I know it has been awhile here since my last book reviews’ update. I honestly meant to share my recent Goodreads books from the last few months. But time just truly got away from yours truly.
Plus, my end of the year reading slowed slightly with our Disney trip, as well as working overtime blogging and designing for clients. I still managed to complete my 40 Goodreads books challenge for 2017 though.
However for the first time, I put my BOTM on deferment for a month in November with all on my plate. But happily, I picked a BOTM for December. To find out which book I chose from BOTM and read in less than 24 hours recently, read on now. Plus, hope you will find a few Good Reads yourself now from my recent reads.

6 Good Reads to Enjoy This Winter
1. The Status of All Things, by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke
For those who love social media posts, such as Facebook, this novel hits the right notes. See Kate and Max are to be married on an island in Hawaii. Something goes terribly wrong at their rehearsal dinner. Kate’s fiancé, Max breaks off their engagement to be with Kate’s friend and co-worker, Courtney.
Kate is understandably devastated. She takes to Facebook to finally share the bad news. But somehow whatever she posts/wishes on Facebook starts to come true. Plus, her Facebook posts completely disappear once they do become true.
First off as a Facebook and social media person, I loved the plot line here. That said, while the book had a fun and easy tone while reading. It also delved into the idea of destiny versus being able to change or control it. Which was also a clever touch to me. Lastly, I not only enjoyed the story line, but then ending just felt right, too.
My Good Reads Winter 2018 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
2. Turtles All the Way Down, by John Green
What can I say here? But after having read and adored The Fault in Our Stars, I have a special place for John Green’s novels. So, I have read all his others thus far now, too. I also especially loved Paper Towns portrayal of Q’s adventures to find Margaret Roth Spiegelman.
Therefore, I really wanted to love his latest YA book. I even pre-ordered it with my October BOTM. But I just couldn’t completely get into the story of 16 year old Aza, who suffers from anxiety. Aza along with her friend, Daisy decide to figure out the mystery of the missing billionaire, Russell Pickett.
Honestly though, from the early on moment that the girls were “gifted” the reward money from Russell’s teenage son (Davis) to keep what they have learned quiet, I began to lose interest. Plus, the so-called romantic possibility of Aza and Davis felt lacking.
One plus was that the portrayal of anxiety and mental illness was realistic. But still, that wasn’t enough to keep the plot line truly moving. As for the ending, I had to read it 3 times to finally get the full weight of it. That said, I did enjoy the way, Green summed up this one. Just wish the overall story to get there was more enjoyable.

3. What to Say Next, by Julie Buxbaum
After having read and absolutely fell in love with Tell Me Three Things, by Julie Buxbaum, I could not wait to read another YA book by her. So, I happily put a copy of What to Say Next on hold from my public library.
First off, the story of Kit Lowell and David Drucker is one that will not be forgotten by me any time soon. See Kit is dealing with the aftermath of having lost her dad in a tragic car accident. So she turns to an unlikely source for comfort and friendship with David. See before the accident, Kit is fairly popular and not lacking for friends. Conversely, David is a loner and a bit of a social outcast at school. But after the accident, Kit feels like her friends truly don’t get her and what she is going through. But David is easy to be around, because he seems to get Kit and is also refreshingly open and honest with her. Therefore, Kit turns to David for friendship at first. But then, possibly more.
But what Kit doesn’t know is that there is more to David’s story than meets the eye. Plus, Kit is keeping a pretty big secret herself from David. However, the two together just seem to make sense and honestly just couldn’t help, but root for them. So, let’s just say that as much as I adored Tell Me Three Things, I now equally enjoyed and have a special place in my heart for What to Say Next, too.

4. Surprise Me, by Sophie Kinsella
What can I say, but I am and have been a huge Sophie Kinsella fan ever since her early days of penning Confessions of A Shopaholic. So, I cannot thank NetGalley and The Dial Press for offering me an ARC of this newest novel, by Sophie Kinsella.
While none of Kinsella’s books are earth shattering in nature by any means. All have always been enjoyable and light, but fun reads for me. This latest edition was truly all of the above and than some. Here we were introduced to Sylvie and Dan. The two are seemingly happily married couple. But when a routine doctor’s appointment finds them being told that they will live for another 68 years, both are shell shocked to say the least.
What ensues are the two of them getting freaked out and this causes them to try to create more surprises in their marriage. This in turn causes some strive and mishaps. Plus, old secrets come to light. The secrets exposed were definitely a surprise to me. Also this, then , leads the two to question their happy marriage. How the two deal with these new developments and more is where the book really takes off. Plus, the ending is one that I would highly recommend seeing through to as it was well worth the payoff.

5. All I Want for Christmas, by Jennifer Gracen
I don’t usually read books that are FREE on Kindle or iBooks for a limited time. Not sure why now. As I downloaded this and literally devoured in under 24 hours time.
See the love story of Cassandra Baines and Sean McKinnon finding each other again after years apart might not have been earth shattering in any means, but it was just what I needed during the stressful holiday times right now. Why? Because this book was not only easy to read, but a real fun and heartfelt book at Christmas time nonetheless.
I would totally recommend for anyone just looking to relax and cuddle up on a cold winter, holiday night with a book to make you believe once again in Christmas miracles. Added bonus as a lifelong New Yorker, loved the NYC Christmas time references of Rockefeller Center and more.
My Good Reads Winter 2018 Books Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
6. The Wife Between Us, by Greer Hendricks
I chose this as my December BOTM. See from the description of that you will make assumptions as you read, but that you shouldn’t make assumptions. Because of this, I wouldn’t be able to put it down. Therefore, all of the above had me intrigued.
So what can I say that won’t give away any real spoilers? Well for one there are four major plot twists. One comes at the end of part one, the next at the conclusion of part 2, still another plot twist at the end of part three. And just when you think you know all another bombshell gets also revealed in the epilogue, as well.
That said this book most definitely delivered what it promised with not making assumptions. Plus, I read it in less the 2 days time as I clearly couldn’t stop reading it. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the next plot twist blindsided me. Plus, like I already mentioned right up until the end the author left you guessing with the last of the surprises, as well. therefore, highly recommend reading cover to cover as you won’t want to miss out on the full story here.

