Here is the thing we love watching movies here. So much so that we have had our fair share of family movie night fun here indoors, as well as outdoors in our backyard in the nicer weather, too.
As a family, we love to watch many family movie classics, as well as newer family movies, as well.
This past summer alone we have enjoyed our fair share of family movie nights.
But with back to school looming, I know family movie nights won’t be as frequent or even last minute for us.
See school nights find us with homework, extracurriculars and so much more.
However weekend nights are perfect for family movie nights.
Still the first month or so back, it usually is pretty warm here.
Plus, there is still a movie or two that my girls would love to see outdoors in our very own backyard.
So what better way to enjoy a weekend back to school night than with an outdoor movie celebration.
Here are a few ways to enjoy a Back to School Weekend Movie Night Picnic…
1. Pick the right movie.
Both my girls had to read over the summer to complete their summer book reports for school. They both read their fair share of fun books. My younger daughter even read the Captain Underpants first book. Which since this is now one of her favorite book series. It even was made into a hit move.
But back when “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” movie opened in theaters, we were on our way to Disney. So, she never got to see this movie in the theater. She has been dying to see it though. We promised her that as soon as it came out on DVD we would get the movie for her to see. Well as luck would have it, The Captain Underpants DVD is will be available in Walmart stores 9/12!
Why?
Because this is a film with a lot of heart.
How?
Well, the film explores the great friendship between Harold and George and their connection through a love of writing and creativity.
And yet this movie is not only an A+ with reviewers, but also contains an outrageous amount of humor with comedic voice talents of Kevin Hart (George), as well as Ed Helms (Underpants and Krupp).
2. Make sure to have outdoor equipment setup and seating for one and all.
To watch a movie outdoors you will need to make sure you have a few of the following:
• Projector/DVD Player
• Outdoor screen
• Sound bar
We got our outdoor movie equipment on Amazon. So I would highly recommend looking there, too.
Also, make sure to not only have enough movie theater seats for all, but also comfortable places to sit. We use Adirondack chairs for adults. The kids will use them, too sometimes. But other times they are happy with a blanket to site on, too.
Thankfully though our kids are pretty easy with this and don’t mind sitting on a blanket or even snuggling in the larger chairs we have with us as the movie plays.
3. Movie picnics are a fun way to enjoy movie treats.
What movie isn’t complete without popcorn? I know both my girls when we plan to watch a movie make sure we have popcorn on hand.
One of our favorite popcorn is Pop Secret 10 ct Movie Theatre Butter Popcorn 32 oz. My girls love their movie style popcorn to have butter on it. Pop Secret doesn’t disappoint with this as it has great butter taste. Seriously, their popcorn is delicious and a high-quality snack that I can feel good about sharing with my family. Plus, Pop Secret just has an unbeatable taste with better ingredients and inventive flavors.
However, this is a picnic. Picnics should also have sandwiches, too. For our family movie night picnic feast, we prefer Lance Cracker sandwiches. Our favorite is Lance Grilled Cheese 11 oz. But why Lance? Because Lance Lance has been making little sandwiches for over 100 years with two awesome crackers on the outside with incredible spreads between. See Lance sandwiches mean more for your family as they are flavorful, wholesome, filling and portable, too. Plus Lances uses real peanut butter or real cheese between crispy baked crackers, up to 5 grams of protein, and no high fructose corn syrup.
Popcorn, sandwich crackers, but what more could we want to munch on?
Well, since we are watching Captain Underpants for our upcoming back to school movie night picnic event we also will be enjoying a marshmallow Captain Underpants themed homemade treat.
The homemade treat that I decided upon to match the Captain Underpants theme are Marshmallow Toilet Bowl Creature Treats.

I need to come to your house for movie night. We don’t have anything that cool at our house, hopefully though by this time next year we will since we’re redoing our backyard. We still haven’t seen the movie but might have to pick it up for our very own movie night.
Janine says
I seriously wish you could and we’d do it up and than some if so! But still hope you can get a movie night in soon in your home backyard and try these yummy treats, too 🙂

I wish I could say I love watching movies but I fell out of love with movies and jumping into binge watching shows on Netflix, no commercials and lots of character development. But I would love to throw a movie night picnic for my family and friends. Classic movies are the best, I’m a My Fair Lady type of Girl 🙂 These toilet bowl marshmallow treats are adorable.
Janine says
I love My Fair Lady, too and other classic movies, too Mary 🙂

This is SO COOL Janine!! My gosh, I want that screen in our backyard!! How much do they run? We don’t have the budget for any big ticket items, so probably can’t do it just yet…
I would love to have it for my teen ministry to watch movies once in a while. Man, you are the funnest parent EVER!
Janine says
Aw, thanks Chris and my husband got his during Black Friday time on Amazon. So I would totally suggest taking a better look than for deals and such if that helps 🙂
