“She did it!!” This was Emma’s pre-school teacher when I went to pick her up from school today. So you might be asking, what did she do? Well those that have followed my blog regularly have heard all about my kids and their potty time.
Well, at three years old, Emma is fully potty trained, but she was always afraid to use the regular toilet without her princess potty seat insert. I even wrote about her dilemma here.
Everyday since school began this year, I would drop Emma off for school with her backpack and a reusable, recyclable bag with her princess potty seat. The school had allowed this, but it had to be taken with her to school and then taken back with us every night when she came home.
Her teachers have been working with her to overcome this fear, because the toilet at school is a smaller version and very close to the ground. I have noticed over the last two weeks that she no longer uses a step stool and that was apparently brought on by the realization that she doesn’t need it at school.
Well back to today. Apparently when she told the teachers that she needed to use the bathroom, they went with her and asked if she was ready to try it without the potty insert. Guess what? She did just that.
She came out of class when the teachers told me (as I stated earlier) will a huge smile on her face and was wearing a huge ribbon sticker to commemorate the moment. Driving home, she told me that she was a big girl and was going to use the toilet at home without the potty seat, too.
We, then, called dad to tell him all about this on the way home and again she was beaming when she told Kevin that in her words, “She is a big girl now.”
When we did get home, she did indeed show me how she can use the toilet just like a ‘big girl’ and even told me that the princess seat is now Lily’s, because according to Emma, “Lily still needs it”.
So I guess, there will be no more of these types of fights over the princess potty seat. But no worries, I am sure they can find something else to fight over, because the day is still young and that is how they roll!! But one thing is for sure, my baby is now a ‘big girl’ and growing up right before my very eyes.

That is one of those really cool moments that you will remember for the rest of your life. Savor those times my dear; before you know it they will be in the 20's and not quite as cute as now. 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks as always Bill and this really was one of those moments that will never quite be far from my mind. I have to tell you I was just so proud of her and it was just a darn potty seat lol, but it was like she had climbed Mount Everest for us.
JanineHuldie says
Oh thank you so much Lisa 🙂 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Steve and if I had the secret would gladly share. I give credit where credit was due on this. It was truly her wonderful pre-school teachers who got her to try. They worked over and over with her for almost 2 months. We had tried here, but she was so very stubborn for us. I just truly thank god for her teachers, they did such a great job on this.

Thanks Kelly and your girls are almost the same age difference as mine, with my girls being 16 months apart. And Emma truly does such similar stuff to Lily as your older did. Just yesterday, Emma kept taking Fruit Loops out of Lily's dish, thinking it was funny. Of course Lily didn't and would cry each time. I finally had to put Emma in a time out while I cooked dinner. So I can totally relate.
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Richard and loved that you compared it to the astronauts landing on the moon, lol 🙂 But seriously don't even want to think about them dating yet. You are giving me hives, lol 🙂 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Steph and I would totally think you could relate as a mama, too 🙂
Melanie Chisnall says
Woo hoo! What an achievement! Okay, I haven't potty trained any kids, but I can just imagine…I know of people who have struggled for years with this. Such a cute picture of Emma…love it! 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Melanie. She truly is so proud of herself now and tells me, "See I am a big girl." So, I just help but be proud. It might be small accomplishment, but for her it was huge 🙂 🙂
Cari Lorine says
Yay, Emma!! What a big step! I know that potty training can be a frustrating phase, so I'm happy for you Janine. Congratulations to you both! 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Cari, thank you so much. I feel like I can't take the credit on this one, because it was truly her teachers and in the end Emma who did it. But nonetheless I am so very happy for her, because she is truly so very ecstatic over it, so how could not be 🙂
Ruchira says
aawww…Emma looks adorable when you guys fuss over her.
Congrats Janine. Her progress is your progress and it is awesome that she could master this art at age 3.
Take me back to my precious days when my 9 year old was being potty trained. I used to carry his portable everywhere. Now I look back..it was ridiculous but I was being meticulous in my chore 😉
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Ruchira and that is exactly what we did with the potty insert. I no longer have to do it for Emma, but still do for Lily. I always joke that I travel well at least, but seriously the day Lily doesn't need it either, will be one of the happiest days of my life for that one reason alone, lol 🙂 🙂

Thanks so much Audrey 🙂 🙂

A good day for Emma….congrats! A more reflective day for Mom….baby girl growing up! See you soon. xxoo
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Aunt Gloria and looking forward to seeing you before you head to Florida for the winter. xoxo 🙂
Emily says
Go Emma!! Big accomplishment and it sounds like she is one proud girl!
JanineHuldie says
Oh thank you so much Emily and she really is so very proud to be a big girl now 🙂 🙂
Stacy Harris says
Oh awesome… I loved it when my son was potty trained and realized he was finally a big boy. Unfortunatley, we never had issues with the toilet seat. We had issues with going number 2. We bribed him with a batman toy. Let's just say it took a long time for him to realize he wasn't going to get a batman toy after every single poo! LOL
JanineHuldie says
Wrote a reply and it didn't go through Stacy. Thank you and I think each child is different and on their own time schedule, as far as anything including potty training.
JanineHuldie says
Thanks so much Julie. It truly is and now I only have one more to go 🙂 🙂
Cyndi says
What a sweet, sweet girl! Congrats! When they're ready, they'll do what they need to do, huh? 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Cyndi so much and so very true. It has surprised me over and over again when they have been ready to do certain things and am sure that I will be surprised more in the future, too 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Thanks Michelle so much and trust me like clockwork they always do find something to fight over, but then they make up and are each's best friends again. It is a vicious cycle, lol 🙂
JanineHuldie says
Amy, potty training can be a fun ride. Emma started back over a year ago and was finally pretty much potty and underwear by March of this year, but that darn seat insert was with us up until 2 weeks ago for her. Now, Lily is still learning and is in pull-ups (she will be 2 on Friday). Each kid is truly different, but I will say this try to have patience, because it usually doesn't happen overnight. Thank you so very much 🙂 🙂
