Welcome back to Finish The Sentence Friday Blog Hop (FTSF). We give you a sentence and you finish it (however long or short you’d like). Please feel free to link up and follow any or all of our hostesses, which are below.
And now for this week’s sentence to finish: “I tried to cook…”
Next week’s sentence to finish: ”I did something really stupid once, I…”
I tried to cook many things in my years. I love to cook and bake. I don’t know where I actually got this talent from, because my mom would tell you she hates to cook and will barely try.
When I said I needed to finish this sentence, her first response was a story I have heard over and over from when she and my dad first married. Apparently, she was trying to re-heat my grandmother’s meatloaf (this was cooked and sent home with them to have as meal) after a long day of work. She threw the whole thing in the oven and when she checked something was definitely amiss. It seems she forgot to take to Saran Wrap off of it before putting in the oven and turned it into a shrinky dink!! For those not old enough to know what a shrinky dink actually is. See the picture to the right, because I may be dating myself for some on that comparison.
The burn Looked Very Similar on My Pinky–Ouch!!However, my mom reminded me of two times that I actually did have mishaps in my kitchen after sharing the above story again. The first happened months after we first got married and were living in our one bedroom apartment. The kitchen was definitely on the smaller side. The stove literally was almost right on top of the adjacent wall. And behind the stove, as well as the sides of the stove next to the burners, was a stainless steel metal backsplash panel. I was cooking a pasta dish for us and stirring the pan, when somehow I had forgotten to wear my oven mitt and hit my pinkie into the stainless backsplash on that side wall. Let’s just say I think I had at least 2nd degree burns on my little pinky, because the skin blistered and then just rubbed right off. It was so very painful and took weeks to heal properly. Every time I had to get near water, whether to wash dishes or shower, I just wanted to cry for how badly it hurt. I truly hope to never do that again.
The other mishap I had when cooking would be when I was making peppers and onions for Chicken Fajitas. I have made this meal millions of times now and never had a problem, but one time in particular, I had a major issue and not even sure how I did this, but I had the olive oil in my covered skillet heating. When I went to take the cover off to add the sliced onions, there it was. My skillet was on fire. I am not joking when I say the flames bolted up and I jumped about 10 feet back. All my good senses and judgement went out the window and seriously had no clue what to do. Thank god Kevin was home and he took action immediately putting the fire out with our fire extinguisher. But unfortunately I had ruined a perfectly good skillet. Yet, thankfully I still had most of the ingredients for the actual fajita dinner to start over, but had to finish in my frying pan.
So, I may just have gotten something from mom after all and that is my penchant to be a bit clumsy and create kitchen catastrophes judging from the two experiences I described!!
Now tell me, in the comments, about times when you tried to cook (you’re in good company as you can see from above). Or write a post and link it up! And be sure to share my story with all your FB and Twitter friends. We’ll also be featuring some of our favorites on Twitter with the Hashtag #FTSF and our Facebook pages too, so make sure to follow. Don’t forget to grab a button and put it somewhere people will see. We’d are hoping to keep this hop going strong and continue this for a long time to come!

