I have a confession to make here today. And yes I know confessions is what my whole site is about (hell it is in the title!), but here is the thing my husband and I argue from time to time.
And yes we do love each other very much, but sometimes we don’t see eye-to-eye on things and fight. It happens and it is just a fact of life.
Anyone that tells you they are married and never argue with their spouse is either lying to you or deluding themselves.
Take, for instance, the day I posted my Old School Marriage Blogging Style, we were actually in the middle of a very fine argument. The post was pre-scheduled and I ran with it, in case you were wondering.
But in any event the post was mushy and sappy. Yet, the night before we got into a fight and I was feeling anything but those above sentiments when the post went live.
How the fight started, I don’t even remember, but do recall it was over money or the lack thereof.
Another confession, we both have three master’s degrees between us and on paper should be making well over six figure salaries combined, but in reality not so much.
When, I completed my master’s degree, I was told I should be able to find a teaching position teaching math with very little difficulty. Again, not so!
So, here I am 7 years after I graduated with my masters in education and not a teaching position available to go around.
I could be a substitute teacher if I so chose and yet would barely make enough to put my kids in daycare. But why should I do that, when someone else would raise my kids for 8 hours a day and I would not have much if anything to even put in savings after paying for said daycare.
Kevin and I have gone over these numbers so many times and keep coming back to that same decision, but it does frustrate him when he sees many others getting houses, who also can’t truly afford or have outside help to afford.
So, yes we do argue. Sometimes over small minutia that honestly just amounts to two people living together who sometimes have their bad habits irk each other. Hey, that is bound to happen. Just a fact of life.
But every once in awhile the argument is about more substantial frustrations like above with money concerns. Don’t get me wrong, we do save as much as we can, but still making monthly payments on a mortgage, taxes and so much more for a house just would not be able to be afforded right now with only one salary.
And as much as I love writing and specifically blogging, it does take a life of its own and does not afford a ton of money for the time I do put into it. Simply put, my income definitely is lacking at this point.
Yet, I built this blog pretty much from the ground up. It was almost like being pregnant again and giving birth. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying my blog is my third child, but I did seriously give me all in creating and building it.
I not only created my own personal header and button, but pretty much designed the background, color scheme, widget layout, advertising, sponsored posts, social media networks and so much more. And I am continually tweaking things on it.
By the way, I busted my butt to get where I am at is my point. I learned design and coding pretty much from the ground up in the process. Kevin went to school for this and does this kind of stuff for a living. I did it here for myself and in the end learned so much of it from trial and error and definitely not in a classroom setting.
So back to the argument at hand (so to speak). When the topic of money came crashing back down on us, Kevin reminded me yet again that I do know my stuff on blog designing and am truly on my game with this.
About a week prior to said argument, I had mentioned in passing that I was toying with this exact notion. But then I got cold feet questioning my ability, because I am truly my own worst critic.
I threw it on the back-burner. Kevin, even in the middle of an argument, had my back. He told me straight on that I do have what it takes and he believes in me. Also, he sat down once we both had a cooling off period and made me list all I do know and have done for my very own blog with little or no help from anyone else.
Here is what I came up with:
- WordPress (Coding/Design/Maintenance)
- Backgrounds (C/M)
- Custom Headers (C/D)
- Custom Menu (CSS/Fonts)
- Sidebars/Widgets
- Button Creations
- Advertising/Sponsors
- Monetization
- Commenting Systems (DISQUS, Comment Luv)
- Social Network Integration (Help)
This is just the tip of the iceberg. And what I don’t always know 100%, I always look up and usually can figure out anyways. I am resourceful, I guess if nothing else.
So bottom line, it looks like I am going to be starting a nice exciting adventure and figure I have nothing to lose and just so much to gain.
Where I am going with this? I am in the process of starting a new site, which offers my blog design and help services for fair, but going rate. The past two weeks, I worked my butt off getting the site just the way I wanted it before I made this big grand announcement. So here comes my huge announcement.
I am now running two websites, this blog that all already know and follow me. But also a second one for web design needs. So if anyone is in need of any blog services or knows anyone who is, please feel free to ask or hit me up in the comments here. And also feel free to check out my new web design company, J9 Designs here.
My Newest Venture–J9 Designs!!Also, as far as arguments can go this one truly was a whopper, but ending up making a happy meal out of it!!
I must say that everything does happen for a reason. And as much as I hate arguing with Kevin, sometimes it is a necessary evil for us to get our frustrations out on the table and to move forward in our relationship and life in general.

