A Blessing in Disguise

Back in my early twenties, I was a serial dater who could have made the Sex and the City character’s blush and even fell in love once upon a time ago with the bad boy.

You know the type.  This is the boy that could make you swoon and your panties wet just by flashing his gorgeous bad boy smile.

Foolishly, I thought I was going to live happily ever after with this capital “L” loser.

Of course, that didn’t happen, because the bad boy isn’t the boy that is the settling down type.  

Yet another doomed and failed romantic relationship, I knew I wanted more for myself.

However, never did I envision that I would meet Mister Right, let alone online of all places.

But I kept hearing great things about online dating and finally decided to take the plunge in late June 2003, joining Match.com.

Immediately, I was contacted by a few different guys who were members of the online dating community site.

I am not going to lie, a few I didn’t even bother responding to, because they weren’t my type and a few others seemed to be out for one thing and one thing only – sex.  Again, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a prude, but I also wasn’t a tramp either.  At this point, I was looking to date and get to know someone with hopes that if we clicked we could get a bit more serious.

There were two different guys that contacted me, that I did indeed talk to a bit further through e-mail, instant message and then on the phone.  

One of the two, I actually met and found out the hard way, that he was more only looking for a sexual relationship.

The second was seemingly a nice guy, but something was lacking as far as a deeper connection was concerned.

In the 3 weeks since I had joined, I had all but given up.

That was until, I found a profile of a guy on match.com that stood out and downright intrigued me.

I figured I had nothing to lose at this point and drafted a message to send to this member, who’s username was: cunningham77, which was a nod and reference to the sitcom hit series (one of my favorites and still is), Happy Days and Ron Howard’s famous character, Richie Cunningham.

Within in less then 24 hours, Cunningham77 had contacted me back.  We eventually spoke through instant message, then telephone and even made a first date about a week later.

Our first date consisted of a movie (Pirates of the Caribbean), a walk on the beach afterwards and non-stop, great all around conversation.  

I am not a girl to kiss and tell, but I will just say that by the end of that night I knew we not only were compatible conversation-wise, but also on a physical level with having gotten that first kiss out of the way.

That was over 12 years ago and we have been married for 9 years now today.

Definitely a huge blessing in disguise to say the least.

Happy Anniversary to my better half today.  Couldn’t have asked for a better or more happier ending our fateful meeting all those years ago.  Also huge congrats to him, as he was just promoted last week after working so very hard for the last five years.  So very proud of him!

    What an awesome story!! Happy Anniversary!! My sis had luck on Match; she met her hubby, as well. She had similar blessings in disguise when she first started too. We had some entertaining gents! lol

    What a fun story! I met my now hubby when I was 19, so I never tried any of those online dating services, but will be honest – I have always wondered what kind of guy they would pair me with. 🙂 Big congrats to Kevin on the promotion and Happy Anniversary!!

      Thanks Lisa and I am so not sure where I would be if I married the guy I was dating at 19 years old, but have a feeling I wouldn’t be as happily married as you are 😉

    Very cool! I was smiling all the way through this. I tried Match.com for a couple years. Great experience….I should write about some of those dates. LOL Then I met Bev by accident. Go figure!

Seriously, I am just so happy I could share that Kevin and I met this way and for the most part have found our happily ever after thanks in part to Match.com. So glad you and Bev got yours, too!!     So encouraging for anyone who is still trying to find the “right” one – that there are good guys on dating sites! You hear so many bad stories, I’m so glad you have a good one to share. And happy anniversary!

    Congratulations!! Wow, 9 years . In another 6 months Sam and I will have known each other that long. I never tried Match.com, but I did do other internet dating sites. While it didn’t work out for me, I know lots of people who have had huge success with it. Glad it worked for you guys 🙂

    Aww!! Happy Anniversary to you two! I think match.com is incredible for setting up the two of you.
    And yes, I dated bad boys too. Sometimes I was the bad girl that their mother warned them about! (not really.. but I was a heartbreaker believe it or not)

    I love this story! I can’t possibly see you being a serial dater! You met online? That’s awesome and should be an ad for the dating service….for reals!

      Thanks Kristen and we totally met online through Match.com. We actually lived only 5 minutes away, graduated the same year just from different neighboring high schools and even went to the same state college. Just goes to show you never know where you will meet someone and I wouldn’t be adverse if Match asked 😉

    Another match.com success story! Loved hearing the tale of how you two met! It’s so funny because 10 years ago it seemed so unusual to meet someone online but now it’s pretty much the norm. Crazy how so much has changed…

    Janine, I was also a serial dater. My mother used to tease me all the time, “You change boys like you change underwear.” I always managed to find something that I did not like about everyone. I met my husband at a Labor Day party & knew on our first date that he was going to be the one. I love your story. It always makes me smile to hear you tell it. You look like such a happy family.     This is such a sweet story and happy anniversary to the two of you, a little late! I have a friend here who met her husband online too, and they are very happily married as well! I met mine in college so we were quite young when we got married but 23 years later, we are still together! 🙂
