8 Jewelry Hacks You Wish You Knew Sooner

Filed Under: BLOG, Jewelry Tagged With: Jewelry Hacks

Have you ever felt the pain of being at an event when suddenly your necklace chain breaks? Or maybe while at work the back of your earring pops off and you have to forego your stylish accessory? Jewelry incidents are a common type of wardrobe malfunction. While it may not be quite as dramatic as a “nip slip”, a jewelry malfunction can be inconvenient and frustrating.

8 Jewelry Hacks You Wish You Knew Sooner

Jewelry Hacks

Help combat those jewelry malfunction blues with these jewelry hacks you will probably wish you knew about sooner. These 8 hacks are curated from online jewelry store, Shop Style Shark.

1. Quick Fix for Broken Necklace

If your necklace chain or clasp has broken, a quick fix is an ordinary paper clip. A paperclip can easily fit through the links, connecting the two broken ends together. Or, it can serve as a makeshift clasp in a pinch.

2. Get Rid of the Green

Is your jewelry turning your finger green? This is from oxidation and can cause skin irritation. Get rid of the green before it even starts by coating your jewelry with clear nail polish before you wear it. This protects your skin and serves as a barrier between the metal and you, which is what causes oxidation.

3. Untangle Knotted Chains

We’ve all experienced the frustration of a knotted jewelry chain. Unfortunately, most people don’t know that baby powder or baby oil can help lubricate the chain, making it easier to untangle the knot. Use a straight or sewing pin for tight knots.

4. Keep Necklaces from Tangling Up

When traveling, prevent your necklaces from getting tangled up by threading them through a straw. Or, for thicker chains, wrap the necklace in plastic wrap. Both options are space-saving and affordable.

5. Remove Tarnish on Jewelry

If your jewelry has become tarnished, you don’t always need to have it professionally cleaned. First, try soaking your jewelry in a mixture of hot water, baking soda, and salt. Use an aluminum bowl or a dish wrapped in aluminum foil. Soak your jewelry for two minutes.

6. Quick Fix for Lost Backings

A lost earring or pin backing can cause you to lose your jewelry item, or possibly poke yourself. If you notice you are missing a backing, find a nearby pencil with a pink erase on it. Use the eraser as a temporary backing.

7. DIY Earring Organizer

Have trouble keeping up with tiny earrings or finding matches quickly? Make a DIY earring organizer out of some cardboard or cardstock, paper, and some metal rings. Poke holes in the cardboard or stock, and then put your earrings in to keep them matched and organized. Use the metal rings to “bind” the pages together like a booklet of earring organization.

8. Size Down a Ring Without a Professional

If your favorite ring is fitting a little loose these days, you don’t have to go to a jeweler to have it sized down. Instead, buy an inexpensive tube of silicone sealant at your local hardware or department store. Coat the inside of the ring with a layer of silicone and let it dry. Then, try it on. You should have a comfortable, better-fitting ring instantly. Also, if you need to go back to the original size, you can peel off the silicone.

Conclusion

Now that you know these 8 jewelry hacks, you won’t ever have to worry about the stress of a jewelry malfunction again. You now know how to avert a crisis and make sure your jewelry is in great shape.
