A Handy Guide to Take Care of Your Silks

Filed Under: BLOG, cleaning Tagged With: cleaning tips

Silk is a premium fabric renowned for its smooth texture & lavish feel.

It is often brought as a long-term investment or a royal present to someone special in life. However, agree or not, silk is among the most delicate of fabrics.

How you take care of and wash your silks will determine their longevity.

In this article, we are talking about taking care of your silk clothing with a holistic approach, spanning from washing, and ironing to hanging.

Read on as we dug deep into this subject.

Let the Experts Do the Cleaning

Yes, you may have tried to save some pennies by washing your silks yourself. However, this is a prevalent mistake we make, which eventually will ruin its rich feel & look in the long run. Thus, why letting an expert dry cleaner do the washing will not ensure the silk maintains its subtle luster but also its delicate hand feel, especially if there are tough stains.

However, if you feel dry cleaning your silks will be an additional burden to your monthly spending budget, we suggest opting for washable silk as it is much easier to maintain. Crafted with longevity in mind, washable silk available in various options is apt for everyday wear. There are reputed washable silk manufacturers in the market that source their garments from eco-friendly organic that is both environmentally & socially responsible. In addition, this category of silk is machine washable, so there are no hefty dry cleaner bills.

Iron Carefully

While it is absolutely fine to iron your silks, but, it is recommended to iron silk every day. Ironing needs to be done with uttermost care. Do ironing with low heat and stream, and always try to add a cotton layer between the iron and the garment.

Iron preferably inside of silk, rather than from outside as it would cause damage to the texture. Do follow the care label of the brand before you start ironing.

Hanging & Storing

To minimize ironing, store your silks on hangers in a cool, dry place. The silk material has the characteristic of creasing. Therefore, avoid folding it for too long. If you are planning to store your silk clothing for an extended period, ensure that the storage bag is made out of clean & breathable fabric.

Simply avoid plastic bags as they lack in the mixture. Also, store silks away from direct sunlight to deter fading and weakening of the fabric over time.

Another Tip:

Since silk is a protein, it may get the attention of the moths, so don’t forget to add moth repellent into the bag where you keep your silk clothing. Also, protect your silk against termites by having some camphor in a bowl of coconut oil, and then apply this to the wardrobe walls, carefully covering the corners.

The Bottom Line

In the end, switch to washable silk if you wish to ditch the hassles associated with cleaning and storing silks. As discussed earlier, washable silk requires minimal maintenance. Thus, the major reason, in recent years, it has become a buzzing fashion trend that has gained immense popularity worldwide.
