Day #6~ Dig out a childhood photo and share something you remember happening during that time the photo was taken. (By the way, this is Sunday’s prompt, but because I don’t technically blog on Sundays, I am posting today.)
From the time I was a kid, I loved the show Three’s Company. My mom used to watch many of the ABC channel sitcoms back then. I would sit and watch with her on the couch until I fell asleep and then my dad would carry me up to my bed.
The show itself was hilarious and loved watching the antics that the zany, Jack Tripper would get himself into weekly. I didn’t really understand the double entendre’s at the time, but still loved watching.
In real life, I made friends with two other young girls on the block when I was about 8 or 9 years old. But you know the old adage about three catty young girls playing and being together. Well, it is true, because whenever I was playing with one of them or the other, we were fine for the most part, but whenever all three of us were together it usually ended quite ugly.
These two girls were cousins and one of them was very jealous of anyone getting too close and being friends with her cousin. So, she truly never really wanted to share her cousin. If we were all playing together she would usually get jealous and create some sort of drama.
This went on for about 2 or 3 years before one day she actually went too far. She wrote down her actual nasty thoughts in a letter giving it to me. When my mom saw it, she had had enough and actually took the note to confront the girl’s mom.
What you might ask was in that note that upset my mom so?
She actually signed the note off at the end, “Eat shit and die!” I am not kidding a nine year old little girl wrote this.
It hurt me, but I wasn’t a mother to understand the gravity of this situation. Now being a mom to not one, but two little girls, I get where my mom was coming from and think if this were to happen to one of my girls, I would have reacted the same or similar as my mom did.
I mentioned here awhile back that I had to go back to where we grew up for a funeral of a family friend, who was hit by a car. I actually ran into this girl’s uncle and the father of the cousin that I used to play with, too. He starting talking about how us three girls used to hang out with each other. I tried to be nice and politically correct and he said, “You can say it, my niece was a little bitch!”
Well, number one, I nearly died hearing the father of a childhood friend say this, because I was a kid the last time I saw him and then once I got over my shock, I had to agree with him, because she really kind of was.
So, it was nice to be vindicated after all these years!
And in the end with us girls back then, “Three was definitely not company!”

That from a NINE year old? Jeez – I am so happy your mom ran to your defense. That's so not ok.
Janine Huldie says
I know Robin, she was absolutely crazy. I tried as a kid to look past most of that craziness, but seriously she had issues and then some. This just was the icing on the cake and proved it in the end.
notinjersey says
that is too funny that the uncle said that!
Janine Huldie says
I know Dara, seriously I practically choked back laughter when he said it!!
anothercleanslate says
Oh my goodness! She sounds like a real witch!
Janine Huldie says
I hate to say it, but she really was Kate, but back then I just wanted to be friends with everyone and not start fights for no reason (come to think of I still feel this way for the most part), but she was always starting something, just because she could.

My favorite memory of your first year is simply getting better aquainted. I have thoroughly enjoyed that most of all! π

Thanks so much and so glad we have gotten to know each other this past year! π

Another wonderful post Janine; I have to tell you once again that this blog is amazing and you still find time for all those other daily tasks. Love it and here's to so many more from you my dear friend. Lots of love.
Eddy.
Janine Huldie says
Aww, thanks as always Eddy and just happy to be able to share with you. Love right back at you as always, too!! π
Rosey says
That's pretty young to be writing such things, crazy!! I had a gf who was my bff all through grade school. We got to middle school and she dropped me for another friend, like a hot potato. No reason why and she never talked to me again, though I saw her and her friend talking about me. It was weird. I saw her in the grocery store five or six years ago when I was home visiting, and she deliberately ignored me again. So odd!! I've sometimes wondered what on earth happened, but mostly I don't care. π

Rosey, I know and looking back as a mom now, fi anyone did this to either of my girls not sure what I would do. And I do have a few friends that I also no longer keep in touch with and wonder sometimes, but not enough to want to look anyone one up, if that makes sense!
krissottoh says
Ooh she sounded like a mean girl. I wonder what she must have been like in her tweens?