Robin Rue says
A million years ago when I first started blogging, I was on blogger and I designed my own site. I spent HOURS searching about how to do things and learn code, but when I decided to switch to WP almost 3 years ago, I just couldn't get it – and didn't have the time to spend learning how to do it myself, so I happily shelled out money to someone to do it for me.
You are SO right when you said blogging takes on a life of it's own. I've said that about my blog a hundred times, but I am really happy with the direction it went it.
Good luck with your newest venture 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so much Robin and I am constantly tweaking and fiddling on here. So, I thought I could put my talent to good use 🙂 🙂
Sara says
I can relate to your money argument. Living in NY it is almost impossible to make ends meet on one salary and yet daycare is sooo expensive. I don't always think husbands understand the value of being a sahm.
Wishing you the best on your new design adventure!!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Sara. I hope you are feeling well and congrats again to you!! So true about the men not always understanding and New York seriously is so damn expensive!!
Dani Ryan says
Congrats on the new site, Janine!!! I think you will be wonderful at it, and will definitely come to you if and when I need some help with my blog!!! And you're right – sometimes you need to have a bit of a breakdown (or argument) to take stock of things and make some changes. I'm so glad to hear it's all moving forward for you! xo
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so very much Dani for all your kindness always to me and for your kind words here. Truly means the world to me. And do hope you do come to me if and when you do need anything. More then happy to help you my friend!! 🙂 xoxo!!
The Next Step says
that looks fantastic Janine! I wish you LOTS of success and I'll be over there this afternoon to check it out!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Lori and totally appreciate all the support!! 🙂 🙂
Leslie says
The site looks fantastic, what awesome services to offer!! Make sure you upload your button to my site to advertise. 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so very much Leslie and will totally upload my new button to advertise on your site. Thank you for the offer!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh thank you Clark and you so could have used old sayings if you want, because it would have made me feel right at home. I probably use too many as it is (at least Kevin would say so, lol!). But seriously thank you my friend!! 🙂
Susan Zutautas says
This is great news! I really need to get a website up and running for our family business and I may end up asking you for some tips and maybe even for some help. Going to go and check out your new site right now. Congrats!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Susan and please do ask if you need anything. Would so be happy to help out in any way I can!! 🙂
The Dose of Reality says
That is just SO EXCITING!!! Thrilled for you and bookmarking your new site immediately as we will most certainly need help in the future…coding is hard! 😉 Congratulations!-The Dose Girls
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Dose Girls and totally happy to help you ladies with any coding issues and truly appreciate the support!! 🙂
WhenCrazyMeetsExhaus says
Good for you, J9! 😉 Love the name by the way!! (P.S. I teach online–email me if you want details!)
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Stephanie and J9 has always been a nickname of mine and Kevin was the one who said, "Why not try something with this!" And I will so e-mail you about teaching online. Thank you for any information you can supply!! 🙂
Kenya Johnson says
Well you go girl! I love that somecard. I've never monetized my blog. I am glad that my husband doesn't know its a thing. Whew. Good suggestion from commenter below. Teaching online offers great income so I've heard and you are certainly qualified. Web experience alone would be a biggie.
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Kenya and I too loved that Someecard and summed it up quite nicely I thought. I love all the monetization options you can have for a site and truly the options are unlimited. If you ever wanted to try your hand at it, let me know 🙂 🙂
SarahA says
Good luck Janine! Good for you for taking on a new venture. I have a page on my blog where I can and will put your design blog for some advertising for you!
I sure understand how you feel in the money situation. My husband is a mechanical engineer, so on paper it looks fabulous! However once you factor in gas and expenses we're barely making it each month (He drives two hours a day to work). Everyone asks me why I don't sub-mine is lack of affordable and reliable daycare period. No one wants to watch my little girl with little to no notice! This is the fun of living in rural Iowa. However, in the fall it will be a totally different story.
Janine Huldie says
Sarah, totally understand the daycare situation. If it was just one it might be doable for us, but with two I just can't justify that expense and barely breaking even for it subbing. That said than you so very much for the advertising offer and will totally take you up on it. Just let me know what I have to do.
Stephanie Sprenger says
Wow! That is huge news! Congratulations! I have to admit, your argument struck a chord with me. It is a topic that has come up a LOT in our house the past few months. Blogging…the time I spend on it…where I want to go with it… it is really hard for my husband to grasp. I am REALLY proud of you Janine for focusing your design talents like this! Go you!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Stephanie and just glad to know it isn't just us who argue over this. My husband is supportive, but does get frustrated with all the time spent and no huge return on it. And sounds like you and I can shake hands and totally commiserate on this.
