There is something quite special as your baby approaches the time to indeed take those first steps and go from a non-walker to a walker.
As a parent, I think you never quite forget when this happens for your kids. I know I have can remember quite clearly for both my girls, when they began to try to walk.
Emma, being my first, each new stage, was truly anticipated even before it happened. Even before she could walk though she wanted to stand. I close my eyes and am transported back to her 6 month checkup. The doctor walked in as Emma was bracing her little hand in mine and trying to stand on his exam table. He seemed concerned that her legs were not strong enough at such a young age to do this. I proceeded to relay to him that she was happiest doing this. See I so wasn’t going to fight a fussy colicky baby if it made her happy. So Then he proceeded to take a good look at her legs and told me that he was wrong and her legs were indeed strong enough and then some! Good to know that yes mother actually did know best here!
Another moment, I will never forget was being awoken in the middle of the night to Kevin say, “You better get in here!”
Now, of course, my first time mommy thoughts ran amok and had me fearing the worst. When I got in her nursery, what did I find?
I found my 7 month old baby standing all by herself holding onto to her crib railing. Yup, that sucker was lower the very next day!!
And here was now my kid who stood up holding on for the next two months after that cruising around that never really tried to crawl, because when you could stand why would you crawl on your knees. That was beneath her!
At just about 10 months old, she began to get brave and let go and here and there. Finally three days after she turned 10 months she let go and took her first steps. And shortly there after, she didn’t only walk, but she ran. And to be quite honest, she never really has slowed down since that.
And then came Lily!! Lily was so the opposite of Emma is so many instances, especially by being a generally happy baby that colic never took its hold on.
She unlike Emma took her time to smell the proverbial baby roses. At just about 6 months she was sitting up on her own, but had no desire to stand just yet. At around the 7th month mark she began to army crawl and within a week was full on crawling.
Guess what? She loved to crawl, unlike Emma would could care less about it. I thought for awhile she would crawl forever. I mean she didn’t attempt to stand on her own until almost 10 months and as she neared a year old couldn’t seem to care less about walking.
I have pictures from her first birthday party from the weekend before her actual party where she is holding on, but not walking just yet. And then it happened. I will never forget it. The day before her real 1st birthday she stood up, took her first real steps and that was it my last baby was a walker.
And yet my world was never quite the same, because now she could get into everything and as I have said before this one is so the one that is going to give me a run for my money (as my dad keeps telling me). Get into everything she did and still does. She is my adorable lovable mischief maker!!

My oldest was 13 months when he started walking and I remember at the time, I was worried because I thought he was late….until my second came along and didn't walk till 15 months. Once they were both up and walking – they were terrors LOL.
Janine Huldie says
Robin, this is so true, because all kids are truly different and walk when they want to and not a moment before!! 🙂
Kat Biggie says
Oh my goodness they are so cute! It is absolutely adorable when they start walking! Tiny actually just started walking yesterday! She's been taking 2 or 3 steps here and there, but yesterday she just started walking all over the place! She's so cute with her wide, sumo like steps! She will be 17 months old in 4 days, but being a micro preemie, we can forgive her! My older two both started walking within 2 weeks of turning one. I loved these pictures!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Alexa and that is so awesome for Tiny. I truly remember those big, sumo like steps. They really are the best and so cute, too!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thank you again Rasma for your kind words and share, too. Glad you enjoyed this one 🙂
Cyndi says
Awesome, Janine. 🙂 Sweet photos and look at all those baby steps! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Cyndi and as you know I love looking back at photos of my girls and this one was so much fun!! 🙂
Bill says
It is 7:15 a.m. and somehow I am already behind in a very busy day. How did that happen? LOL
Anyway, I remember clearly my son's first steps and it was very special.
Have a great day, Janine!
Janine Huldie says
Know the feeling about being behind Bill and am kind of there myself. Hope you too have a great day!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Kelly, this actually put a smile on my face and think when you are a mom lots of times you just do everything for your kids that you forget to let them do even the smallest of things for themselves. Trust me and think we are all guilty for us. Loved Dave's comment though and have had similar sarcastic, but funny comments come out of Kevin's mouth, too!!
Camille Griffiths says
Sooo cute! My girls remind me of yours. My first is very energetic and has done all the physical milestones early. My second is much more calm and quiet, content just to sit and play with a toy.
Janine Huldie says
Camille, it is so interesting and funny to watch this as it unfolded, but will say that in the walking department Emma was so quickly, but then Lily was a bit faster with talking so I think it all evened out in the end. But loved that you could relate to this and liked hearing that!! 🙂
CountryBunkinMama says
Looking back it is amazing how fast they grow! My soon to be 8 month old daughter just started pulling herself up on furniture!
Janine Huldie says
I know it really just goes by too quickly!!
AnotherCleanSlate says
Aww what cuties! I bet they have your running around like crazy!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Katie and they truly do, but in a good way (most times!!).
Stephanie Sprenger says
So fun to remember those "firsts!" I loved all the pictures! isn't it funny how different babies are? They are just wired the way they are wired!
Janine Huldie says
I know Stephanie and from watching my two girls very interesting to see how they react with certain situations even. 🙂
erintheirishmama says
Love the pictures Janine!!! I remember that I couldn't wait for Ben to walk but tried putting off Sean. It was a nice easy time when they couldn't in away from me!!!
Janine Huldie says
Oh I hear you Erin. Trust me once they ere both walking, they were into everything and anything (and still are)!! Double trouble for sure!!
Kristi Campbell says
Your girls are so adorable. I remember what a difference it made once my son started walking and running. Whoa, did life change then! No longer could you pop to the kitchen without him or he'd have pulled all the DVD's off the shelf or something. Oh, wait, he did that anyway. 😉
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Kristi that sounded like Lily. Seriously, even before she could walk I had my hands full with her!! 🙂 Thanks!!
Lanaya @ Raising Rea says
Reagan walked at 10 1/2 months and just like Emma … has not stopped! The girls are SO cute! Reagan crawled for about two months before she started walking then she was over it {just like Emma}
Well, of course our kids would be the same too!! LOL .. look at their mommys!

