5 Ways to Cut Costs on Your House Remodel

Filed Under: home improvement Tagged With: Home Improvement

When you start contemplating the idea of a house remodels, your biggest fear is likely to be going over budget. And it would not be an unfounded fear since houses always tend to spring surprises upon unsuspecting contractors and homeowners. Where you least expect it, you may find a leak, mold, termites, or any other issue that would entirely wreck your budget. That is why home remodeling company – Home Care Contractors recommends the best 5 ways to cut costs on your house remodel. This way, you may end up having some money left over once the project is finished instead of having to dip into your savings to take care of those extras that crop up.

Cut Costs on Your House Remodel Tips

1.   Get More Light Without Adding Windows

If that dark and dreary bathroom is driving you crazy, consider adding a light tube. You would save quite a bit by not cutting a hole on the side of your house and rearranging and rebuilding the framing. A light tube can easily be installed between the rafters, and you would be amazed at the amount of light it brings in.

2.   Do the Demo Yourself

Proceed with care and tackle some of the demolition on your own. Don’t go overboard on the demolition if this is your first time; stick to safe areas such as decks that do not involve electrical or plumbing or load-bearing walls. Otherwise, instead of saving, the project’s cost may skyrocket.

3.   Donate What You Don’t Need

Quite a bit of the stuff you would be throwing out during a house remodel is usable for someone else. Before starting to demo, call an organization like Habitat for Humanity. They will stop by your house and remove fixtures and materials, old cabinets, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and anything salvageable. You may save on waste disposal and dumpster rental, and do a good deed at the same time.

4.   Put in Some Sweat Equity

Just as you were able to save money during the demolition phase, you can also tackle some projects at the end. If you have painted before, tell your contractor that you will do the painting. You may also help with sanding or installing insulation. You can also save by taking care of the clean-up as frequently as possible. You don’t need to spend your money paying someone to pick up sawdust or take out the trash.

While you are at it, ask your contractor if there are certain items you can pick up and save on delivery costs.

5.   Consider Alternatives

You may want hardwood throughout your home, but your budget may not allow it. Don’t despair and consider cheaper alternatives. These days there are wood-look tiles or good-quality laminates that will give you a great wood look for a fraction of the price and may even last longer. Or maybe you want that marble countertop for your kitchen. If so, consider quartz or large pieces of ceramic tile that will give you the same effect for much less money. The alternatives will not only be easier to take care of but much more budget-friendly than the originals. That pretty wallpaper may have to wait for now and be happy to get all the walls painted and look renewed.

If you’re planning a house remodel, there are several ways to cut costs without compromising on quality. By careful planning, choosing cost-effective materials and fixtures, and doing some of the work yourself, you can save thousands of dollars on your remodel. With a little effort, you can have the home of your dreams without breaking the bank.
