How do you cap off a long holiday weekend with the family? Why you go to Hick’s Nursery in Westbury, NY to see Otto the Ghost’s Free Animated Story complete with witches, goblins, ghosts and Jack o’Lanterns too (oh my!!).
So this past weekend, Kevin used some vacation time and was indeed home from Friday through today. We have been on the move for most if it, including going to the Rise of the Jack o’Lanterns at Old Westbury Garden on Sunday night (in case you missed this one).
Every year though on Columbus Day, my husband and I have gone to Hicks Nursery Fall Festival for this annual happening even before we had our kids. In the beginning I went with my husband, his parents, and our niece and nephew too (they were right around the age that my girls are now the very first time we went). Each year more family members somehow got added and this year all the grandkids were there in grand fashion.
We arrived right around 10:30 am and started our way into Hicks. The kids of course were so excited; they didn’t have enough Halloween fun last night with all the pumpkins. So we got on line to go through Otto’s The Ghost’s Free Animated Story.
For those not familiar with this year’s story, it starts off with Otto having a bit of an issue with crows that won’t leave and overtaking his home. The story continues with Otto worrying about his pumpkins getting eaten by these crows and thinking his good friend the witch would help. The witch decides to cast a spell and use magic dust to scare off the crows. But the witch had also problems flying (her broom is malfunctioning) and Otto helps her with this problem. In the end, teamwork prevailed and the party with the Jack o’Lanterns was a success and went off without a hitch.
Really clever story, awesome puppetry work/scenery and nice lesson here for the kids make for a happy outing yet again. Sorry for another Halloween post so soon and hope I am not being redundant, but truly love this time of year (I am a big kid at heart at Halloween and Christmas time too).
Of course, Otto’s Story is only part of the Fall Festival. Hicks also has an outdoor venue complete with Hayrides too, but they were truly so crowded today from the holiday that we were actually unable to get to do the hayride, but hopefully can save that bit for another day before Halloween is actually upon us. The store itself is set up as I said for Halloween, but Christmas too, complete with trees and decorations galore. The kids also quite enjoyed this as well (especially Santa and the lights too).
By the end of this little day trip, the kids truly did have a blast and ended up with their very own pumpkin to have daddy make their very own Cinderella Jack o’Lantern. So stay tuned for that adventures and pictures too!! And of course please enjoy this youtube video below of Hick Nursery and Otto now.

Bill, I can't say thank you enough for saying such lovely things about us as parents. We really (both my husband and I) love these two kids like nothing else, but that said you know all my mistakes and then some. I truly can admit I am so not perfect and very much do hope that both my girls even for all my flaws will look back on their childhood and remember it and us for all the good we did try to impart on them.

Thanks Julie. it truly was and do hope to go back before Halloween for the Haunted Hayride too that we were able to do because of the crowds.

Aw my kids are getting to the age where they (think they) are too big for this stuff:) I loved going to events like that!

Kelly, I don't look forward to when they begin to grow up and not want to spend time with us. Having worked with middle school kids teaching in the past, I know it is bound to happen though and truly trying to enjoy every moment I can at this point. Thanks 🙂 🙂
