5 Issues Women Can Face in the Workplace

Filed Under: jobs Tagged With: Job Tips

Research has shown that business organizations with females in their workforce tend to get more financial profit and productivity than those with fewer women. Despite the evident importance of women, still, this gender is going through a lot in their working environment.

I found HKM, who are lawyers for employment, are competent in what they do; if you face any challenges at your workplace, hire them and get what you deserve. They, like many other employment law firms, have vast knowledge in the discrimination that women can face in the workplace.

This post will learn about the several issues women face in their workplace.

Women Can Face In the Workplace Tips

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is one of the major problems women face across the globe. When harassed, they fear coming forward to report since no one cares; no one is ready to defend or listen to them. Another reason for their silence is job security; once they talk about the case, they will be fired at their workplace.

The Gender Pay Gap

The gender pay gap, in simple terms, is the amount of money that women receive relative to men. According to several research studies, women are victims when it comes to salary payment.

Generally, women receive approximately 34% less than what men get, despite doing equal tasks and the same qualification. When a woman is employed in entry-level positions, they get low pay rates, and the gap will only increase the higher they go, while men receive a huge salary at their first entry.

Maternity and/or Pregnancy Discrimination

Maternity/pregnancy discrimination is when the employer victimizes women based on childbirth and other related circumstances. The bias may comprise time off denial, dismissal or demoting a pregnant employee, work restrictions, etc.

Discrimination has made over 40,000 women jobless because of how their employers mistreat them at the workplace. Some companies, during the recruiting process, are very curious about women’s marriage and other family planning activities. All this is because they don’t want maternity leaves and other perks during the service duration.

Microaggressions

Microaggressions are signs of inequality and disrespect; this affects an individual’s general performance and happiness. It is a common term at the workplace, whereby the target individual is negatively impacted by the comments or actions done against them. Microaggression can either be intentional or unintended, but the offended will not take it lightly, as they are hurt.

Globally 64% of women are victims of microaggressions in their working environment. They have to go the extra mile in proving what they can do more than the male gender.

To some, microaggressions may be a minor scenario, especially when only one person is the victim; however, it can affect when they add up. Women who face microaggressions tend to have a negative picture of their workplace. They see their working environment as unfair; to some, they opt to quit the job.

Representation

Women are viewed as less equal in the leadership tasks, this type of stereotyping has been going on for years. When it comes to gender representation at every position in their workplace, women are left behind.

When it comes to top management positions, women are discriminated against; in 500 companies, you will only get less than 20 ladies at the top posts. Of late, the number has increased, but companies have to work hard and eradicate this type of discrimination.

Conclusion

Women have fallen into captivity of the norms that society has set. Their effort to march on the streets to fight for their rights still no change. Women should be treated the same way as their male counterparts.
