’t just me π
Home and Horizon says
Great post – I haven’t heard of the product but possibly that’s because they don’t sell it in the UK. Since adolescence I’ve suffered from migraines – I’ve tried everything from contraceptions to daith piercings (and wrote a post on it!). Nothing seems to cure them but I do agree with eating regularly and steering clear of musky smells!
Janine says
Sorry you too suffer and thank you though for sharing what works for you here with me, too.
Tamara says
You know, I don’t get them. I had one once, I think, when I was 13 and it was SO WEIRD. I wonder if it was hormonal? It was not long before my first period.
I see people really suffering from them, so this post is awesome and real. I’ll share!
Janine says
Thanks so much for sharing and can’t believe we don’t share this, too my twin though!!
Aunt Gloria says
Gratefully, migraines are not something I have to deal with. But I do have friends, like you, who suffer. Good tips – which I will pass along. Excedrin for Migraines sounds like a big help. Hope you won’t need it too soon. xxoo
Janine says
Thanks Aunt Gloria and I hope I don’t either. But still glad that if I do I can use this!! xoxo π
Nellie says
oh man, I haven’t had migraines but I know plenty of my friends that have, this seems like a really good solution so I will make sure I recommend Excedrin to them for relief.
Janine says
Glad you can recommend and also happy though to hear you haven’t suffered from migraines though, too Nellie.
Allison Smith says
I’m really luck – I’ve never had a migraine. Rich gets them everyone in a while – and we do have Excedrin Migraine on hand!
Janine says
So sorry to hear Rich suffers from them, too. But glad the Excedrin Migraine does indeed help him, as well.
Jen says
Every time I get low on water, I get a headache. It’s so dumb, but when will I learn?!
Great tips my friend, and yes thank heavens for Excedrin!
Janine says
I know Jen definitely hear you not he water issue and agree also about Excedrin, too!!
Mary says
Oh Yes, Oh Yes I know the feeling you are describing. Migraines are the worst, the constant throbbing, the sensitivity to light, the unrelenting pressure; sometimes itβs too much to bear. I keep Excedrin migraine close at all times; it’s the only thing that relieves the pain quick fast and in a hurry. .
Janine says
Sorry you know this pain well, too. But glad that Excedrin does indeed help you, as well!!
Christine Carter says
OH Janine, I’m so sorry you suffer from migraines! I hear they are unbearable! I get headaches ALL the time, but never migraines. I will pass this along to the many people I know who do, though.
Janine says
Sorry you suffer from headaches, but glad to hear they aren’t migraines still. Also, thank you for sharing with those that do suffer.
Rea says
It’s tough to feel pain when you’re out doing some important things. I do get headaches from time to time but I’m not even quite sure if they’re migraines or what. Usually I just drink water and sleep and if I can’t seem to fight it, I take my trusted meds. These are great tips and thanks for sharing these here!
Janine says
Happy to share, but sorry to hear that you too sometimes suffer from headaches, as well.
Leslie says
I can only imagine how stressful it might be to be worried that a migraine might hit you at any moment…especially when you’ve got to be ‘on duty’ with the kids. I’m thankful not to suffer from migraines myself, but if my girls ever develop this problem, then I’ll be sure to remember these tips.
Janine says
Glad to share just in case still, Leslie π
