Not a day goes by that either of my girls don’t come home from school famished. Also, they always are looking to snack the day away. I mean after the long elementary school days that they endure, I truly cannot blame them. Plus, the 6 hours plus they spend there learning, this definitely helps to boost their after school appetite.
At one point this past year, my oldest was actually buying cookies at lunch. Then, she was sneaking leftovers home for an after school snack in her lunch bag. But I would rather not be footing the bill on her school lunch money account for after school snacks daily. Plus, I wanted a better after school snack alternative than cookies. Therefore, I have gotten better with new options for after school snacks here for my kids.
5 Ways to Help with New and Better After School Snack Options…
1. Plan ahead.
On the weekend, we usually do the week’s bulk grocery shopping. So, I make sure to include ingredients for after school snacks for the upcoming week during this trip. This helps me be more prepared for after school snacks for the week.
2. Give options to your kids.
My kids could eat the same after school snack every day if I let them. But still they would get bored of this pretty quickly at the same time. So, I try to have some go to ideas for snacks. Yet also allow for choices as to what they may be in the mood for. This is especially the case with seasonally appropriate fruits and veggies that are more abundant during certain times of the year. Like in the late winter, cuties or tangerines they enjoy feasting on. Still warmer weather, it is melons, berries and more. While fall finds apples and pumpkins more in season.
3. Try not to buy junk.
Sadly, I have a picky eater in my home with my younger daughter. However, I fight the good fight to try to offer her healthier food alternatives with fruits and veggies. Plus I don’t buy junk food if I can help it or have it readily available in our home. This includes those over processed juice boxes that she would devour if I let her. Therefore, it is lots of water and fresh fruit smoothies whenever possible.
4. Just let them be kids.
Still though, I know they are kids. Plus, once again the days are long for them being at school for hours on end. So, I usually try to get an after school snack. This allows them a bit of down time before we do tackle homework and more. It is just so important to remember that they are indeed just kids. Plus, this bit of unwinding is so very necessary to help relax them before having to do homework.
5. Be willing to try new recipes.
This goes hand in hand with options and #2, but again I am always on the lookout for new recipes that I can modify for my girls. These recipes also suit their food preferences. Plus, they keep it fresh and new with their after school snack options.

No matter what time of the year, we always enjoy a good smoothie here. Also, I have tried many smoothie recipes over the years. Plus, I love to add a few new ones, as well. See we are a long time family that loves a good smoothie. Even before I had the girls, both my husband and I would constantly try new smoothie recipes. See we were gifted a smoothie maker, which actually broke pretty early on.
But I ended up purchasing an Oster® Blend-N-Go® MyBlend® Blender. See this blender you can just fill, blend & go. Plus, it has stood up to the smoothie making occasion time and again in our home.
Also, both my girls absolutely also love chocolate, JIF peanut powder flavor (what kid doesn’t), as well as Dannon Oikos Triple Zero Greek Nonfat Yogurt. They also love raspberries, too, where luckily I find all at my local Walmart. Plus, Jif Peanut Powder is great for smoothies, baking and more with 85% less fat than traditional peanut butter and the regular peanut powder has NO sugar added and is yet not a low calorie food. On top of this, Oikos Greek Yogurt is quite possibly the perfect protein snack™. But unlike some other protein snacks, it has 0 fat and 0 artificial sweetners – plus 15g of protein per 5.3oz serving size. Now, I thought I would share a newer smoothie snack recipe. See I recently tried this for a new after school snack for them below:

I looked at this protein powder in the store just yesterday and wondered what I could use it for. I love this healthy smoothie recipe. It is truly the perfect snack. I normally purchase Dannon Greek yogurt. I will have to pick up some peanut butter powder and try this smoothie.

