How to Transform Your Loft into a Guest Room

Filed Under: home decorating, home improvement Tagged With: Home Improvement

Loft conversions have become a very popular solution for people who want to create more space without having to move. But is it a straightforward job converting a loft or is it not worth the cost and effort? Of course, first you’ll need to make sure that you can legally convert your loft by contacting the local council. But just because you can does that mean you should? We think so.

If you’re looking for a way to increase the value of your home, we think converting your loft into a guest room is a great option. Not only does it add an extra bedroom to your home, but it can also be a cosy and unique space for your guests. But it’s a job that requires a decent amount of planning.

With that in mind, here’s our step-by-step guide to converting your loft.

How to Transform Your Loft into a Guest Room Tips

Assess the Space

Before you begin converting your loft, it’s important to assess the space to ensure that it is suitable for a guest room. Check the ceiling height to make sure it’s high enough, and consider whether you will need to add windows or skylights to bring in natural light. You should also check for any structural issues or dampness, which will need to be addressed before you start any building work.

Plan the Layout

Once you’ve assessed the space, it’s time to plan the layout. Consider the size of the room and the furniture you want to include. A double or queen-sized bed, a bedside table, and a wardrobe are essentials. If you have space, you could also add a desk or a sofa bed for extra flexibility.

Add Insulation

Insulating your loft is crucial if you want it to be a comfortable space for your guests. This will help regulate the temperature and prevent any noise from outside. The most common type of insulation used in loft conversions is spray foam, which is quick to install and very effective.

Install a Staircase and Walls

If your loft doesn’t already have a staircase, you’ll need to install one. This is a big job that requires professional help, but it’s essential for safety and accessibility. You’ll also need to build walls to enclose the space. This is another job that requires professional help, as you’ll need to ensure the walls are structurally sound and meet building regulations.

Install Electrics and Plumbing

Once the walls are in place, you can start installing electricity and plumbing in your loft. This includes adding light fittings, power outlets, and radiators. If you’re adding an en-suite bathroom, you’ll need to install plumbing for the sink, toilet, and shower.

Decorate the Room

With the building work done, it’s time to decorate the room. Choose a color scheme that’s welcoming and relaxing, and add soft furnishings like curtains, rugs, and cushions to make the space cozy. You could also add artwork and plants to bring the room to life. Remember that you’ll also require storage. If you have a sloped ceiling, for example, you might want to look for a fitted wardrobe that will make the most out of the space available.

Add Finishing Touches

Finally, add the finishing touches to make the guest room feel like a home away from home. This could include a welcome pack with information about the local area, fresh towels and bedding, and toiletries like soap and shampoo.
