Soil
As we said earlier, blueberries can be grown anywhere but you have to keep some things in consideration. First, these kinds of plants flourish in loose, acidic and well-drained soil. Ideal soil pH would be 4.5 and 5.5., which is quite low. If the pH is higher than these, you can always transform the soil.
Combine 1:1 mix of soil and coconut coir and add some acid-friendly fertilizer or 3% organic matter and that’s it! Although, you can also buy a pre-mixed soil with fertilizer from your local store. Do not plant blueberries too deep and plant it just below the surface. Learn more about growing blueberries when you visit Gardener’s Path.
Drainage
Pick a pot that is 17-18 inches in depth at least and 20 width because it will only need as much for its shallow roots. Blueberry plants hate having “wet feet” or wet, soggy soil so it needs good drainage too.
For ground drainage, test it by digging 12×12 depth and width. Fill with drain and check its drainage. Check how long it drains. If the water drains 2-inch per hour, it could be a sign of a well-draining ground.
Sun & Water
Standing water can rot a blueberry plant, so make sure to have proper drainage. While many believe that it will be hard to manage a blueberry plant that is not really the case. In its first 2 years, you will have to give 1 to inches of water per week.
During seasons with rainfall, you can be sure of a productive plant. You will need to soak them though during dry seasons. Plant them in an area where they will get full but not direct sunlight. They will need ½ of the daylight hours at the very least.
Harvest Time
After 2 years or less, you may start noticing those plump and juicy produce – the blueberries. Typically, harvest time is around June and August. However, it is best to let the fruits be. Do not pick it right after it turns purple or blue.
Wait for a few more days. You will get best results when you see they are ready. After the picking time you can properly store blueberries by freezing them or having them in cold storage so that you can enjoy them for a longer period of time.
