So, while I am still enjoying the summer time for all it is worth, still beginning to think in terms of the new school year that looms.
While, I previously designated an area for school supplies, papers and even a bulletin board for keeping track of upcoming school/extracurricular events, I still was slacking on one area even during the last school year.
What was I missing from my school organizational setup?
A Homework Station
Why a homework station?
Well, both my girls are now clearly old enough to have homework daily and while having a place for extra school supplies was indeed nice to have, we need a homework station on our dining room table while homework was actually being done.
See, homework seems to be done for the most part at our table. Somehow all sorts of supplies would be used daily, but not put away often enough back where it belonged in the drawers, I had designated for them.
So, I thought ahead for this upcoming year and decided to indeed make a homework station by making sure to everything my girls will need would be in one place on our table, but moved easily still if need be as the wooden crate pallet, I found has carved out handles just for this need.
Here is how to what to include in your own DIY Homework Station (all found on sale at Walmart):
- Wooden Crate and Pallet Box
- Mason Jars
- Pencils
- Post It Notes and Flags
- Paper Clips
- Pens
- Safety Scissors
- Erasers
- Ruler
- Folders for Papers to be kept and/or signed to return
So, in beginning my back to school supply shopping of the products above at my local Walmart, I also was happy to pick up some other much needed supplies for our household with Kimberly Clark paper goods with special edition Kleenex back to school tissues and Scott Toilet Tissues, which all include Box Top for Education labels.
Once we are indeed back to school, I also know our local school will begin their annual collection drive for Box Tops for Education. They collect them from the student population, because it benefits our school by helping to purchase books, computers, playground equipment and so much more supply wise to benefit all.
See Box Tops for education has been helping schools across the nation since 1996.
By the way, right now as luck would have it, Kimberly Clark products, such as Kleenex, Scott and Viva products are available at Walmart for DOUBLE the back to school box top earnings!
So while I was doing my Back to School shopping, I also got a jump start on earning Box Tops, too. See all of these products help parents, myself included to further prepare for that first day of school.

What a cool idea! The piles of stuff all over our table are such a mess–I’m definitely using this! Thanks, Janine!
Janine says
Aw, again so happy you can use and also that I could share with you today!! <3
Kathy Radigan says
Love this!!!!! This year I’m planning on setting up three different boxes for my little dears (not so little anymore) so they can each pull out what they need. Thanks for these great ideas! xo
Janine says
Aw, my pleasure and so glad you are going to do this, as well now!! xoxo <3
Ger says
I’m so trying this, this school year ! it’s tough work keeping a child with ADHD on task but I think this will help — thank you x
Janine says
Thanks again Ger for your shares and also just so happy you are going to try to use this for the upcoming school year, as well now π
Seana Turner says
I like the idea of putting it all in a crate so you can bring it to the kitchen table (where most kids like working), and then quickly sweep it away when it is time to eat. I always taped an envelope onto the inside of a kitchen cabinet to hold the boxtops…works well for bookmarks as well.
Janine says
Love the idea of taping in envelope inside the cabinet for box tops and totally going to do this now myself. Thanks Seana!! π
Kristen says
What a GREAT idea! We may be switching schools and will have homework soon, I love the mason jars too – have LOADS of those!
Janine says
Kristen, so glad you too can use and I loved repurposing mason jars as yes I always have spare ones in my home, too!! π
Dara says
I need a homework station in my house too.
Janine says
Aw, I hear you Dara and definitely must have with kids and homework π
Tamara says
This is so brilliant, and you know I work with Box Tops too! I’ll be writing about them today! I think a homework station is CRUCIAL.
Janine says
I know you do and great minds definitely think alike!!! π
Stephanie D. Lewis says
“To Be Signed labels?” Genius! Loved entire post!
Janine says
Aw, thanks again Stephanie!! π
Jennifer | The Deliberate Mom says
I love the DIY homework station. Clever idea my friend. The crate is perfect for this purpose too!
Back-to-school… I can hardly believe it’s that time of year already.
Thanks for sharing.
xoxo
Janine says
Happy to share and I know cannot believe it is heading to this time yet again!! Thanks again for sharing, too xoxo π
Diane Roark says
Janine,
I love having an organized area where everything is together for homework. Whenever my kids needed something they knew where to find it.
Blessings,
Diane
Janine says
Aw, me too Diane and definitely so just love having it all in one place π
Aunt Gloria says
Great ideas for organizing Janine. That’s my kind of fun! I’ll keep my eye out for the products that have the box top specials and save them for the girls. See you soon. Keep cool! xxoo
Janine says
Aw, thanks Aunt Gloria and see you soon too xoxo π
Jen says
OK this is adorable and so dang handy! I love the size and how it is mobile. Sometimes my kids just bug each other and have to spread the stations out. So this would be perfect! Thanks for sharing π
Janine says
Happy to share and I know makes it easier here, too if it is in one place and not multiple, because my kids would so fight, as well. Thanks also for sharing socially for me, too!! π
Augustus says
This is nice. There is nothing as annoying as having a clumsy desk. It automatically discourage me when I need to do something very important (Like reading or working on an assignment). Learn such skills (organizing stuff) would be very beneficial for your kids when they grow up. And it starts from you showing them how it is done by creating an organized homework station for them.
