Yesterday was September 1st and I admit I so not happy about it. As soon as I realized it was indeed September, I kept hearing, Green Day’s, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” playing in my head.
Got to admit I am a summertime girl any day of the week and even said this out loud to both Emma and Lily this past weekend. Emma agreed and told me that she loved Summer just like Olaf (yup Frozen still lives on here) plus her birthday is in the summer.
Lily was not as amused or happy about my admission and turned to me asking puzzled, “But you don’t like fall? That’s the season my birthday is in.”
Lower then low, I felt in that moment and reassured her, I loved fall for it’s own reasons, but especially because her birthday does indeed occur during this season. I also shared that the day she was born was indeed one of the best days of my life and definitely a reason to celebrate.
Yet, deep down, I am sad to see summer end and definitely a little deflated that school is starting back up (don’t rat me out with Lily).
As most know, Emma indeed starts kindergarten tomorrow (Wednesday). A whole new adventure for her, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I am still nervous and weepy just thinking about it and have been now for days on the verge of tears thinking about how she is growing up and a new chapter is to begin for her.
But in the end, I guess all good things (such as summer have to come to an end), so we can begin anew (like Emma and kindergarten). Like it or not, summer unofficially ended on Labor Day even though the temperatures here are warmer then we had all summer long (yup 90, hot and humid – just in time for school to begin).
September is very much here and even though part of me wishes that you could ‘wake me when it ends’, I know I need to rise to the challenge and be on my game now for all that is to come trying to enjoy all it has in store for us!
Now onto….
Happy September and welcome to the

I am a summer girl through and through, but fall is a very close second in my book. I love pumpkin food, Halloween, corn mazes and all that faLL STUFF.
Bill says
I’m a seasons kind of guy, so I really don’t mind fall approaching. I like my summer for about two months and then I’m ready to see the leaves change…although at my age, Janine, maybe I shouldn’t be in that big of a hurry for the leaves to change color, if you get what I mean. 🙂 Happy September to you my dear friend.
Diane Roark says
Janine,
I hope Emma has a wonderful 1st day of school. I remember when my first started school I cried and cried. I just wanted her home. I will be thinking about you tomorrow. I bet you will have a more difficult time tomorrow than Emma. She will probably love it.
Thanks for the great hop!!
Blessings,
Diane Roark
Dana says

Good luck to Emma today! It is hard to say goodbye to summer (though with this crazy heat wave it feels like July) but I do love fall 🙂

Aww, I hope Emma (and you) did well on her first day!! It’s rough, I still feel like crying when Kaylee gets on the school bus and this is the second week for her.

I’m a little late but happy to hop on and hop around.Thank you for hosting xo
Robbie says
Hope the first day of school went well! No matter how hard we try we can’t keep the little forever. 🙁
Stephanie @ Life, Unexpectedly says
Lily still has to wait a little over a week until her first day of elementary school! I hope Emma has tons of fun in kindergarten! I’m so excited for fall, even though Lily is sad that pool time and picnics are done until next year (even though these didn’t happen much this summer here). Hoping for a beautiful fall now 🙂
Alexa says
Love that song! Love September (of course, it’s still summer down here til… well, whenever it decides to cool down!) Hope the first day of Kindergarten went well!!!
Tamara says
I have always loved this song. I once met a guy who was playing it on the piano in Nordstrom. I thought that was so cool. Wearing a tux and playing the piano at Nordstrom and playing Green Day!
You know what happened next, right? We dated for a year.
Anyway. We also broke up in September so there was that.
I’m with you! Just telling you my silly stories because this week is HEAVY.
Rea says
Happy September Janine! 🙂 And happy back to school. I know you’re still a little sad about summer ending but I agree, all good things come to an end only to be followed by better things!

It is also hotter here than it has been all summer, which has us quite cranky! Nothing some of those dutch apple bars couldn’t cure, though! 😉 Hope that the start of school went well…kindergarten is just the best!-The Dose Girls
Rabia @TheLiebers says
I am a summertime gal, too. The funny thing is that is just started getting hot here this week. We had a pretty mild summer.
Hope Emma’s first day of school went well!
Kristi Campbell says
I am usually a summer gal – but hate hate hate the humid summers of DC. This year though? It was perfect and awesome and so very magical and the weather was “normal.” I have to wonder if part of it wasn’t perfect though due to the fact that we did so much to celebrate Tucker’s first pre-school (kindergarten) summer. OMG so sad. As you know. So glad to have had you on this ride to sadness and celebration!
Kerri says
Good luck with kindergarten!!!
Allie @ The Latchkey Mom says
I am sorry to see summer go. I love September, though. I love the song as well – thank you for the flashback! And I will check out your blog hop (is it only recipes?) I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger one!
Emily says
It is so ironic that of course this week is so hot and humid – my kids are melting in their schools and wondering why there isn’t air conditioning! I explained to them that it’s only like this for about one week in September, but of course it has to be while they’re in school – I feel bad for them!
Stephanie @ Mommy, for Real. says
Hugs for you and Emma- here’s to a great kindergarten year! (And now that Green Day song is stuck in my head!!) I hope the first week has been fantastic… 🙂
Anna Fitfunner says
I’m a summer person too! I love walking around in flip-flops, and that just work out so well when it isn’t summer outside! Thanks for the blog-hop notice — you’ve got some awesome bloggers there, I’ll have to check it out next Wednesday.
Kelly L McKenzie says
You had to go and include that song didn’t you? Took me right back to the 2006 AGM of our summer swim club. A powerpoint full of zillions of swimming photos of the athletes and their families played to this soundtrack and most of the moms were in tears. It was so good.
And yes thanks for the Wed. blog-hop notice. Great bloggers there. I’ll definitely check it out.
Allison says
Aw, hope Kindergarten went well! Our first time here, too. I cried. A lot. September will be beautiful, just in its own way…