Cropped Stories says
Good for you! This must be exciting! I took a look at your site and services and it's looks great! Good luck :o) Have an awesome day!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much for looking and hope to help out many if they need with this 🙂
Cyndi says
Janine – you rock! I hope that new site totally takes off. You're amazing and I think it will! Kudos to you. Can't wait to check it out. 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh thank you so very much Cyndi and I really am very grateful for your support and friendship, too!! 🙂
Bill says
Best of luck to you, Janine. I'm sure you will find satisfaction in anything that you attempt….and if you reach your goal all the better.
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so very much Bill and truly appreciate all your kind words and thoughts here!! 🙂
mrs_karenC says
Lots of luck babe, I am a reading specialist and have been laid off twice for budget cuts. With all my degrees and certification it's disheartening to not find work. I feel your pain.
You are right though, one door closes and another opens.
Janine Huldie says
Oh Karen, I am sorry you too have been laid off from this poor economy and it is truly disheartening. Thank you so much for all your kind words here and support, too!! 🙂
Dana says
Congratulations on your new site, Janine – it takes guts to start a new project and I'm sure you will be successful. Going to check it out right now!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Dana and I truly am excited about this and hope to help a great many now, too!! 🙂
Kerri Ames says
I love how you had an argument that was basically about your husband saying you are better than you think 🙂 We have a saying, I Supporting one another even when we might not like them at the moment.
Janine Huldie says
Kerri, I love that saying and you are so right here in essence!! Thank you 🙂
Diana Chastain says
We fight about money and which one of us works the hardest. I think fighting makes for a healthy marriage, actually. At least you are communicating. Good luck on the new venture!
Janine Huldie says
So nice to know it isn't just us Diana and very true that communicating does help to strengthen a marriage. Thank you for your good wishes, too!! 🙂
Melanie Chisnall says
I'm so proud of you!! Look at you go, there really is no stopping you, and you too are on fire! Interesting that we both came out with new websites today. 🙂 Like you, I also realised that writing alone isn't going to bring in enough money, and Janine – I can so relate to your arguments about money, because we've been having similar. I feel guilty for the fact that we too can't afford our own house or go away or other things, because I chose to work from home. That's why I decided to expand into art and design as well. I've always designed things – I even did it for my home business, and don't know why I stopped. It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who was feeling like that. Well enough about that….I just checked out your page….WOW! It looks fantastic! Well done. So excited for you!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks you so very much Melanie and you know the feeling is quite mutual. And just like you I do feel guilty that my writing wasn't helping as much with paying the bills, so this hopefully will help with that one and utilize a skill that I am truly loving and having a ton of fun with, too. And by the way, your new page too looks fabulous. Keep up the good work too and am so very excited for you, as well!! 🙂
Eddy Jones says
This is brilliant Janine another wonderful string to your bow !!!I hope I got that saying right;I very often end up with the quotes a little wrong!!Ha ha!!
A wonderful page and here I wish you well in all you do because you are certainly one of life’s winners and so inspiring also.
Lots of love from my little corner of Wales.
Eddy.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Eddy and the saying sounds fine to me and will so work 🙂 And seriously you are too kind and truly appreciate it!! Love right back at you!!
Janine Huldie says
Kelly, I couldn’t even begin to lie about that one and trust me I know couples who try so hard to make it like they never do argue. And for the most part, I can’t help, but think they are full of it. And if not then think they are in some serious trouble, because I so believe it is the fights and communicating that keeps things alive and going strong. and please do contact me. I will so help you with whatever you need. Would so be my pleasure!! 🙂
Michelle Liew says
Oh yes. He who never argues with his spouse is deluded…or giving in too much! Thanks for sharing, and this has been put into Muses from the Deep’s writer’s gazette!
Janine Huldie says
Oh hank you as always Michelle and seriously so very much appreciated. So true about those who say they never argue with their spouses being quite deluded, too 🙂
Ruchira says
Awesome venture, Janine.
Wishing you the best 🙂
Voted for you!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much on all levels Ruchira. So very appreciated 🙂

Heather says
Congrats! Its hard work, but you can do it! I’ll follow your new blog design website too if you’d like, although I am a designer myself. Maybe in the future we can exchange buttons or something to help promote each other. Its good that your husband is encouraging your skills, my husband still doesn’t get what I do, and sometimes he makes fun of it, but he loves the income I get from it. I am a new follower from the no rules hop, and I’d love for you to stop by sometime when you get a chance
Anyway, have a great week!
