He is known by most if not all (in case you don’t watch Comedy Central or are living under a rock) as the HOT POCKET GUY.
Of course, I am talking about Jim Gaffigan, the comedian, who also just happened to write, his own book all about being a dad to not one, but five kids.
Why I am talking about Dad Is Fat or Jim Gaffigan here today?
I promise to get to that in one moment (I swear).
But first, this past summer has flown by me, but will admit I haven’t read nearly as much as I did in the colder winter months. I truly spent a good portion of my time when not blogging or designing outdoors on the weekends and evenings with my family (no regrets there).
But still I did totally miss reading and the other morning, I actually got a few extra moments of quiet while my kids were sleeping and also a break in my morning blog reading (believe it or not).
I headed to my local public library site to reserve a book for my girls (we have been going all summer long and they have been reading all sorts of books), when I saw a tab for reserving e-books with Overdrive Media Console (I probably was living under a bit of rock myself on this).
Ironic that my girls have been doing more reading then me right now, but still I digress.
Believe it or not, I actually used to do read books from the library for free, when I first got my original Nook.
But back then I had to actually first download the book to my computer and then connect my Nook to my computer to transfer the book and the titles weren’t very good either. Long story short, a lot of extra work for not very great or even new books to be read on my Nook.
Fast forward to the other morning. Curiosity killed this cat. I googled about public libraries and e-books.
What I found out made the reader in me oh so very happy.
See, I found out that you simply needed to download the Public Library’s Overdrive app on your mobile device (for me my iPad) and from there you set the app up by either creating a new account or signing in with Facebook, then enter your library card, as well as Adobe Account if you had one.
Once it was all set up, which took me about 10 minutes, I was then able to check out books (fairly new and even bestsellers) immediately. Some might need to be reserved, but still many are available immediately.
I have many on my Goodreads list and to be honest I knew right away which one I wanted to read first and luckily it was available immediately to download – “Dad Is Fat,” by Jim Gaffigan.
I downloaded the book on Thursday and literally devoured the book within less then four days over the weekend late and night and early int he morning, too.
Not going to lie, I love his standup routine and yes he will indeed always be the HOT POCKET GUY to me, but wasn’t sure if his book would be any good.
Let me just go on record to tell you that not only was his book just that good, but I couldn’t stop laughing throughout most of it. I am not a dad, but as a mom and a wife (too), I related on that level.
I don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t read his book, but will share my favorite chapters which were about sleep or the lack thereof when you have kids, such as “My Former Bed,” which yes I am shy 3 kids to his 5 kids, but Jim is right as much as I love my kids, I truly just “Want my bed back”, miss sleep so much and yes “Bedtime is indeed like I am negotiating with two little terrorists” just to get them to sleep for a few measly hours straight.
Needless to say this was just the tip of iceberg for me and as I was reading it, I realized that I would love to see Jim Gaffigan perform live (as I have seen other comedians in the past and he was totally on my wish list). I mentioned this to Kevin and he told me to see if he was indeed touring still.
Lo and behold, I got my wish and he is playing locally to us on October 30th, literally 15 minutes away to promote his new book, Food: A Love Story. Kevin is actually taking off the day after for Halloween and when I mentioned this, he told me that I should just go ahead and buy the tickets.
I didn’t even hesitate and we are going to get to see him, plus get a copy of his new book signed (included in the ticket prices), which comes out the week before we see him.
Definitely so excited and you can trust, I will share more here after the show for sure.

I totally have to read that book! His stand-up special had me CRYING with laughter! When he did the part about the really fit people at the gym, I almost choked on my M&M’s! P.S. That picture of you guys is ADORBS!!-Ashley

Oh no! I live under a rock. I don’t think I know who this guy is (hangs head in shame!). Every time I look into my libraries e-book borrowing thingie I am totally confused and they don’t seem to have the titles I want…especially for the kids. Maybe they have improved it since my last look. Will have to check.
Robin (Masshole Mommy) says
I love Jim Gaffigan! I have seen him do live stand up twice and his stuff never gets old.

Janine,
I too have been living under a rock, but I am so excited for you to get to see Jim Gaffigan LIVE and it is so close to your house. It was just meant for you to go. Thanks for the library tip. We get a lot of audio books for my special needs son Caleb. I normally go to the library and check them out.
Blessings and have a wonderful week,
Diane

Janine, I am excited about so many things here- didn’t know JG had written a book, much less TWO- can’t wait to read ’em! And the whole Overdrive Media Console thing- yes, I definitely live under a rock, so thank you for letting me know about it. My Kindle Fire and I are excited. π
Jennifer | The Deliberate Mom says
Jim Gaffigan is HILARIOUS! He is one of my favourite stand-up comics. I think it’s because his take on parenting is so raw and funny… I just love it.
I discovered overdrive a while ago too. Isn’t it amazing?!
Thanks for sharing! Wishing you a lovely day.
xoxo

Good morning Janine. I don’t think I’ll take advantage of this offer, but it’s good to see you are hard at work this morning promoting as you are so good at. Have a great Monday.

