An Alice In Wonderland Themed Birthday Party. Yes, this past weekend, we were invited to a 3 year little girl’s birthday party (one of Lily’s dance classmates) that had this exact theme. Adorable and quite whimsical was the thoughts that came to my mind when I first heard about this and then I saw this invite, which confirmed this to me.
Now, most who read my blog, know I have two little girls and for each of their own birthday parties, we have had many themes over the course of their short little lives.
Awhile back I shared pictures of the cakes, (I will re-share here today for those who missed out the first time) I made with the help of my own wonderful brother, who works at AC Moore. I have been lucky enough to get cake molds and decorating kits from this association with his employee discount. He also has been so generous and wonderful to help with the cake decorating, because these cakes came out fabulous, but would have needed more than two hands for these creations. Thus, thank god for his two hands indeed!
The cake is definitely only a small part of a party, but does help if you are having a certain theme. With little kids, it truly is all about kid’s characters, such as Mickey Mouse.
Up until this year, I did most of the planning by just asking my kids what character they would like and running with it. But now many know that Emma has come into her own and realized that birthdays are for getting presents and if you missed our tale about the birthday fairy, click here.
So, I am sure I have my work cut out for me with Emma, in particular, come this July. I have yet to ask what character yet, but am sure I will be in for it when I do.
Thank god, I still have Lily, who I sincerely hope to god in November will be less of a Ms. BossyPants about this, but something tells that Ms. Go Big or Go Home, will also give me a run for my money on what kind of cake she wants.
And then you have Kevin, who very simply asks, “Why can’t we just have Carvel Ice Cream Cake?”
Oh the joys of birthdays with my gang!!

Sara says
All of your cakes came out great but my fav is the Cinderella cake. I always wanted one of those Barbie cakes. I think I am going to have to make one for my niece.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Sara and the Cinderella cake is truly very easy to make as long as you have the dome kit to make it (pretty much a regular cake and you stick the barbie into!!).
Robin Rue says
Haha – Carvel cakes are the BEST. There are no more Carvel stores around here anymore, but thank god we can still get the cakes at our local supermarkets!! I always go all out on my boys birthday cakes, too -no Carvel here, but then again, my boys birthdays are both in August and we do an outdoor party, so the cake would probably melt.
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Robin. We do have Carvel Stores and in the grocery store, but Emma is also in July and the cake would totally melt. But my husband still loves Carvel and sometimes I think he is a bigger kid about this then the actual kids!! 🙂
Dani Ryan says
Now I know who to call when I need a themed birthday cake. 🙂 These are gorgeous!!!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Dani and you know you can call me anytime cakes or not!! 🙂
erintheirishmama says
Great job on the cakes!!! You did awesome
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Erin!! 🙂
The Next Step says
I love the simplicity of the Hello Kitty cake – plus, less food coloring! 🙂 You are amazing with those cakes my friend – I would totally hire you to make mine!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks Lori and Hello Kitty was a very easy cake, because you are right not a lot of colors. Whereas Abby Cadabby was a real nightmare for all the colors!!!
The Next Step says
you said the Hello Kitty was for Emma at age 2, but there is a number 3 candle burning in the background. 😉
Janine Huldie says
Sorry Lori, I forgot she had the two cakes for her 3rd birthday (we had two family parties) and thought I miscounted, but her first birthday party I was pregnant and had been on bedrest so I couldn't bake. I screwed up here with the labeling. Can you tell I am not getting enough sleep, lol!! 🙂
SarahA says
My that's a lot of work on those cakes-they are wonderful! Mine are more Craftfail material. Ah the Princess castle book cake will go down in history for sure…
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Sarah I think you may be right about that one and I know it is a lot of work and when Kevin says about the Carvel cake I wonder why he has to make it sound just that simple!! 🙂
Cyndi says
That sounds like a fun birthday party theme. I always did like that movie. Hehe.
Janine Huldie says
It truly was and Emma is so into Alice right now, too. We had to buy the DV and everything for her!! 🙂
Michelle Liew says
Ack! You can't please them all! Thanks for sharing, Janine!
Janine Huldie says
Oh so true Michelle and my pleasure as always sharing!! 🙂
Chubby Chatterbox says
I bet all those cakes taste good, but I pick Mickey.
Janine Huldie says
They were pretty tasty, because I use kid's Funfetti Cake and thanks for voting, too!! 🙂
Kat Biggie says
Wow Janine! Good for you!!! I made my son's first Birthday cake, and that was it for me! It took me half the night to do that stupid giraffe! It looked good though! 🙂 I am back from my Spring Break trip to FL with the kids, so I hope to be a little more present this week!!