Heather from Mommy Only Has 2 Hands
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Heather and heading over to your page to check it out. I would love to trade buttons with you and would be very interested in doing so!! 🙂
Venassa says
Good for you! I wish I could figure out a way to bring in a little extra income. I did all my blog design, and love doing that kind of stuff but I’m not good at doing that kind of stuff on a schedule. Good luck on your new venture!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Venassa and trust me I kept trying to come up with ideas and just hoping this one is a winner now!! 🙂
Chelsea Msmummyoftwo says
Well done! Love the blog (my first time) So pleased you are going for it, sometimes it takes things like an argument to push you into it and make you realise! x
Janine Huldie says
Thank you Chelsea and so glad to have you here, too!! And so true that sometimes it takes an argument to push you int he right direction!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Lol, I know I felt that way at first, but then I truly ended up loving coding. Go figure!! And thank you so very much Melissa for all your kind words and for adding my button, too. So very appreciated 🙂
Kristi Campbell says
Whoop, whoop! Janine! Congratulations. I’m so impressed! Great job and I guess sometimes arguments do help us figure out where we’re going with things.
Janine Huldie says
Love that “Whoop, Whoop” and thank you so very much Kristi. So true that some arguments are just meant to be and bring bigger and better!! 🙂
Rose A says
Oh my gosh, when I did my Old Style Blogging post that went up yesterday, I was feeling sappy happy too, and I told hubby to come have a look. He ignored me so I asked again thinking nothing of it. Do you know what that man said to me? My loving wonderful husband (yes, he’s still those things), said, “Why would anyone even want to read your blog?”
No idea what was itching his foot, but for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel like helping him scratch it. 😉 Something good will come out of that disagreement too, I’m sure. I didn’t know he had no interest in what I was doing, I guess he’s not happy it doesn’t bring in money but takes up time, just like you’re saying. That’s my guess. We didn’t hash it out because the kids were around and I didn’t trust myself to speak rationally if I opened my mouth at that very moment. 😉
Anyway, good luck with your new business. Your blog looks great, your networking skills are our terrific, and if you’re comfortable finding the answers to questions that do pop up, which you seem to be, I’m betting you’ll do wonderfully well! Maybe it’s not the way you wanted to use your MAE, but it’ll still come in handy to have it, I’m sure!
Janine Huldie says
Oh Rose so happy to know it isn’t just me and seriously ironic, but your description sounded so similar to my own. True that blogging doesn’t always make us a ton, but I do love it. Unfortunately some look at the amount made versus the way it makes us feel. I hope you do get to speak you mind and trust me feel for you, because as you can see from above I have so been there. And I thank you so much for your well wishes here and really willing to try and give this one my all!! 🙂
Vashti Q says
Go for it Janine! Everyone has self doubt before a new venture, and look how far you’ve come! 😀
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Vashti and so going to try best here!! 🙂
AnotherCleanSlate says
Couple that don’t argue are weird- I don’t trust them. Maybe I can be one of your first clients!!
Janine Huldie says
I am so with you on this and would trust them either. And would love for you to be one of my first clients. Just say the word!! 🙂
Michelle G says
Well done Janine, and all the best to you x
Janine Huldie says
Thank you again Michelle so very much!! 🙂
Kera says
Janine!! This is so awesome! I’ve been toying around with the idea of doing blog design on the side too, since I really do love it and design my own blog, but I wimped out and told myself that too many other bloggers offer this and I’m probably not as skilled as they are. Plus, it does take up a good amount of time that I’m not sure I could afford coming up on having another baby. I’m so proud of your decision and I want to support you any way that I can. Let me know if I can write a post for J9 Designs or if you
Kera says
want to have an ad spot on my blog. Congrats on taking the leap! And tell Kevin that I’m glad he argued with you lol 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh Kera, if I was pregnant and having another infant again I don’t think I would be able to do this. But seriously, maybe you could think about it once the baby is even a year or two old.
And I would love for you to write up a post and advertise, too. Let me know what works for you and will so try to work something out with you. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart!! 🙂
Kera says
That’s what I’m thinking 🙂 And yes, let’s work something out where I can advertise for you and write up a post!
Janine Huldie says
You name the when and where I am yours!!! 🙂
Susan Cook says
Congrats on your new business/website.

Thank you Susan and so my pleasure. Huge congrats again to you and thank you for stopping back here, too 🙂 🙂

Janine! This is super exciting and wonderful! I am so very proud of you!!! If you would like to put an ad on my blog, for free of course, let me know and I’ll get you a promo code!!! I’d love to help you get the word out! You have been such an amazing bloggy friend and supporter!!!!!
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so much Alexa and I will so take you up on that. Just let me know what I have to do. E-mail me if you can and so thank you for this!! But you too are a wonderful bloggy friend and just so happy to have you in my corner!!