Jim Gaffigan is hilarious! Love this post!
Ginny Marie says
I’ve wondered if that book was any good! I think I’ll have to read it!
I still do the same transfer with my Nook and library books, but now I need to get that app! It sounds so much easier!
April says
I love the concept of Overdrive, but I definitely do the same thing with it as I do regular books. Let it expire. Good thing about Overdrive though is that I don’t get dinged for not returning books in time! π I’ll try to check this one out with my ever growing list of books to read!
Carrie Groneman says
What a cool post you have up today. I fb about the library, and I don’t think I’ve heard much about Jim Gaffigan, but I will check him out now for sure. Thanks for the great info! Carrie, A Mother’s Shadow
NJ @ A Cookie Before Dinner says
I also really like the concept of Overdrive, but I find that I just don’t use it as much as I’d like to. My biggest problem there wasn’t a ton of titles available from my library when I looked a few years ago!
Maybe there is now though, I’ll have to take a look!
Rea says
That’s so incredible that you’ll get to watch him! And even get the book! I feel like I’m lagging behind with my reading too. I’m taking it easy with the book I’m reading now but I want to finish reading it ASAP so I can move on to the next book. LOL. It’s amazing that you have that kind of app by the way. I’m actually looking for a similar app that’s available in our area. π
Kim says
I have definitely been under a rock – I didn’t know who this guy was (although the video was hilarious!!) and I have no idea how to access library books on my Nook. Fun that you have plans to go see him- I’m sure it will be nonstop laughs!
Stephanie @ Life, Unexpectedly says
We’re sharing our bed with Calvin right now, and we truly enjoy him sleeping with us even though we miss cuddling with each other π And if one (or both) of the girls decide to join as well, hubby mostly moves to the couch. I definitely need to check out that book!

I wrote a post about a year ago on OverDrive. Glad it’s catching on. I’ll see if Dad is Fat at my library. I just made another OverDrive discovery because I was primarily doing audio because my phone is too small to read from and I never have possession of my iPad. But I do have a Kindle Paperwhite and you can actually send the library book to the paperwhite. SO excited to be reading and listening to stuff for free. Here’s another OverDrive discovery, you can check out magazines too. Link them to a Zinio account and download that app on the iPad. You never have to return a magazine. There’s some good ones out there too. That’s how I read tech stuff because they have the Mac magazine out there and I would never buy that because it’s like over $10.
Aunt Gloria says
Good to know how easy it is to download books from the library….if I ever decide to do that in the future. And glad you got your wish to see Jim Gaffigan in person. Don’t know him because I don’t watch Comedy Central. A nice way to gently leave summer and move into fall. See you soon. Love & xxxxxooooo
Seana Turner says
I love Overdrive. I use it all the time because my library has so many offerings and I can read them on my iPad… so great for traveling! Jim Gaffigan is really funny. I haven’t read his books, though, so I’ll add this to my list. Who doesn’t need to laugh more??
Kristi Campbell says
I’ve never even heard of him! OMG I love the name “Dad is Fat!” hahaha!!! I am so happy that you and Kevin bought the tickets to go see him and I adore that photo of you! The girls look like twins there (again). LOVE. And congratulations on your new sponsor – you rock this sponsor stuff!
Camille says
I love that guy, he is hilarious. I will have to read the book, it sounds great!
By the way, that is such a beautiful family photo of you guys!!
Tamara says
Oh that is so cool that you’ll get to see him live! And read his new book, I’m sure. I wonder if he’s a heckler? That always scares me a little but it can be very fun too.
And I totally recognize him as the hot pockets guy!
Brittnei says
I can’t believe he came out with a book. That guy is hilarious. From what I’ve seen, he’s one of my favorite comedians because 1) he says things I can relate to which makes me laugh and 2) he seems to say “clean” stuff. Lately, it can be a bother to listen to someone who curses sometimes and a lot because JR is ALWAYS THERE and he listens and repeats as he wants. Hahaha.
Bev says
I need to check out his book. I seem to only be reading serious things lately, I need some more laughter in my life! π Hope you enjoy the show, can’t wait to read about it.
Nellie @ Brooklyn Active Mama says
DUDE! that picture of you and the family is SUPER sweet!! I LOVE it! You should totally frame it. Now Jims book sounds awesome, you know I love your book recommendations!
Dana says
I love borrowing e-books from the library! It’s not as easy to get new books that way, but I always check just in case. I will check out the book – enjoy the show and let us know how it is!
Stephanie says
That is a beautiful photo of your family. Glad you took the time to enjoy your summer – I did the same and it was so necessary and worth it. I just watched the video – it’s hilarious. I’m going to check out the reader, I read every night and spend a lot of money to do so – this could be a great solution. My first book will be his, can’t wait.
Michelle says
I need to check into that library app! I have been reading a ton this month while we’ve been traveling! And I think I have been under a rock too, especially this summer…I haven’t heard of Dad is Fat! Need to check it out. He sounds hilarious!
Pure Grace Farms says
I have been lax at reading this summer as well. Everytime I think I will have a moment to sit down and chill with a book something else comes up. A bit frustrating but I am hoping today might be the day! Glad to see I am not alone.
Blessings,
Shari
Christy Birmingham says
That’s great you will get to see him in person – right on! I also think the title “Dad is Fat” is hilarious and so totally Jim’s style! Great that you found out you can get the books like that through the library and I’m going to see if I can do that same thing! Take care and happy reading π
Amanda @ Growing Up Madison says
This sounds like a book I must read. Just like him I have a little toddler who decides to come in my bed almost every night from her own bed. She’s scared of the dark and almost everything else so we keep her nightlight on for her but around 2am there’s always a knock on the door and then in she walks and gets in the middle. π I want my bed back too!
Pam@over50feeling40 says
Love a good book review! Thanks for sharing on the Thursday blog hop!

Thanks for the book recommendation- I need to find out if my library offers that app although it is disappointing it wouldn’t be compatible with the Kindle!

Jim Gaffigan is hilarious! I was a bit surprised to find out he has five kids, but now I like him even more!