Kera says
What a great post for the First Steps! I absolutely LOVE your photos of Emma and Lily. Emma in that hat and the 4th of July outfit!! So cute 🙂 Sofia started walking a week before she turned one and now she's running and never stops lol!
Janine Huldie says
Kera, I truly can't wait to see what others have to say about this one and it is so funny to think that once our kids learn to walk that is it and they are just off and running. 🙂 🙂
The Dose of Reality says
My son didn't walk until he was 13 months old and my daughter walked just after her 1st birthday. I can't believe you had a walker at TEN MONTHS. Oh, man!! That is young to start your chasing!!! 🙂
Your photos of both of the girls were just so cute!!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much and yes I totally had my hands full and was already almost three months pregnant with my second, lol!! So, I was pregnant and chasing after a 10 month old!! But she was just so happy to be on the go and trust me after colic and teething issues, it was actually just so nice to see her so happy about something!! 🙂
April says
I had a walker at 9, then at 10 months… It's been a crazy household every since!
Janine Huldie says
I know the feeling April and having two under the age of 4 running around like crazy ladies daily can so relate!! 🙂
gigigirl says
What a nice walk through memory lane and wonderful remembrances for the girls to have in the future. And now, they are both ballerinas and runners! This was fun to see. Love, Aunt Gloria
Janine Huldie says
Oh so happy to share Aunt Gloria and truly was so much fun to talk this walk (or run) down memory lane!! Love you too xoxo 🙂
Melanie Chisnall says
Awesome Janine! Truly love these photographs. They capture such curiosity and joy. So, so special! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Melanie and I really love all of them, but my favorite was Emma running in her with that big bow in her hair. She was running with mixing spoons that she used to love playing with as a baby (and would help her to stay focused long enough for me to feed her!!).
Rachel Demas says
It's so interesting how children are so different. It's great that you allow each of your girls to be the individuals that they are!
Janine Huldie says
Oh I totally agree with you on that kids in general are so very different in essence and mine truly are in so many different ways. That said, I truly just try my best here and this one and still learning each day as it comes, Rachel!!

Watching my son take his first steps is a memory etched into my brain. We were lucky enough to catch it on video and watch it often!

Very nice post! My littlest is starting to get around on his own and even though he's the third, it's still super exciting.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Danie and you are right it truly was so very exciting for me both times with my girls!! 🙂
Jelli says
I love these photos that you added to go with the story. Both girls are just so cute! I hope I always remember these baby milestones too. I've got loads of photos just waiting to become scrapbooks, but as the months pass and they pile up more and more, just starting the project gets more daunting. Love how you chronicled it here!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Jelli and it was a long time coming , so believe me I can relate to things just piling up and getting in the way of putting this type of stuff together!!
Dawn says
Hee, isn't it amazing how they go from gingerly cruising to RUNNING! Thanks for sharing with MommyCUBED!
Janine Huldie says
Dawn, it truly is and it seems (at least in my house) to happen like overnight!! And my pleasure as always 🙂
