Our dog, Elsa just turned 4 years old recently. We first got her as a puppy here. One of the first things we did, when she was a puppy, was to pay for training classes.
Honestly both my husband and I had dogs growing up. But we still felt we needed to brush up on just how to help train and reward our dog. During these classes, we attended them as a family unit. So this meant our young daughters also attended to help them learn, too.
See we wanted to make sure our dog was well behaved. But also fit into our family and lifestyle as best as possible. And fit into our family she most certainly does.
Our Elsa is truly the sweetest thing. See she really is so lovable. But honestly has no idea of her size at all. She usually hangs with me daily while I work from home. So quite often I get her nuzzling into me while work.
She also will somehow find her way on her hind legs to wrap her arms around my neck to give me hugs and kisses. I guess you could say she loves me. And even considers herself my third child having 2 human daughters who are 7 and 8 years old. She also does this with both my girls and husband, too.
Still, training was essential during those puppy years.
Plus, I honestly couldn’t be happier that we did take those training classes. Because at 4 years old, Elsa is once again a good girl. She also knows many basic commands because of this training. Her favorites are sit, lay down, responding to her own name when called and even shaking paw!
So, of course when she does any of these are just well behaved, we do our best to reward her.

But how do we reward our girl?
Check out how for some great tips and advice on how to help reward your own dog…
4 Easy Ways to Reward Your Dog
1. Instant gratification is a must.
Meaning once your dog performs the desired behavior, make sure to reward immediately. Waiting truly is only a distraction and doesn’t help to have them repeat said behavior. See if you wait your dog won’t truly know what they were being rewarded for. Why? Because they have short term memory. Meaning that they will forget within seconds what you are indeed rewarding for.
2. Short but sweet.
See you want to make sure that your commands are simple and direct. This means you don’t want to make your directions into a paragraph or even a few short phrases. Instead make sure to keep it to two or three words at best. This mean if you want your dog to sit, tell them just that.
Here are a few simple commands to give your dog for rewarding them as follows:
- Sit
- Stay
- Down (for “lie down”)
- Off (for “get off of me” or “get off the furniture”)
- Come
3. Be consistent.
Meaning if you use the command “Sit” with your dog, then so should everyone else in the family. Because using different commands to mean the same thing only helps to confuse your dog. Also this means only rewarding the good behavior and not the bad. As you want to make sure your dog consistently understanding the difference between right and wrong.

I’ve been considering sending my dogs to obedience school because they NEVER listen. For some reason they think sit means to jump around and do whatever they feel like. I’ve never tried these before, I wonder if they’ll like it. I may have to pick them up and see.
Janine says
Hope you can pick some up as Elsa actually loves all three flavors I shared here π
Tamara says
She’s just so cute!!
The Instant Gratification is so important. They forget when they do things if you wait too long to reward or even scold.
We love these treats. We’ve had Nutrish products for ages, and Athena has never complained!
Janine says
Aw, thanks Tamara and love that Athena also has had Nutrish products now, too π