Thanks for sharing this.
Janine says
Happy to share and thanks Augustus for your input here, too.
Anne Marie @ CCHC says
I always thought the idea of a homework station was silly, until last year! We were constantly hunting for pencils and scissors so this year I made my own and I love it! Hopefully this helps cut down on the delays in compleying homework!
Janine says
Glad you made your own, too and got my fingers crossed on the delays being less for you all, as well!! π
William Holland says
I know I’m late and I’m sorry. Hectic seven days here. Hopefully things will get back to normal tomorrow. Anyway, love your idea here, Janine, and I’ll pass it on to others in my family. Have a superb Wednesday, my friend.
Janine says
Aw, Bill please no worries and just hoping that Bev is indeed on the mend. Still have you, her and your family in my thoughts and prayers, my friend on this Wednesday π
Rabia @TheLiebers says
My kids do 99% of their homework at their after-school program, but we still need a space for them to work at home. Yours is a great idea, especially since we’ll be moving and need something that can easily be transported and ready to go in a new home.
Janine says
Hope you can try this too and also use in your new home, as well Rabia π
Allie says
This has been on our to-do list for a while. I just have to find the right space. It’s hard with four…and ultimately, they end up at the dining room table.
Janine says
I know, Allie even with half and having two they all end up at my dining room table, as well here. So totally get it π
Anita says
What a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing.
Janine says
My pleasure and thank you Anita for your kind comment tonight, too!! π
Bev says
Oh, this is such a smart idea! We have such a small condo, we’ll likely be doing homework on our dining room table when the time comes (which, incidentally, becomes our dumping ground for things when we walk in the house….sigh). I like the idea of keeping all of the supplies in a portable crate.
Janine says
Thanks Bev and I am truly loving the crate idea myself to be quite honest π
Nellie says
This is brilliant and such a great way to get ready for the back to school season!! We need this desperately with a kindergartener and 2nd grader getting ready to get back to homework. Thanks for sharing, I’m gonna get my box this weekend!
Janine says
Thanks so much Nellie and hope you do get your box this upcoming weekend now!! π
Leslie says
What a great homework station! I love that you made it a portable solution. There are so many ‘homework station’ ideas out there that require dedicated space. Those really just aren’t feasible for families with limited space, or who use the dining table for homework (like ours). Putting everything in a simple box with handles is a great way to solve that problem.
Janine says
Thanks Leslie and I loved making it portable, because limited space is a big issues here for us, as well.
Ducks n a Row says
I love work stations! This one has everything π Perfect!
Sinea β₯
Janine says
As hugs and thanks Sinea!! π
Kristi Campbell says
So NOT ready for back-to-school here but we’re lucky that we don’t start until after Labor Day (this year anyway, I guess they voted to start earlier next year which is sad). And YES to Boxtops!!!
Janine says
We also go back after Labor Day this year after going back either last year. Like going back later to be honest and agree about Boxtops π
Melanie Chisnall says
I love this idea! Such great pics and tips π I think having a homework station is so important – it just helps so much having that quiet space for concentration. When we were growing up, my dad made my brother and I desks for our bedrooms – they were great!
Janine says
Love that your dad did something similar for you and your brother, too π
Edye says
What a great DIY! I’m sure kids would enjoy doing homework much more if they had a station like this :]
Janine says
Thanks, Edye and think you are right!! π
Cynthia says
Hey, hey!
Wanted to come by and say hi! Went back to work Aug. 1 and right after having been camping on the beach (and wi-fi challenged) I’ve not been here as much as I’ve wanted.
But I hope you’re having a great August!
And me working in education, lemme tall ya: those homework crates/station have me drooling. I love shiny new supplies! Hehe. And I would do stuff like that as a kid: make my own homework spot with all my pencils, pens, all relevant educational items and marveled at my little “homework station.”
I’m such a nerd. π
But, so fun!
And so glad you shared.
Hope you’re having a great Sunday!
Janine says
You are totally not a nerd or maybe I am, because I love shiny, new supplies, too. Happy Sunday and just made my day seeing you here π <3
Kenya G. Johnson says
I have worked hard to make my office space just mine, so this year Christopher will be doing his homework in the kitchen because I don’t want my space to get out of control again with “stuff”. I agree with your first commenter, keeping it all in a box to take to the kitchen table is a great idea.
Janine says
I know what you mean and I also like my own space, too. That said love that I can move this work station on and off the table, as well. Thanks Kenya also for tweeting, too π
Jessica says
Great idea. I am really big on organization and my oldest is just now starting to have homework. This will come in handy. Thanks for sharing.
Janine says
So happy to share and glad you can use with your oldest now, Jessica π