Such useful tips and the recipe is awesome! We just bought that blend and go for smoothies recently, and it’s been such a help. I use it to blend shakes after my workout and even when my daughter needs a quick snack after her nap. So glad you shared this with us on #shinebloghop this week. Have a good one, Janine!
Janine says
Thanks Maria and truly so happy I was able to share with you at the #shinebloghop this week, too!! 🙂

My girls like smoothies and shakes for breakfast. You could do much worse, and they get more nutrition than many other options. On a side note, the idea that peanut powder exists scares the heck out of me, as the father of a peanut-allergy kid.
Janine says
I agree about the smoothies, but admit I wouldn’t have connected peanut powder with peanut allergies at least not in my home as my kids aren’t allergic, but can indeed see your trepidation for your own child.
Marilyn Lesniak says

I just got home from work and immediately visited you because, well, you are a friend but also because I saw the word “smoothie” in the title. Smoothies are our go-to drink in the summer. With all the berries we grow, it’s a “natural.” Pun intended. Thanks for the recipe, Janine. Have a great Friday!
Janine says
Aw, thanks always Bill and hoping you had a great day at work and wishing you too a Happy Friday, too!! 😉
Chris Carter says

Just let them be kids. YES. I can’t do this one as Tucker has nut and peanut allergies but I can modify it and thank you!!! LOVE SOME SMOOTHES!!

Aw, so happy you can amend for Tucker and letting them just be kids is tops on my list always 😉

Yum! I should start making smoothies for my son when he gets home from practice – he’s always starving! This way I can get him to eat some fruit and plenty of protein too.
Tamara says
Oh boy – this looks DELICIOUS. I’m going through the starving hour right now. After school and until dinner, is NUTS for my kids.
Ok, and me.
Janine says
Aw, you and me both. Probably why we really are just twins!! 😉
Rosey says
Hurrah for the peanut powder!! And Oikos is my most favorite yogurt ever, I love it! We make smoothies here. It really is a good way to get the kids to eat healthy and like it (or drink healthy…you know what I mean). 🙂
Janine says
I know love Oikos too and couldn’t agree more about smoothies and kids, too 😉
Jen says
Oh my goodness this is like the perfect pairing! Yum! I am so going to try this one out. I have been wanting to buy the JIF powder for a long time. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Janine says
My pleasure and hope you can try JIF Peanut Powder now soon, too!! 🙂
Debbie says
Hi Janine, when the children were younger I used to prepare them each a fruit box every day, to encourage them to snack more healthily and to help them get their five a day. Unfortunately they’ve out grown their fruit box days, however they do enjoy homemade smoothies.
Your raspberry and chocolate smoothie sounds rather tasty. I’ll be seeing if I can get peanut powder next time I’m in town.
xx
Janine says
I hope you can get peanut powder to try soon for your kids, too now Debbie 😉
Janine says
Thanks Debbie and I totally agree about smoothies. Hope you can get some peanut powder definitely soon to try this smoothie, too 🙂
Jessica @ Absurd She Wrote says
My daughter is only a year and half but she likes all these ingredients you listed – raspberries, yogurt, peanut butter. She’s been coming down with a cold and I appreciate the reminder that if she’s not eating, I can always try to get some food in her with a smoothie 🙂
Janine says
Jessica, totally remember those days so well and agree smoothies are the best bet of getting little ones to eat and consume some food at any rate 🙂
Nellie says
That smoothie sounds absolutely delish!! It seems like the boys just snack and snack until bedtime, they simply can’t be satisfied! but your tip about letting kids be kids is great because sometimes that is all you can do.
Janine says
Nellie, my girls are the same as your boys and love to snack from after school pretty much through after dinner. And because of that and more I have learned to just let it go and let them indeed be kids 🙂
Rea says
Ahhhh so yummy smoothie!! I’d devour a smoothie anytime. Reiko doesn’t quite understand its taste though and yes, he’s also a picky eater. Very challenging to choose healthy food for him.
Janine says
Rdiko and Lily would get along famously as she too is still very much a picky eater here!
Carrie Groneman says
