The 80s Wonder Years! “The 80s Never Looked Better!”
This is what I keep hearing the new ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs being labeled by so many.
The Goldbergs-The 80s Never Looked Better!I grew up in the 80s and I watched The Wonder Years, but seriously this show happens to be the best new comedy on TV in years (to me), whether or not this is what others may think.
I loved the Wonder Years, but have to admit, I didn’t grow up in the 1960s or 1970s, so as much as I enjoyed watching I couldn’t always relate to the era related tone at times. I totally related to the family issues at hand, but not the actual time period.
By the way, I honestly look forward to Tuesday nights now to follow along with the adventures of these hilarious main characters.
But with The Goldberg’s, I not only relate to family aspect of the show and sheer nuisances that remind me very much or my own crazy family, but I also can feel myself going own memory lane at so much of the actual time period it is supposed to take place during.
I was totally a child of the 80s and still can’t believe I just turned 36 years old in June. I also can’t believe that the 1980s were 30 plus years ago. In 1987, I was 10 years old and the show itself makes me feel like you can very much go home sometimes and also really does give me fond memories of the 1980s.
From the opening song with the 1980s huge, colorful VCR, which we so owned also to the youngest reminding me of how it was to become of age in the 80s decade.
And as if the show wasn’t enough of a flashback for me, recently I was coming home from getting my girls from pre-school and had a Facebook message from an old friend of mine that I had grown up with in the 1980s.
See, we had gone through all of elementary school together and had even graduated the 6th grade together back in 1989.
80s Never Looked Better-Me Circa 1988Amazingly, first off, that we still are in contact. He friended me last year on Facebook. By the way, his mom and my mom were friends back in the day and we totally grew up together. So, it was so very nice to reconnect as friends so many years later.
We even went onto to the local Catholic School for 7th and 8th grade together. When all the other kids had clearly been in this school from kindergarten, we were the two new kids in 7th grade, but still we had each other. So, we bonded over this and so much more back then.
The reason for his contact was that he had decided to upload a hour long video of our 6th grade graduation and share it with me.
I clicked on the link and was instantly transported back to elementary school and 6th grade. It was like 24 years had never happened. The graduation started off with a show that we kids put on about not wanting to grow up (how ironic now looking back) with singing, too.
There was, of course, the diplomas and then the teachers and administrators speaking, too. It was an hour and thirteen minutes where I felt like I was truly a kid again. My own kids sat on my laps enthralled watching it with me.
Truly was bizarre, but also proved one thing to me, that you can indeed totally can go home again and be transported back in time by a YouTube video.
I am including the video and to be honest, you probably couldn’t find me (the diploma ceremony included my maiden name) if you tried, but if you grew up in the 1980s like me, I promise you even if you watch a few minutes (it is over an hour again, so I don’t expect you to watch most of it), you could probably relate to something here even if it is just the clothes or music.
Lastly, the 1980s never did look better!

Yep, I had hair that looked just like that in the 80s! Those were good years, weren't they? i mean, fashion and hairstyles were a bit questionable, but everything else seemed pretty great!

love the school picture, lol! I consider myself more of a 90s kid because I don't even remember much of the 80s, but we definitely had a huge vcr that attached to a camcorder that my dad lugged around when he wanted to film us!

I drank that decade, Janine, so it's kind of a blur. LOL I do remember watching the Wonder Years; now, no television, so I'll have to take your word for it regarding the Goldbergs. 🙂 Have a great day!

I loved the 80s too (except for maybe my "big" hair) and even though I was graduating college when you were 10, I can relate to the crazy styles (shoulder pads – or was that the 90s?) of that time period. Guess I'll have to check out that new show too…I've seen ads for it, but haven't had a chance to watch yet.

I cry and laugh while watching the Goldbergs…it's crazy how we can instantly be transported back int itme. Boy life was great back then right? I look at all the craziness now and fear for Dino…I wanted to grow up, but would give anything just to go back for a visit and feel that security that only a child feels.
Janine Huldie says
I know same here Karen and thought it may be just me. Thank you for letting me know it isn't. And I know I would love to visit even for an hour the 80s for many of the same reasons you stated here 🙂

I've been wanting to see The Goldbergs. I love the guy who is second from the right. He was on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and he was hilarious. Come to think of it, he's on "Arrested Development" too.
I was born in 1980. My childhood was a bit rocky at first but I have such fond memories growing up in the 80's.

I still do love the 80s so very much and I have also seen the father in an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, where Frank fights him about eating fruit in the produce aisle in the grocery store. But everything I have seen him in definitely has made me laugh!! 😉
realhousewife says
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I have no idea who the Goldbergs are! I read a lot and don't watch much t.v. Though. I remember hearing the word "Seinfeld" everywhere for a while and finally I asked someone at work what a Sienfeld was. Boy did they laugh at me…apparently the show had been a hit for a few years by then:)) LOL
It did prompt me to start watching it and I loved the humor! I'll check this show out too.
Loved the video and I was Class of '86 so totally can relate!
Janine Huldie says
Totally have heard of shows like The Sopranos, but didn’t watch them from the beginning either, but once I did start watching was hooked. So can very much relate there. And yay on being the class of 1986!! 🙂

I watched the You Tube video and couldn't believe you were almost the last one to come on stage for the diploma! I'll watch it again for more of the program. Modern technology does have its benefits. What a nice keepsake for you and the girls.
Re the Goldbergs…..I watch the show but I'm not hooked. Enjoy it. This was a nice trip down memory lane for you….and for me…..thanks for sharing it. Love….xxoo
Janine Huldie says
Awe, thanks for watching it. And I know I was totally at the end, because of my height, I was under the stage. So they seemed to go from top to bottom (me being all the way at the bottom). I actually just watched the Halloween episode tonight of The Goldberg's and seriously more hooked then ever. Just something about the memories and it really does seem to bring back so many for me when I do watch now. My pleasure sharing. Love you, too!! xoxo 🙂
