When decorating your home, you’ll likely think about the ‘big’ things initially. What color to paint it, where to put the furniture, what style of paintings you want to hang. While this is undoubtedly important, it’s not the be-all and end-all.
Once you’ve managed to sort out all the big things, it’ll be time to accessorise your home. If you feel totally out of inspiration by this point, don’t worry – we’ve put together some of our favorite ideas for accessories that’ll go with any room in your home.
Plants and flowers
Adding plants or flowers can be a wonderful way of dressing literally any room. Their natural, rounded aesthetic can take the harshness out of an otherwise angular, unnatural space, and that’s without even getting into the health benefits. If you’re having a problem choosing, a Florist in Halifax can definitely help you make the right choice for your room.
An increasing number of scientific studies are demonstrating the multiple benefits of spending time outdoors, in green spaces. While we often can’t manage that every day, accessorizing your home with plants is a great way of achieving many of those same benefits.
You can go with a smaller plant, something small that fits on your windowsill, or if you feel like really committing to the green element, you can even choose a small, slow-growing potted tree!
Candles
While you can paint the walls and dress the curtains all you like, it’s the little things that tie a room together that make it feel lived in and occupied. A great little accessory to dress any room is the candle.
There are plenty of options available, from Oud candles to scented candles. The more luxury options often come in gorgeous glass cases that really add to the atmosphere even when the candle isn’t lit. As we get further into winter, candles can also play a central role in bringing an element of warmth into the home.
Coffee tables
For living rooms and your bedroom, there’s nothing like a little coffee table. Pick a coffee table that matches the overall aesthetic of the room, and remember – you don’t want it to dominate the space. Think big enough to actually be useful, but not too big that you’re always tripping over it.
Once you’ve bought a coffee table, then you get to design its layout. You can have a little plant, your favorite magazines and art books, or even some candles. Whenever you get tired of the layout, you can simply change it.
Blanket ladders
Blanket ladders can really add to any space that they’re in. You can choose an old, short wooden ladder in any condition – if you don’t like the wood color, you can then paint it.
In living rooms and bedrooms, you can lay blankets on the rungs. In the bathrooms, you can lay bath towels, and in the kitchen, you can lay kitchen towels. It’s incredibly versatile and adds a little something to the room that it’s in.
When accessorizing, it’s important to remember to get creative. It’s easy to slip into old styling ideas based on what you’re familiar with – break the mold and try something new. If you don’t like it, it’s just an accessory – you can get rid of it or move it elsewhere.