Katia DBE says
Good luck, Janine! It’s such a proud moment to make that decision and to go for it. Your credentials are very impressive. What I did for a living, before going on my mat leave, is recruiting and I helped people enhance their resumes and highlight their skills. If you’d like me to take a look at your website from a content point of view to make sure your skills are all show cased, I’ll be happy to do that (free of charge, of course) 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Thank you for your good wishes and also for that offer. If you would do that in your spare time and let me know that would be awesome. Seriously, all I can say is thank you!! 🙂
Melissa S. says
omg, omg, omg, omg!!! Yay for you!!! So excited. I’ll be honest, this is not where I saw this post going, lol, but I am so excited and happy for you. That’s what this life you chose is all about: being the best you possible. And I’ll definitely be hitting you up for some consult work. 😉 Again, congratz to you!
Janine Huldie says
Oh thanks so much Melissa and I couldn’t agree more. And look forward to working on this with you and please do contact me!! 🙂
Amy says
So true. Love the whopper into a happymeal thing. I find even though my husband and I get along pretty well, some days all I want to do is punch him in the throat. I think it is good to have those fights every once in a while to clear the air and make sure the communication is good still. I am so proud if you! I love the new site.
Janine Huldie says
Oh thank you so much Amy and I love your description of a whopper into a happy meal. Absolutely great and do very much agree about those types of fights that do clear the air and help open those lines of communication!! 🙂
Menopausal Mother says
I am so excited for you!!! I know it’s hard to live off one salary—but I think you have found yourself and what you love to do through blogging–which also enables you to stay home with the kids– I think you made the right decision and I am happy for you!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Marcia and I am truly hoping that this will help out with being able to do just that!! 🙂 🙂
Joyce says
I have no doubt that you will find a teaching job soon, if you still want one. The politicians and public have been treating teachers so badly, that anyone eligible to retire is doing so. We have six teachers who have announced retirement at our school, and 60+ wishing they could.
http://joycelansky.blogspot.com
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Joyce and will say that I, myself, am now questioning that, as well, seeing all that other teachers are going through with the current political trend in education. I feel for these teachers and it is from all I hear really quite brutal right now even for those with the thickest of skins. Just quite scary!!
Joyce says
Yep! I’m a teacher, and teaching is nothing like it used to be. I’m about four years away from a possible retirement.
Janine Huldie says
Joyce, it is quite awful from all I do hear from those that are still teaching that I do know and good for you that you are that close to retirement!! 🙂
April says
That’s great! Awesome! I really need to get into marketing more. I have a small side venture and barely do anything with it. Of course, it’s all me.
I don’t know, I feel bad when I say I don’t argue with my husband, but I can’t remember the last time we did. Partially because we made an agreement not to hold on to things, so we say them when they come out. We also both try not to come with a problem without a proposed solution… not sure how that really worked out, but it has.
But with a happy meal as the outcome, who can argue with that!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks April and I must admit I can’t argue a Happy Meal as an outcome either, lol!! And sounds like you and your husband have a great arrangement worked out 🙂 🙂

Hi Janine! I think everybody fights over money. The Missus and I are no exception. I think the thing to keep in mind is that your girls are small for such a short time. You can't get that time with them back if you are gone all of the time. Savor the time you have with them and remind your husband that the "things" can wait. This is a season and there will be a time for you to work and bring more money in and, speaking of that, congratulations on your new site and adventure! That is exciting! Go Janine!

I think sometimes arguments are productive and afterward, making up always leads me to feeling closer to my husband. Like we can get through a disagreement and come out the other side knowing that we still love each other. That means more than never fighting.
How exciting that you have a new business! I'll share it right now!! 🙂
Janine Huldie says
Oh I totally do agree with you Camille and feel so much the same way you described about when my husband and I do fight. And thank you so much Camille for your kind words and for sharing, too!! 🙂

Good luck with your new venture!! Sometimes things happen for a reason…maybe the argument was one of them! It paved the way for you to start a new business, sooner rather than later! Congrats!!
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so much Michelle and I do very much agree with you on this. So happy for small favors!! 🙂

Stopping by from SITS! Best of Luck!!! Success comes when you recognize opportunity when it presents itself. I too just started a new media venture with an illustrator partner. The opportunity came when More magazine eliminated the page I'd been writing regularly for them. With more time on my hands I was able to figure out what I really wanted to spend my time doing and … voila! Within a few months, I'd created Science of Parenthood, and having a blast. Run with this! No telling where it'll take you!
