And now for this week’s sentence to finish:  ““One of my favorite childhood memories is…”

Next week’s sentence to finish: “This holiday season I will…”

One of my favorite childhood memories is…

I admit I remember a lot from when I a small child like both my girls ages.

One of my fondest memories from this time was when I was just about 3 years old.

My parents had won a cruise to Mexico via the Love Boat.

My dad worked for General Motors and this was truly an awesome win for him.

But again it was the Love Boat and definitely an adult vacation.

So, I was to stay home. My grandparents (my mom’s parents) were going to watch me.

Me with My Grandparents Back in the Day

Me with My Grandparents Back in the Day

And they did just that for a whole week.

During this week, I remember sharing my grandparents large bed with my grandmother at night and during the day, I had my grandmother’s full attention.

She baked with me everything you could imagine during those days including her famous corn bread that included real pieces of corn. I seriously can still taste it, because it was that good.

And my grandfather in the evenings when he would get home from work also showered me with his attention, including teaching me how to dance. My feet never touched the ground, because he totally let me step all over his feet. He also helped me brush my teeth. This was how I found out that my grandfather still didn’t have all his own teeth. See my grandfather was a tease and in his own fashion and brand of humor kind of pulled his partials out forgetting I was there. When I realized and questioned him, he told me that “everyone could take their teeth out”.

I was definitely perplexed and stood there in front of the mirror trying to take my teeth out.

My grandmother passed by and asked what I was trying to do.

I told her what my grandfather said. I vaguely remember her yelling and asking him why he would say that to me.

He just laughed his famous laugh (really he had a one of a kind, infectious type of laugh-still miss it until this day!).

I truly will always remember this and how much fun it was to be with them during this time.

Sometimes, I wish I could just rewind time and relive a few of the funnier, happier moments.

Both my grandparents are indeed long gone, but truly not forgotten.  And this is one of so many wonderful memories I have of them and still do cherish that I have.

Now that I have shared my favorite childhood memory here, please share yours with me now!

I truly loved both my grandparent and just so happy when I can share about them on my blog, because they really were the best grandparents and were always there for me growing up! And I love that you have a similar memory with the teeth with you own grandfather!! 🙂

So lovely. I too wish that I had a rewind button. That would be beyond brilliant. I remember when my Grandad got a whole new set of chompers and I was terrified. He came to babysit that night and I wanted to hide in the closet. Or under my bed. Or outside. He looked like the John Cleese character in the movie Rat Race. Huge mouthful of teeth. It delayed my mom and dad's departure quite a bit I think.

But still he had me cracking up over this one then and for years to come. And yes I would love a rewind button many days now!

This is lovely – as a parent, I mostly love that your parents got a week to themselves. We did that when our eldest was about one and a half (left her with close family friends) and had a bit of angst about doing so – but she was just fine and the vacation was wonderful! As for your experiences with your grandparents – how lovely that you both have and remember that! What a gift.

That's a beautiful story! Kids need that in their lives. I was on a missionary ship for two years from '93 – '95 and when we were in the Ukraine, we were docked alongside the Love Boat. That's it's TV name, but it's real names is The Princess Cruise. I got a deck of cards from them as a souvenir with both names on it.

This was such a sweet post Janine. I love the connection you had with your grandparents. That is very special. It made me remember all of the wonderful times I had with my grandparents growing up, too. My mom's parents lived next door to us and my sister and I were constantly over there. I would sleep over, my Grandpa would take me out for breakfast and to the local playgrounds, and my Grandma would ride with my mom and me doing errands almost every day. They both passed away a few years ago now and I would love to be able to see them again. Some day we both will though, right? I sometimes have dreams that my Grandma is still alive and so it makes me think that she's watching over me and the girls. Happy Friday to you now and happy weekend 🙂 xoxo

Kera, I love that you too had such a special connection with your grandparents. Mine lived a few blocks away when I was a kid and then around the corner (they lived in apartments back then) and then finally when I was a teen they moved in to share the mother-daughter house that they bought with my parents. I live in their part of the house now and still feel many days that they are close by and watching over me and my girls. And I truly hope you are right that someday we will both see them all again. Happy Friday to you too and we made it to the weekend (have a great one!)! Kevin is home and we may take the girls to see Frozen later on 🙂

I have so many nice memories of my father's parents. They had a laundry chute in the bathroom that went into the basement and you could talk through it like a tunnel if someone was in the bathroom and someone down in the basement. And we used to have ice cream sundaes and watch classic TV shows on the kitchen TV. A TV in the kitchen! It was novel to me.

Was so weird when I was a kid with this, but the way my grandfather shared this definitely lessened the weirdness, because as I got older I still remembered this and couldn't but laugh instead of finding it weird or creepy (if that makes sense). And as Lily is growing, I so see more of myself in her, too. Very strange, but definitely know she is mine 🙂

I love that picture every time I see it. I definitely miss my grandmother {on my moms side} and my grandfather {on my dads side} They both passed way too soon and I'm sad that I can't be with them anymore. I would have loved for Reagan to know them both, They kicked ass,

I so would have loved for both my girls to know my grandparents, but unfortunately Emma was only 5 months old, when my grandmother passed away and my grandfather was long gone by that point. By the way, that still is my favorite photo I have of me with them growing up!! 🙂

I got a giggle about you trying to take your teeth out….Dom was a great tease and had a good sense of humor. I remember that trip…..you cam to Pop's house and "Love Boat" was on TV. Aunt Lucy would say she just saw your parents on the Love Boat and of course, they were gone by the time you turned your head! She loved to tease you too. We were so lucky to have family so close as we grew up. Good memories. Love you…….

Aunt Gloria, I was so toying with the notion of including about Aunt Lucy, because it still such a fond memory too from that time, but was trying to keep it on the shorter side with this post. But still I do so remember that and still makes me smile and laugh every time I do recall it!! Great memories indeed and love you, too! 🙂 xoxo!!

I LOVE that memory SO cute! I can't believe you remember all the way back to when you are three! Isn't it so funny that we totally believe everything that adults say when we are that young? Children are totally not built to be skeptics. I love that you tried to figure out this magic teeth pulling. so cute 🙂

You are so right Nellie about children not being built to be skeptics and see it everyday right now in both my girls. I know there is going to come a time when that does change, but for now I want to enjoy every minute of this with them that I can!! 🙂