Janine Huldie says
The giraffe cake sounds awesome and I do hear you on these being a bit time consuming. Glad you are back though and hope you had a wonderful spring break!! 🙂
Bill says
Way out of my area of expertise. Sounds like fun but I'm glad my son is older and I no longer have to do any of this. Those were tough years for a single father.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Bill and do know what a wonderful father then and now, too! 🙂
Lanaya @ Raising Rea says
I like the Cinderella cake. The past two years Reagan has had a monkey on her cake but I'm pretty sure this year will be all kinds of craziness considering Rey loves all kinds of "people" now. I'm going with Sofia or Tinkerbell but that could change in six months, {September is her birthday!}

Janine Huldie says
Oh I would love to see a Sophia cake, Lanaya and wonder if they sell the pan for it. Emma's birthday is in July and you gave me an idea. Could even use the Cinderella mold and put Sophia's head on it!! 🙂 Have to see if I am up for this challenge!! xoxo
Dana says
Those are some cakes! I made cakes for the first 5 birthdays or so for each kid, then I got lazy and started ordering them. Now neither kid wants cake – brownies and ice cream is the preference at our house!
Janine Huldie says
Dana, as you can see ice cream would be the favorite of my own husband, lol!! Thanks!! 🙂
Judy Haughton-James says
Wow! These cakes are so lovely Janine! I can hardly choose. Anyway I voted for Cinderella. Have a good Monday.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Judy and so glad you got to vote, too!! Hope you are having a great Monday, too!! 🙂
ttoombs08 says
I had to cast my vote for Mickey since we're becoming a fan of the mouse in this house. 🙂 Great job on the cakes, Janine! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Terrye and so happy you voted. Lily is Mickey obsessed again now, so I can totally relate!! 🙂
The Dose of Reality says
Super super duper impressed with your mad cake skills! Seriously, amazing job on every single one of them! :)-The Dose Girls
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks Dose Girls and I totally admit to help from my brother, but I am proud of what we created so far for the girls!! 🙂
Christy Birmingham says
The Cinderella one is my fave!!! How fun, with the poll!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Christy and Cinderella still is a huge hit in our house!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Julie. It is the plastic face that goes into it. And I have to be honest it ended up being my least favorite decorating wise, plus the red food color made the icing too sweet. You live and learn!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
I am so trying to enjoy every moment while I can, because Kelly I know there is going to come a day where they are going to be too busy with their friends and such. Thanks again 🙂
Stephanie Sprenger says
I *love* Alice in Wonderland, and would love to go to a party with that theme! How fun! Wow, i am so impressed by your cakes- amazing!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Stephanie and the birthday party this weekend was truly adorable. I have a picture of the actual cake on my 1 Snap a Day, but didn't want to confuse anyone here that I made it 🙂
Leslie says
I adore the Abby cadabby cake. Violet loves her and so do I!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Leslie and Emma just adored Abby and it was one of the first stuffed animals she ever actually got from Kevin. So that cake ended up being a no brainer for her 🙂
stephanie_m_powell says
Love the Abby cake, with Cindarella as close second. You are so much better at making cakes than I am, but I still try again every year 🙂
Emily says
Although I voted for Cinderella, all of those cakes are AMAZING! And I gotta say, I love Carvel ice cream cakes too.:)
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Emily and I do like Carvel, too but can't help, but want to make it a bit more special I suppose, but trust me there will probably come a day when I will just call it a day and go with Carvel!! 🙂
Rosey says
These are awesome, I love the Cinderella cake, but the rest are great too.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so very much Rosey!! 🙂
Roshni Aamom says
I liked the Cinderella cake the most!! But, who knows kids, right?! One of my friend's daughters insisted on Peter Pan and she got a suit to match to wear at the party too!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Roshni and you are so right you never do know what kids want or will like. I have tried once they were old enough to talk to ask my kids to get their input. So that takes away a bit of the unknown and their confusion.
Roxanne Lewis says
They are all amazing! Cinderella got my vote but it wasn't an easy choice. 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Roxanne and happy you voted!! 🙂
Melanie Chisnall says
These cakes are stunning! My favourite was the Cinderella one. It reminded me of one cake my mom made for one of my birthdays one year – also with a barbie. Your girls are lucky to have such a creative mommy (and uncle!) 😉
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Melanie and that is truly awesome that your mom also made you a similar cake to the Cinderella one. It really was so very easy and just like a regular cake except you stick the Barbie (Cinderella) into it 🙂
Camille Griffiths says
These are all awesome. I have to admit, we just get a regular cake!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Camille and trust me if it were up to my husband (as you can clearly see from above) so would we!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Clark for voting and they did take a bit of time, but I loved seeing my girls reactions when they saw their cakes. And we too have had Fudgy the Whale in the past, lol!! 🙂
Kenya Johnson says
I've never attempted to make a theme cake. I bought them. I know one cake was Madagascar themed because Christopher's only request was that his cake have an airplane on it and that one did. This last birthday he paid me the most wonderful compliment. He asked me to make him a carrot cake because my cakes tastes better than the ones I buy. So you know I put a lot of love into that cake. I voted for Cinderella 😉
Janine Huldie says
Oh how sweet and seriously I would have put all the love and then some in that cake, too!! You know it honestly helps that my brother works at AC Moore, because I get so many of the supplies for these cakes on discount and get tons of ideas from that alone, but if he didn't not sure to be honest with you, Kenya.
Dysfunction Juncetio says
Lovin me some Hello Kitty! 🙂 Gosh I wish I could make something like that!