My recent post Halloween in Britain – import or export?
Janine Huldie says
Oh, she totally was and heard that in junior high she was actually jumped by a bunch of girls, because of this. Guess she got a bit what was coming to her.
Billybuc says
I have to be careful how often I pull out old photos. All of my loved ones from the past are dead, and sweet melancholy can turn into depression very quickly. I have to be in the right frame of mind to do so. π thanks for sharing that story with us…..and have a wonderful Monday Janine.
Janine Huldie says
Bill, I do know that feeling here a bit too now, especially with out wedding photos from only 7 years ago are riddled with grandparents, aunt, uncles and even a cousin on Kevin's side that is no longer with us. So, I also have to watch what photos I pull out, because really could make me feel a bit down, too. My pleasure sharing and wishing you a great Monday now, as well!!
realhousewife says
Wow! Janine I'd have been one mad mother too if I saw my 9 year old writing that garbage! Goodness where is she learning that kind of hatred?
When we first moved here…my girls were 4 and 5…the little 7 year old across the street took a permanent red marker and wrote B I T C H .. Across my concrete patio! I was so mad, went over to speak to her parents and they said how do you know YOUR daughters didn't do it? I said ummm…because neither of them know how to spell bitch! Lmao!
Janine Huldie says
Love how his parents couldn't take responsibility for their son. That was definitely part of the problem with this girl, because her mom didn't see any issues and didn't think her daughter was at fault for anything. So, this is why this girl did a lot of what she did and how she got away with it for the most part. As a parent know, I would definitely reprimand my kids if they did something like this and not just fluff it off!
Dana says
You know it's bad when your own uncle calls you a bitch! I loved Three's Company, too – although my mom didn't let us watch it so we had to sneak peeks when she wasn't looking!
My recent post Ten Things of Thankful
Janine Huldie says
I know Dana and still can't believe that he did call her a bitch to my face. And Three's Company was such a great show. Still can't believe my mom let me watch it with her, but she knew I really didn't get it at that point in my life and more was just laughing at the physical comedy of it then actual meanings behind the jokes. π
MrsTee says
That is so crazy! I had a 'friend' who was the same with me. She ended up stealing one of my toys and my mother and her mother had a very umm intense conversation…LOL
Janine Huldie says
I know how crazy and thank you for sharing I wasn't the only one who had a similar situation happen!! π
Michelle Liew says
My lord, was she nasty! Quite a handful indeed. Let's hope she grew up nicer!
Janine Huldie says
I am so hoping, but from what I hear not so and seriously I guess some people just can't change!!
dishofdailylife says
Absolutely hysterical story Janine!! Hopefully she outgrew it!! LOL
Janine Huldie says
Thanks Michelle and pretty sure she didn't, but still can't believe how she was at such a young age!
April says
Sometimes, the hard thing about being a child is not understanding whether the adults know and why they aren’t super heroes to stop it. Glad you had your mom there! Was she still a bitch as an adult? Glad you were vindicated!
Janine Huldie says
From all I hear, yes she was still very much a bitch and just glad my mom was indeed there to stick up for me and the vindication is was the icing on the cake. π
@Mrs_KarenC says
OMG…wow… I think I woudl have reacted the same way as your mom too…girls can be so nasty sometimes….I hope she is no longer a witch.
Janine Huldie says
Karen, I know and think my mom had the perfect reaction at this point in my life and sad to say I think she is still not a very nice person.

Phenomenal Mama says
This is hilarious. . .well, now it is. I'm sure back then it wasn't! I was such a Three's Company fanatic too!! I freaking loved that show!! Yeah, some times there is way too much competition when you get more than one female together. . and it's unfortunate that it starts at such a young age! Loving your throwback pic by the way. ;-))
My recent post Some Things Never Change
Janine Huldie says
Thanks so very much and I know Three's Company was truly an awesome show and still will watch reruns if I catch them. This is my true worry for my girls, too, because it seems to start younger and younger with each generation!
tamaralikecamera says
Holy cow – I would have done what your mom did. Scratch that. I would have gone up to that girl and said, "Eat shit and die, ok?" (not really) Someone was mean to Scarlet today at school and my claws almost came out. I retracted them, though.
The picture of you is gold. I think I had the same shorts.
Janine Huldie says
Tamara, my mama claws totally would have come out. I mean not that I wouldn't try to get to the bottom, but still the reaction when you see your kid getting hurt is to protect, so I would have to be the protector. And I love that picture and so knew I had to use it. She was originally in it, but I cropped her out and just zoomed in. Didn't want to post a picture of someone who couldn't very well give permission to it. And love that we may have had the same shorts!! π
Sara says
That picture!!! I swear I had those shorts. I can't believe a nine year old would say that. I want to keep our kiddos in a bubble so they can never get hurt by any bullies. I swear Collin tells me some of the antics at pre-school and I want to give some four year olds a piece of my mind.
My recent post Built Diaper Bag Review
Janine Huldie says
I have a feeling you probably did, because I think we were both from the local NYC area and bet our moms got them from the same chain of stores even. And I am with you on keeping them in a bubble and if I could I so would at this point!!
Linda Roy says
I loved watching Three's Company too. Joyce DeWitt was my favorite. And yes, school girls can be so mean to each other. It's horrible.
My recent post OctPoWriMo: Day 6 – I’ve Got a Lot of Nerves
Janine Huldie says
I admit, I loved Suzanne Somers, because the character of Chrissy just always cracked me up. And totally agree Linda, girls are so mean!
Kristi Campbell says
OMG While I'm glad you were vindicated after so many years, what a weird and crazy way for that to happen! Yikes! And I loved Three's Company. And our book is awesome. Congratulations! π
Janine Huldie says
It was truly a strange way to indeed be vindicated and couldn't agree more. Happy to know that you too were a Three's Company fan. And huge congrats to you again, too and so excited about our book!! π
Mary Belle says
I can't believe a nine year old would say that – not during your time – but it still isnt appropriate..
Btw, you look like an actress for a tv series on that photo! π
My recent post A Day Sans Sleep

