7 Back to School Wishes for My Kids

Filed Under: back to school, Being a mom, BLOG, One Word Challenge, parenting Tagged With: Back to School, One Word Blog Challenge, wishes

I sit here quietly now after the rush of the very, first school morning back for us this year. Yet I am overcome with memories of our long, lazy crazy summer. Still I am also whole-heartedly hoping for a smooth transition for both my girls this school year. Therefore, my back to school wishes for them are abundant.

However, I am still quite blown over that both my babies are clearly growing up.

As much time as I have had to prepare myself these last few months, today it was real, as well as so very clearly tangible for me to see.

Plus, I admit that mornings are never good here. But always happy when I can say that we made it in one piece onto the school bus on time, especially this first morning back. As well as content that we survived the back to school at school goodbyes.

Only an hour has gone by since that long goodbye. Now, I truly cannot believe how ridiculously quiet my house really can be.

“It is so quiet, I could hear a pin drop” actually has some truth to it.

See I literally dropped a metal paper clip I was going to use. And it really does make a loud noise when little people aren’t around to create all sorts of chaos and noise.

Once again no more babies here. Because of this it is the first time in years, I can see hours ahead daily (Monday – Friday) now without little kid distractions.

Yet as much insanity that can and has ensued here, I miss it so very much.

Nor am truly used to this silent pause.

I now have too much peaceful time on my hands now to contemplate my school wishes for this upcoming year for us.

But make no mistake, I am well aware of all that goes along with school days. This includes homework battles, keeping track of after school activities, staving illnesses off and more.

When you wish upon a star (Tinkerbell)

If they could wish upon a star or Tinkerbell…

But still I am trying to be as positive about it all. So, I am coming up with specific school wishes for my kids.

7 Back to School Wishes for My Kids

Therefore shedding light on my actual simple back to school wishes for my girls this upcoming school year below:

1. It has to get better.

You may be having a grumpy morning or not wanting to get out of bed or eat your breakfast. But I promise it will get better as your day goes on. So don’t forget to smile at some point. Also, remember even though you are not here with me, you are never far from my heart and thoughts.

2. Remember I love you.

Even when I am not there though during the school day, I hope to give you a gentle reminder that I am still am. Look for even the smallest of gestures. This could possibly be in the form of a note or picture in your snack bag to let you know that I do very much love you always.

3. At the end of the day I am here.

I know that 6 plus hours is a long time to be at school and away from home. But I promise to always be there at bus pickup with a smile and hug. This goes for the good days, as well as not not so good days. And even on the coldest, most miserable days, I’ll be there to welcome you back home.

4. Please share with me.

That you will remember or recall some of what you did each day to share with me, once you do return back home to me later in the school day.

5. I listen with my heart.

But even if you don’t think you can share with it with me though, please know that you can. Not only this, but that I will listen. Why? Simply because I love you deeper than any river or ocean could ever be.

6. Dream big and never stop learning.

I know the dreaded after school homework is not what you want to do after working at school all day. Sometimes though we all have to do things we may not necessarily enjoy. Homework is one of those things. However, homework reinforces what you have learned. Plus, you continue to learn and become more well rounded. Trust me that your teachers aren’t trying to punish you with this homework. Homework and learning go hand-in-hand. So, they help you to essentially dream bigger.

7. All you need is sleep.

Bed time isn’t a penalty either. But is there so that you can be well rested for more days of school time fun and learning.

And when all else fails, only 179 mornings left until summer vacation. But who’s counting?!

Looks like a happy first morning of school for your two cuties! I wish them a wonderful year. I can relate to the “so quiet you can hear a pin drop.”… and since my baby was off to college, there is no bus to meet and no “noise” to wait for. Thank heavens for FaceTime:)

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 7:44 am

Aw, got to love FaceTime and have a feeling someday it will come in more than handy here, too. Thanks Seana!! 🙂

Love your words of wisdom. It is a big transition for you! Every stage takes some adjusting, but you will do great – as will your girls! I have to admit though, every year I feel a little teary that my kids are one year, one grade older and more independent but I still echo your same sentiments and words of wisdom!!

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 8:42 am

Thanks Leah and you are right each year I do seem to get that much more sentimental with the whole back to school thing and my girls.