These all sound like books I would enjoy! Too bad Turtles All The Way Down wasn’t as good as you expected though.

Aw, thanks Dara and I guess I was just hoping for more, especially after the others I have read by John Green, especially The Fault in Our Stars.
Meredith Spidel says
I can’t wait to read Surprise Me! I love Sophie Kinsella! And I have read The Status of All Things and The Wife Between Us. Will check out the others! Thanks for always being such a super reading friend, Janine!

Kenya G. Johnson says
Happy to see a Sophie Kinsella book in there that I didn’t know about. I usually listen to those on audio because they are so entertaining depending on the narrator. So I’ll check that one out for sure.
Janine says
Kenya, I have never listened to her books on Audible. But now I kind of wish I did after your share here. But do hope you can add her latest to your list and listen to soon, too 🙂
Kenya G. Johnson says
The two that come to mind are I’ve Got Your Number and My Not So Perfect Life. The audio was hilarious – excellent narrators and loved the accents.
Janine says
I read both of those and the stories were pretty funny to read. But good to know the audio was even more so 😉
William Holland says
Oddly, I’m taking a break from reading. I haven’t read in book in over three months, the first time that has happened in over ten years. I just needed a break because all the mysteries were sounding the same. 🙂
Have a superb weekend, Janine!
Debi says
What a great take on the “winter” theme! I have a stack to return to the library today; I’ll see if any of these are available for my next stack!
Janine says
I hope some of these are available and you can read a few soon, too now 🙂
Emily says
Thanks Janine – I love reading your book reviews. I bought the John Green book for my son, but he hasn’t had a chance to read it yet…maybe I’ll read it first!
Janine says
My pleasure, Emily and hope you can give John Green’s latest yourself first now 🙂
Laura Dennis says
Thanks for the suggestions. I plan to put several on my Amazon list. I am currently reading “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. I am in complete shock at what went on not too far from where I live. Would recommend to anyone, especially if you are a Pioneer Woman fan because the story takes place in and around Pawhuska.
Janine says
Thank you, Laura for the great suggestions. I am off to Goodreads to check more out about this book now! 🙂
Lisa @TheGoldenSpooms says
I have slacked off on my reading soooooooo much! It’s bad. While we were snowed in this week for three days, I found myself wishing I had a good book to read. Thought about downloading one on my iPad, but it ‘s just not the same as a real book! I think “The Status of All Things” and “The Wife Between Us” both sound intriguing!
Janine says
I definitely think you’d enjoy both of those and hope you can check them out soon, Lisa! 🙂
AnnMarie John says
The Status of All Things, sounds fascinating. That would totally be a hit for me. I’m going to see if I can download that on my Kindle. Also would make a great movie too. I’m currently reading All The Women in my Family Sings and the Measure of my Powers. Both rather good books.
Janine says
Thank you for the suggestion, too and going to have to check that one out, as well now 🙂
Kristi Campbell says
OMG I LOVE JOHN GREEN. Like love him so much. I can’t believe he wrote another book and I didn’t even know it. Thank you thank you for letting me know! Also the other ones look great too but I’m SO excited about John Green! <3
PS so happy you linked 🙂 xo
Janine says
Aw, so happy I linked up, too! And definitely know your excitement about John Green as I am also a huge fan here, too 🙂
Seana Turner says
I love a good plot twist… when I think I’ve got it figured out and then I get surprised. Will be checking out that last one!
Janine says
Yay and I agree about those plot twists. So definitely recommend the last one for that and more, Seana 🙂
clark says
hey good (and helpful) post! I’ve got ‘the Kindle’*
…anyway I find myself downloading samples (like, six or seven at a clip) because the blurbs rarely give a good sense of the books.
Will look-up some of your reviewed books
*yeah, on purpose for humor’s sake…that thing that old people do with the extra (and totally unnecessary article)
Janine says
Clark, Kindle seriously is one of my favorite ways to read. So, hope you can check out a few on yours, too now. Have a great weekend now 🙂
Mardra says
Honestly, just today I was thinking, Is it natural for me to look at those unread books with such desperate yearning?
I think you may get it.
Janine says
I totally get as I am constantly reading and still somehow have many books that I have unread and still need to read, too.
zoe says
Thanks for this. Bummer about Turtles book… I always loved the origins of that saying and while Im not as sold on the author’s other book was hoping this one would carry. I will give it a shot anyway. Thanks. Janine!
Janine says
Definitely still say give it a try as it was just my opinion. But you might find something different still when you read, too.
Mar says
Now that its cold outside I’ve been reading a lot more. There’s something about curling up on the couch with a good book and some hot tea that just warms my heart. I’m going to check out What to Say Next, it sounds very moving.
Janine says
Mary, I am so with you on reading this time of the year with getting cozy with a nice warm blanket and good book, too. And do hope you take a look at What to Say Next as definitely one of my favorites so far 🙂

Dana, I cannot thank you enough for turning me onto Tell Me Three Things and What to Say Next. Seriously, those are now tops on my recently read. And happy to share a few more with you here today, too 🙂
Pat B says
What a clever way to share your list of books. It is that time of year when reading groups starts suggesting books to read in the coming year. It is interesting to see what people suggest.
Janine says
Thanks Pat and I love seeing books suggestions as the new year unfolds, too.