Mary, that was the nicest compliment and seriously thank you for saying that. And I totally agree that it wasn't and still isn't right to this day. Still can't believe it, but my mom still has the letter in her drawer somewhere after all these years!
Lanaya says
Hahaha … I love when you get vindicated like that! It's the sweetest moments. AND YES that you brought out that picture in another post again! It's the highlight I tell you .. when you go back to your Year in Review post … that picture is SO #1!

You know I had to bring that photo out again. It was too good not to and I will so have to remember it when I wrap-up the year now!! π
Sandy Ramsey says
First, I loved Three's Company and still see rerun that are totally cheesy but…so am I! It's always tough when there's three, especially girls. It was when I was young and it is with my daughter now. I always get nervous when there's three because I'm always afraid one will feel left out or jealous. My rule of thumb, whenever possible, even out the number! And let me just say……love, love, love the photo!
Janine Huldie says
Sandy, I still love Three's Company, but you are right the odd number always makes for issues with girls. So much better when it is even, like two or four. And thank you for your kind words on the photo. I had to share it again, as I told Lanaya, I couldn't resist!! π
MelChi says
I love that photo, hehe and I also loved Three's Company. They were hilarious. Thanks for taking me back in time this afternoon. π
My recent post GMOs and the King, Prince, Pauper Weekly Meal Plan!
Janine Huldie says
My pleasure Melanie and seriously I had fun putting this photo up here again. Just love taking a walk back in time sometimes on here!! π
Kenya G. Johnson says
Yes we DO know how you mom felt now don't we? Goodness that was a mean little girl! Love that picture of you girl! LOL!! I did watch Three's Company back in the day. I also didn't "get" the what's so funny about this and that until later with reruns. Now television is soooo crystal clear.
Janine Huldie says
I know television nowadays leaves nothing to one's imagination. Seriously back then it was so much more covert now, it is all out there and nothing is left to the imagination. You are right also about totally knowing how our moms felt at this point in our lives!!
Nellie says
What a memory, I can't believe her uncle said that!! and WHO SAYS THINGS LIKE THAT AT NINE YEARS OLD?! Crazy!
My recent post Conversations On The Train
Janine Huldie says
I know it was totally crazy and her uncle confirming all the years later definitely was the icing on the cake for me!! π

Wow, I cannot believe a nine year old would write that! That picture is great, Janine! Made me smile.
My recent post The Mother of All Meltdowns
Janine Huldie says
So glad to have made you smile Rachel and I know I have to admit I do love that photo and remember it being taken back in the day, too!! π
lsdavidson says
I can't believe that a nine year old said that! Actually, I can't believe anyone, at any age would say that. I'm glad your Mom took matters into her own hands. I'm so glad the uncle helped you feel vindicated too! I loved Three's Company too!
Janine Huldie says
I know it was crazy, but she not only said it but wrote it down in a letter. My actually saved the letter and just reminded me when she read my blog post that she still indeed has it! π
cgacad says
that is so awful! at least you know it wasn't just you. she was just a mean girl. such a cute picture of you. i think she was jealous of your cuteness!
Janine Huldie says
Thank you so much Catherine and honestly I still sometimes can’t believe how mean she really was! Just so crazy!!
NuggetOnABudget says
Lol first of all, I die every time I see that photo of you as a kid and your fabulous mullet lol. So priceless! And I can attest to 3 being a crowd too, because when I was younger I used to play every weekend at my grandparents' house with my two cousins who were the same age as me. It was usually fine, but sometimes I got left out because they were both allowed to do more things than I was. Like play in the abandoned house next door or run around my grandparents farm. I always got upset, but now as I parent I can totally understand why my parents wouldn't let me do those things! And I hate to say it but I'm better off right now than either of them are ~ but of course I still love them π Thanks for sharing! xoxo
My recent post one little month.
Janine Huldie says
I am so glad you are a success story Kera and I know what we thought as unfair when we were younger, we now have a totally different perspective on as parents. Trust me, I know and couldn't agree with you more. My pleasure sharing and xoxo, too!! π
Heidi says
Girls can be so mean sometimes. Boys are more forward with their aggression, but some little girls can just be nasty. And I'm sure it was strange to hear your playmates father refer to her that way.
My recent post Mona Lisa Shares some Words of Wisdom
Janine Huldie says
I know girls are truly so mean and just hoping that my girls will get by will as little drama as possible, but know that this will probably not be the case!
