I still remember shopping with my dad right around Christmas time back when I was a kid at the local TSS (Times Square Store). I seriously couldn’t have been more then 10 years old at the time and CD’s were just becoming the newest way to listen to music. My dad had bought himself a huge stereo system a few months back that had a CD player.
On this day, he was looking for CDs that had some of the best Christmas music known to many of his generation. See he grew up and was a teen in the mid 1960s.
The first CD was by Phil Spector (yes that Phil Spector), but back then Phil Spector was married to Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes fame. This CD was a newer version of the record album my dad owned with all the best of Phil Spector’s artists from back in 1963.
I listened to this whole CD with my dad that year and many years after, but this first year was so special to me, because it was all new to me and yet just loved the music so very much. I tried to picture that time period and my dad as a teen during Christmas of 1963 and just felt so special to share this with my dad.
I had a few favorite songs on this CD. And would love to share them with you here today!
Marshmallow World by the Darlene Love
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers by The Crystals
And my all time favorite:
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love
And of course my dad never just bought one CD at a time and also bought another one of his all time favorites that day and as right as rain also become an all time favorite to me, too. The second CD that still holds a special place in my heart is by the Beach Boys. This was of course The Beach Boys Christmas Album.
Which had four songs on this CD that I could truly listen to over and over at Christmas time still and not get tired of.
These songs are as follows:
Little Saint Nick
The Man with All the Toys
- Santa’s Beard
Merry Christmas Baby
I must admit I hear any one of these Christmas songs above and I am transported back to Christmas time with my parents as a kid. Still have such great memories and recently I added one more to my list of Christmas song loves, but this was more an adult song not that of my childhood.
See, I have a huge love of Michael Buble and his singing abilities. And about 2 years ago, I truly fell in love with his Christmas Album titled aptly, “Christmas”.
My all time favorite song by Michael Buble on this album is his cover of Ave Maria. Not only is it a beautiful Christmas song, but was my grandmother’s favorite church hymn, which she even asked me to have playing at my wedding mass (I totally did for her by the way).
I heard this version originally, thought of her and felt so at peace. So now it is a must on my Christmas music listening each year, too.
So, without further ado, here is Ave Maria and hoping you enjoy my Christmas music picks, which I am also linking up today over with Jen Kehl over at Twisted Mixtape here.
Now that I shared some of my favorite Christmas songs, feel free to tell me some of yours, too!