    Good Morning Janine,

It is hard to believe that your babies are all in school. Mornings were always stressful in my house with my 5 kids, I always tried to cook a hot breakfast which was crazy. Every year, we had kids in public school, private school and homeschool based on their needs. It was crazy. Looking back, the worst part was not ever having the same holidays not even spring break. We made it through it. Somehow, I blinked and my two oldest babies are gone. I am missing them so much. I would even like a FEW crazy mornings. JUST A FEW!
    Blessings,
    Diane

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 8:57 am

Diane, god bless you with hot breakfasts during the week, as I am barely getting my two to eat cereal and drink something before running out the door, but still I know what you mean about missing them, because as I type this they are both at school and I have already thought about them more times than I can count now!

  8. Bill says

    September 9, 2015 at 9:56 am

Our last, Allora, goes off to college in two weeks. She went off on a week-long hike last week, and it was completely weird not having a kid in the house for a week. I can’t imagine what it will be like when she’s gone for months. Bev and I might actually have to communicate. LOL Just kidding, but I get it. 🙂 Try to enjoy the quiet time and thanks for sharing.

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 9:58 am

Aw, I can’t even imagine college and that much quiet time yet, but still I do think you and Bev will do just fine. And what can I say, but hope you both also enjoy the quiet time, as well now soon! 🙂

I remember feeling so conflicted when faced with a quiet house. Grateful for some peace and quiet, yet missing them all at the same time.

Wishing you a happy back to school week!

What I loved about my kids being at school is that I could be very productive for those few hours and I looked forward to picking them up in my car and hearing the download of information about their day. Talk talk talk all the way to bedtime!

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 1:54 pm

I know exactly what you mean and both my girls are true chatterboxes now from bus drop-off to bed-time now, too! 😉

one day I will get sleep, yes?! right now, I just want franco to be a teenager so I can sleep through the night. but I know when he goes to school (seems like years from now), I will have the same feelings you’re having. you are an amazing mama! your girls and hubby are so lucky.

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 5:48 pm

I remember that feeling well and I do love my sleep so much, but still miss them around here, too. Such a double-edged sword indeed!

  16. April G says

    September 9, 2015 at 6:26 pm

Those are such beautiful sentiments. My son entered middle school but I didn’t seem to have much of a reaction. That could be because he’s going to the same school and there was no “newness” to it all.

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 7:56 pm

Aw, I know it is truly the newness that has seemingly gotten me it would seem!

  17. sue says

    September 9, 2015 at 7:32 pm

It is always hard seeing them go back to school after a long vacation. However you have some great wishes for them and as long as your children have your love that is the best thing they could wish for. Thanks for the opportunity to linkup at #1WordChallenge

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 7:56 pm

Aw, totally my pleasure, Sue and I agree about giving my kids all the love I have and can now, too 😉

  18. Robin (Masshole Mommy) says

My oldest went off to middle school this year and that was a tough pill to swallow. They grow up way too fast.

    • Janine says

Aw, Robin they definitely grow up way too fast! Hugs.

I still remember the first day my youngest went off to kindergarten. The silence was deafening!

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 9:15 pm

You are so right about the silence and definitely couldn’t agree more, Lisa!

  20. Nellie @ Brooklyn Active Mama says

    September 9, 2015 at 9:18 pm

Yes! Such great advice! I love the fact that you mentioned being grumpy when they kids get up because my eldest is SO not a morning person. It takes so long just to get him up and he is not happy about it at all. Like you say though, I tell him about all the awesome that is going to happen in his day and he gets a little better–but boy is it tough!!

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 9:21 pm

Aw, totally tough Nellie and it is actually my younger one who is so not a morning person, but can’t totally blame her as sadly she gets it from me! 😉

  21. Nicole Johnson says

    September 9, 2015 at 9:42 pm

I love that you already have the countdown until next summer vacation. While I’m glad my kids are back to school I already miss them.

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 9:49 pm

I know Nicole, I am missing them terribly and hoping that next summer comes quickly now to be honest.

  22. Jack says

    September 9, 2015 at 9:56 pm

The time goes far too quickly. My brood come home and lock themselves in their rooms, content to be alone to decompress while dad asks for more than a grunt hello. 🙂

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 10:27 pm

Jack, I am hoping time won’t go that quickly and yet sadly I know better.