Bill says
I tried to cook???? I say that every single night it's my turn to make dinner. Hi, Bev, I'm sorry honey, but I tried to cook……. LOL Have a great weekend Janine!
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Bill. At least you try and give you total props for that!! Have a great weekend, too π
Janine Huldie says
Rich, yet another thing I have in common with Millie. Thankfully mine was put out before it caused anymore damage that just to my skillet, but I swear it scared me good and I never heat oil with the lid to the pan on anymore just in case. Thanks for sharing Rich and you are right I was actually pretty lucky when it boils down to it.
Janine Huldie says
Oh sorry Melanie that you too burned yourself. After that experience I made sure t always have oven mitts handy though. Have a great weekend, too!! π
Janine Huldie says
Seriously, good thing you didn't Clark. But at least I know I am in good company with burning things, lol!! π
Emily Cappo says
Well, despite your cooking mishaps you still sound like you can pull off some delicious meals (unlike me)! And yes, I remember shrinky dinks – funny story!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Emily. I do try, but believe me these stories will be with me for a lifetime, just like my mom's shrinky dinks, lol!! π
Kenya Johnson says
Ouch to that burn! I can imagine. I've burn myself a lot but not the that "2nd" degree, I know what you mean about "all good senses going out of the door". I try to blow out a stovetop fire. I was in the 7th grade, but I still knew better than to blow it. I'm shaking my head now. God was looking out for me. It started from grease, and could have been much worse. But it burned itself out before the fire department got there and all the damage was just cleaning the black stuff off the walls.
Janine Huldie says
Oh man thank god seriously Kenya and will say someone was looking out for both of us it sounds like. Seriously though, I too still shake my head at my lack of reflexes/common sense on that one!!
Stephanie Sprenger says
Oh, I am terrible in a crisis and would have totally panicked if I saw flames! Ha! Nice one with the Shrinky Dinks reference- π Ah, the 80s…
Janine Huldie says
I loved the Shrinky Dink reference and so glad I am not the only one who remembers them, lol!! As for the crisis, I am with you and was no help whatsoever!!
Janine Huldie says
Oh the smoke detector is the worst. Kevin made the house all smoky the other day from grilling chicken in the grilling pan. Oddly enough the smoke detector never came on and my dad right away says, "I think the batteries might need to be changed!!" Good way to find out, lol!! π
Dana says
Oh, I remember Shrinky Dinks! They still sell them – I bought them for my kids at Michaels and they loved them! Glad your cooking mishaps caused no more harm than a burnt pinky π
Janine Huldie says
Dana, I totally had no idea that they still sold them. My brother works at AC Moore and now have to ask him. And as for my mishaps, glad now too that they weren't worse than they could have been!! π
Angel Shrout says
OK for future reference baking soda will put out a grease fire.. ya know so you can salvage the pan. Ouch on the burn. I had a gf who forgot to take the plastic bag of innards out of her Turkey once. Yeah I didn't let her live that down.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Angel and I did know that, but man did all my senses go out the window during that. And yes the burn I still feel the pain just talking about it. And the Turkey story seriously, thanks for just sharing that with me π
Janine Huldie says
Sorry you too have done both these things Kate, but kind of happy to know it isn't just me. Definitely like that I am in good company with you!! π
Kat Biggie says
I totally laughed out loud with the image of the shrinky dinks! I loved those things. I saw them recenlty in a store! Would not want to shrinky dink my food though. Cooking burns are the worst!!!
Janine Huldie says
I know Alexa and believe me my mom still laughs now when she talk about that one. Still can't believe Shrinky Dinks are still available and am so going to have to look into that. And omg cooking burns are the worst!!
Kerri Ames says
Sadly, I am old enough to not only remember Dr. T but shrinky dinks. And I suffer the fool who makes fun of my age π
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Kerri and I too pity the fool who makes fun of my age, too!! It looks like I am in good company with you too remembering these and Mr. T, too!! π
Janine Huldie says
You did and I love it!! Oh take care of that cooking burn and as you know I know all too well how painful they can truly be!!
Ruchira says
wow, Janine all I can say is Ouch!
I so forgot about this today got inspired by woman's day. Let me go and write something and link up.
Voted for ya π TGIF
Janine Huldie says
Oh no problem Ruchira and I totally understand things come up, but thanks for still wanting to link up with us π
Chris HyeThymeCafe says
That's so strange, that's the second comment in today's batch that involves a fire starting when heating a covered pan. Honestly, I have never heard of anyone heating a pan covered. Good thing it worked out OK! Your burn story reminded me of something I did when I was a kid … I made a big pot of pasta and when I went to pour it out in the sink, I made the mistake of pouring toward me. The boiling water splashed all down my front. It was summer, and I was wearing a tee-shirt dress at the time. Everywhere there was a wrinkle in the dress from the way I was leaning, I had burns. I never did that again!!! Fortunately no permanent scars. Hope yours healed OK!! π
Janine Huldie says
Oh wow Chris that sounded awful and so painful and happy to hear that you didn't scar, but still sorry you had to go through that. As for the fire, I know I even commented on the other post and was shocked to see I wasn't the only one to do this. By the way, my burn healed just fine, but hurt terribly for about two before I did.
Lanaya @ Raising Rea says
Cooking is not a favorite of mine ~ I'd rather bake π

Janine Huldie says
I do like to cook, but I am with you that I would still choose baking over it any day of the week!! xoxo π
Janine Huldie says
Julie, you totally had an awesome day and was so happy for you!! As for the burn, it was truly cringe worthy and sorry that I did make your skin crawl, but it truly was the first thing that came to mind!!
Lisa Newlin says
This is why the good Lord invented carry out! No burned hands and your kitchen stays scorch-free!
Janine Huldie says
Oh so true Lisa and I live for take-out whenever possible!! π
Kristi Campbell says
Shrinky Dings were AWESOME! OMG, I loved, loved, loved those things. So much. In fact, I'll be I still have some because I loved them that much. Ouch to your finger! And weird that the pan just caught on fire. Sounds like you are actually an amazing cook though, if those are your only mishaps!
Janine Huldie says
I too loved Shrinky Dinks Kristi and remember having a ton as a kid, too. I asked my brother, who works at AC Moore, before and said yes the sell them there. So, I am totally going to have to try to get some now!! And thanks for the compliment, but trust me I just do what I have to in the kitchen department π
More Than Mommies says
I have so many burns on my hands and arms because I love to reach into the hot oven without completely opening the oven door or sliding the oven racks out. I always curse myself when I do it and my arms look horrible! I'm gonna finish the sentence with "my HUSBAND tried to cook…chicken wings and started a grease fire that he promptly put out with a fire extinguished that THANKFULLY we had JUST purchased that week.' Close call! Thanks for linking up at the MTMmixer this week!
Janine Huldie says
Great way to finish the sentence and seriously that fire extinguisher sure came in handy. Oh and I give you credit, because I am too much of a baby and wouldn't go near the oven with out my oven mitts!! Thank you for stopping by and finishing our sentence and totally my pleasure to link up with you ladies, too!! π
Dawn says
Oh man. Burns hurt SOOOOOO bad! I think I wrote about my incident not too long ago. It was 2 years ago. I still have a scar. It's huge, but light now.
Janine Huldie says
Ouch to you too Dawn and sorry that happened to you. I do vaguely remember reading your story and thankfully for me though as painful as my burn was it didn't leave much of a scar.
Joyce says
I hate burning myself in the kitchen. I've done it a few times but nothing too serious, Thank God.

Michelle Liew says
I think my stupidest action was….oh, there are so many, I can't list them! Thanks for sharing, Janine!
Janine Huldie says
Lol, Michelle. So true, so true!! Thanks π
Janine Huldie says
Oh Joyce, glad to know it isn't just me!!
Janine Huldie says
Dawn, I totally do remember that and sounds like I am a good company!!
