Recently, we celebrated our dog’s fifth birthday here. I still cannot believe that our girl is no longer a puppy, but a full-fledged adult dog.
I can still very much recall that day five years ago that we brought her home with us. She laid on my lap whining for the whole car ride home.
However, those early puppy days do now seem like a bit of a blur and hazy to me. Back then, she didn’t sleep through the night and I had to walk her myself. Slowly, but surely that first year, she adjusted to her new surroundings. She trained pretty quickly and the days, as well as nights, got easier for that and more.
But now, over five years later, she indeed an adult dog. So, many of the puppy rules that applied back then, no longer apply to our girl. Still, we want to maintain her health and have her with us for at least another five years or more if possible.
Therefore, we are actively doing all we can to keep our adult dog as healthy as possible to prolong her adult life as much as we can.
What are some of the things we have done to indeed keep our dog in good health?
Read on to find out now:
5 Perfect Ways to Help Your Adult Dog Stay Healthy
1. Keep your dog active daily.
As a puppy, we took our dog to the dog park. But as an adult dog, not that we haven’t thought to use the dog park, but we have a large-size backyard. So, for exercise, Elsa is out in the backyard as much as she wants. Often either the kids or one of us is out in our backyard playing with her. She also likes to run around the backyard and take laps. So, we don’t discourage that as it helps keep her active and get some of her energy out, as well.
2. Continue to feed your dog good nutrients.
Dog food usually is in line with a dog’s general age. I mean puppies are generally fed puppy dog food version. Most brands also carry adult and even senior versions of dog food. So, makes sense to feed your dog age appropriate dog food that has the right nutrients for their age. PURINA ONE® makes an adult dog food formula that is natural with added vitamins, minerals & nutrients (*Excluding Vibrant Maturity 7+ Formula). Plus, their dog food is crafted in Purina-owned facilities in the USA. It is also veterinarian recommended, as it has 0% fillers, 100% nutrition, where every ingredient has a purpose. So, it is a complete & balanced adult dog food. (*Only on mainline and Targeted).

Our girl’s eyes and coat seemed to be clearer and overall healthier. Why? Because the omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins & minerals provided by PURINA ONE® helped to aid in this healthy appearance.

3. Visit the vet for scheduled checkups.
As a puppy, our girl and other puppies need regular checkups for certain puppy vaccinations. Well, even as adult dogs, dogs need regular visits to their Vet for vaccinations from time-to-time. Plus, they are weighed to see that they are maintaining a healthy weight. Moreover, the Vet can just make sure that they are indeed still OK and not having any issues as they are beginning to get older.
4. Groom as needed.
While, I know many who groom more often than not, we do our best to follow the groomer’s guidelines. See, grooming is a great way to keep your dog clean. But very often, too much grooming may cause issues with the oils in their skin. So, for this reason, we once again make sure to groom, but not over-groom our dog.
5. Keep the fun times coming.
Just because our dog isn’t a puppy anymore, doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy playing with toys or socializing with her family or others, such as extended family or friends. So, we make sure to keep a good supply of toys in our home for her. Plus, we do our best to have plenty of socialization time, as well for her. Toys and being around others should help keep an adult dog happy and healthier overall.
There you have 5 simple, but effective ways to help keep your adult dog healthy at this stage in his or her life.

All right, something I can relate to and sink my teeth into. Maggie and I thank you for the suggestions. Maggie is wagging her tail in response. 🙂 Happy Hump Day, Janine.

Athena is five now too! I can’t believe it.
She has a small heart murmur so has to be on special food and Purina is one of the approved brands. We buy one of the Purina ONE products but it has chicken in it.
I’ll check these out!
By the way, Elsa’s haircut is amazing.
Janine says
Aw, thanks and honestly always love when Elsa gets her hair cut as she looks so put together to me. And yay for five and Purina for Athena, too!! 🙂

Love this! And I missed it last week when you published, and so I thought I’d comment now. I’m a dog-lover (and a cat-lover and a general animal-lover, hehe). My boy is already 6.5 years old! I can’t believe how time flies! He’s a big mess, but really loyal to me. 🙂 Love your tips here. Right now, as I type, he’s at my mother in laws having a doggie play date. Hehe. When husby goes over to check on his mom, he brings our dog to play with her dog in the dog pen. It’s fun for everyone! Haha. Sending you big hugs and wishes for a wonderful week! xo
Janine says
Aw, love that your dog has playdates at your MILs. Seriously, that made me smile more than you know. Happy Monday once again and hoping your week is off to a great start now, as well xoxo <3