  23. Tamara says

    September 9, 2015 at 10:08 pm

    179 mornings.. I think I can. I think I can.
That’s so sad and happy and sweet all at once! I leave Scarlet notes too. And my smiling or cloudy face is always there at 3:00pm on the dot, even if it’s -17 out. Which it will be soon. Sigh.
Both kids are at school for six hours right now. Next year Des will only be at school for four. How on earth will I cope with that?

    • Janine says

      September 9, 2015 at 10:29 pm

I am so not looking forward to -17 at all and yet I know it is coming. As for coping, text me and we can cope together. Hugs.

  24. Leslie says

    September 9, 2015 at 10:27 pm

I can only imagine how emotional that moment must have been. And I think your girls are going to have a lot of fun. Also, it may feel like you have a lot of time right now – but it will get filled up quickly!

    • Janine says

    Sigh…

Beautiful wishes my friend. I will second them!

ENJOY YOUR PEACE AND QUIET!! (As hard as it is to adjust…)

    • Janine says

Aw, thank you so much, Chris and truly just can’t say that enough 😉

  27. Bev says

    September 10, 2015 at 6:46 am

Those are beautiful reminders for your girls! I can imagine all the feelings that go with having two kids now in elementary school! We have to start thinking about preschools for Eve for next year, which is crazy to think about. I think her being in childcare one day a week since she was a few months old will help us both with that transition.

    • Janine says

      September 10, 2015 at 6:49 am

Thanks so much, Bev and I do think that will help ease your transition indeed.

Great photo with your girls! I wish the same thing for J who’s entered kindergarten. Such a long day and he doesn’t share much after school. I only get snippets and only get them when I ask the simplest of questions. Enjoy the school year!

    • Janine says

      September 10, 2015 at 8:38 am

Aw, thanks Lisa and I know I get bits and pieces, as well from my younger one and only when I ask now, as well. Have a great school year, too 😉

  29. Rabia @TheLiebers says

I am not a huge fan of homework, either. Somehow we’ve lucked out with a few teachers who don’t really assign much this year! That’s gonna be nice!

    • Janine says

      September 10, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Definitely so lucky and hoping for the same here now to be honest, Rabia!!

  30. Dana says

    September 10, 2015 at 3:30 pm

My kids and I are counting the days too! It will fly by, though. I’m used to the house being quiet, which is why I talk to myself more than I probably should. And I sing a little too.

    • Janine says

      September 10, 2015 at 3:55 pm

Aw, Dana I would love to hear you sing though 😉

  31. Aunt Gloria says

    September 10, 2015 at 11:09 pm

You captured what the first day of school means for most parents. So beautifully expressed. I know the girls will have a good school year and you will accomplish a lot for yourself with time opening up. And the after-school reunions and activities will make up for those homework assignments, a necessary evil! Good luck to the girls and to you. Love xxoo

    • Janine says

    • Janine says

I’m so glad you linked this up with FTSF too – it’s perfect. And WEEP to our babies being in FIRST GRADE! Gah. Also I love love your photos!!

Such a sweet picture of all of you. This post almost made me cry. I am always praying for that quiet time, but then when I have it, I want my baby back again. The thought of sending her out to school all day makes me feel empty already. They grow up to fast.

So sweet! I’ve always been a teacher and wasn’t able to see my daughter off on the first day of school (daddy took over). Now that I’m a SAHM, I was finally able to do it. Even though my daughter is in 2nd grade, it was really hard to see her go because we had so much time together over the summer! I was sad all morning but fortunately after a couple days it all just seems normal 🙂

    • Janine says

      September 13, 2015 at 7:00 am

Lisa, I was also a teacher before having my kids, but you are right it does get better, but that first day definitely brings all sorts of emotion to the surface after the long summer time spent together.

I still get misty eyed on the first day of school, and take those “first day of school” photos (even though the boys are slightly puzzled about the big “to do” I keep making as they start another school year!). I’m glad that you’re enjoying your quiet time, and then your chatter time, and wish that their school year goes by in fun and fulfilling fashion!
